Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov

UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson still wants to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in some form of competition.

Coming off the first knockout loss of his glittering career, Ferguson returned to action after about a year against Michael Chandler at UFC 274. While many people doubted ‘El Cucuy‘ going into the bout, he looked phenomenal in the first round. Ferguson may have dropped four in a row but he’ll be going nowhere as he regroups for his comeback.

In an interview with Submission Radio following UFC 274, Tony Ferguson expressed his desire to compete against the undefeated Dagestani in some form of sports activity in the future.

“Maybe one day. You know what I would like to do? I’d love to coach against him on The Ultimate Fighter,” Ferguson said. “That’s what I would really love to do. Abso-f**king-lutly. And if we don’t fight, I would love to be able to compete on him with whatever. Wrestleball. Like, in basketball, soccer. You put your best team together, I got my team. Any kind of sport.

“You can pick it, Khabib. We’ll go out there and we’ll kick your ass out of due respect. Enjoy your retirement. And I like what he’s doing for the sport. He opened up his own promotion. Got props for him like that. And when he lost his pops, you know, respect for him for that. But yeah, at the end of the day, his dad said that he would love for us to compete.

“So, regardless if that’s MMA or any sport, chess, checkers, fucking cars, it doesn’t matter. I have enough respect or enough cool to not go over there and kick his ass, but enough to be able to shake the man’s hand and sit down at a game table and to play a game like that. That’s man shit.“

History of booking Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

Having been matched up against one another a total of five times, the bout between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov is one that’s cursed by the MMA gods. The pair were first scheduled to fight in 2015 for the finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 22. Nurmagomedov was going into the bout 22-0 with six UFC wins but hadn’t competed in over a year due to a knee injury. Khabib ended up pulling out of the bout due to a rib injury that caused a retirement scare.

For the second time around in 2016, Ferguson was forced to withdraw citing an injury after the headlining fight fell apart. In 2017, they were slated to take on each other for the third time with the interim lightweight title on the line. However, Khabib had to pull out after being hospitalized prior to the weigh-ins due to weight management issues.

In 2018, a fourth attempt was made to put together Ferguson-Nurmagomedov but to no avail. Ferguson needed surgery on his lateral collateral ligament and was forced to pull out.

The fifth and final shot at making the fight happen was at the end of 2019 when the UFC announced its plans to host them in April 2020. Unfortunately, the whole world was brought to a standstill and so was the dream of seeing them square off in the cage due to the pandemic.

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has confirmed that would he have dropped the opening round of his UFC 274 clash with Michael Chandler earlier this month, he would have called time on his professional mixed martial arts career.

Ferguson, a former interim titleholder at 155lbs, suffered his fourth consecutive loss earlier this month at UFC 274, dropping a brutal second round front kick knockout loss against fellow lightweight contender, Chandler, resulting in the first KO defeat of his lengthy professional run.

The Oxnard native had started the opening frame brightly, however, managing to momentarily drop Chandler with a left hand in the opening minute of the first round, as well as landing a series of notable follow up shots on the feet.

Giving up a double leg takedown at the fence midway through the first round, Ferguson would manage to contain Chandler in full guard for the remainder of the frame, however, slicing with elbows and strikes from the bottom to boot.

Landing his first round victory, Ferguson would, however, suffer a brutal second round front kick knockout loss to Chandler – who had snapped a run of two straight losses to common foes, Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira with his stoppage win.

Tony Ferguson confirms he would likely have called time on his career if he dropped the first round

Speaking on his first round performance against Chandler, Ferguson told Submission Radio during a recent interview that if he were to drop the first frame, he would likely have hung up his gloves.

“I talked to my Dad, I talked to my coaches, and I said if I knew that I didn’t have the gumption or the will to want to go anymore, if I didn’t do good in that first round, I would have called it quits,” Tony Ferguson said. “I would have said, ‘F*ck this, I’m out, I’m retiring, I’m going to go find something different, I’ll coach everybody to be at this high level and that’s it.”

“… So, here I am, I have a TKO on my record, I have a submission record, you know what I mean,” Tony Ferguson continued. “I’ve been put out, knocked out, I’ve lost by TKO, I’ve lost by decision. It’s a pain in the ass to be able to look at these losses, but like I said, if I didn;t have the will and the want to be able to do that and then know that when Dana (White) said I looked phenomenal in that first round, I looked really good, I would have just called it quits.”

Ferguson congratulated Chandler following his victory at UFC 274, and maintained that despite the crushing knockout loss, he was still hungry to compete – something he echoed during his recent interview.

“Right now, I’m f*cking hungry, man,” Tony Ferguson said. “I found myself back in the gym hitting the bag really light, not going too hard. This morning I didn’t wake up with a headache. I felt f*cking phenomenal this morning, I felt really good. I’ve been eating really well, I haven’t been treating my body like sh*t or my mental game like sh*t.”

“I’ve really been focusing on what I can control, and you know, shoutout to the world,” Tony Ferguson explained. “The only things that we can control is our heart rate and our breathing. The rest is up to the big guys upstairs.”

While former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson appreciates Charles Oliveira’s offer to train together, he feels he has to turn it down.

After suffering a fourth straight defeat to Michael Chandler at UFC 274, Ferguson is on the hunt for a new team. He has had his fair share of past issues with his former coaches and wants to find a team that is willing to take in a hungry veteran.

Following his most recent loss, Oliveira was one of a few fighters to reach out to Ferguson on social media with words of encouragement. Oliveira offered Ferguson to come train with him in preparation for his next fight.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Ferguson was asked whether or not Oliveira made the pitch for clout.

“No, I don’t think it’s social media clout. I have to really reflect on what he said because Chute Boxe is a very good school. But he is in my weight class. I’m one of the only fighters that he hasn’t finished,” Ferguson said. “I see myself competing against him again… I’m looking for local gyms that I’m not going to compete with.” (h/t Sportskeeda)

Oliveira and Ferguson battled at UFC 256, with Oliveira earning a unanimous decision victory. Oliveira has gone on a run ever since, winning the title over Chandler and earning wins over Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

Despite Oliveira’s generous invite, Ferguson remains fixated on getting back into the thick of things in the lightweight division. While these two lightweights share a lot of respect for each other, Ferguson feels training together could be a conflict of interest.

Tasked with snapping a four-fight losing skid in his return to the Octagon, former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson has flirted with a potential move to the welterweight ranks upon his return – winning The Ultimate Fighter 13 during a successful stint at 170lbs.

Tony Ferguson, who featured in a high-stakes UFC 274 main card clash with one-time vacant title challenger, Michael Chandler last weekend in Phoenix, Arizona – suffered a stunning second front kick knockout loss to the Missouri native – dropping the first KO loss of his lengthy mixed martial arts career.

The Oxnard native had taken the opening round on all three judges scorecards, dropping Chandler with a left hand during an exchange, as well as working actively off his back after he was taken down midway through the opening frame.

However, the devastating knockout loss came as Ferguson’s fourth consecutive defeat under the promotion’s banner, following prior one-sided losses against Beneil Dariush, former champion, Charles Oliveira, and fellow former interim titleholder, Justin Gaethje.

Tony Ferguson landed four knockout victories during his successful season on TUF

Entering the UFC off the back of a successful tenure on The Ultimate Fighter 13 back in 2011, Ferguson won the tournament with a finale knockout victory over Ramsey Nijem, before immediately moving to the lightweight limit in his promotional bow.

Weighing up both his fighting future off the back of his shocking knockout loss, Tony Ferguson welcomed the opportunity to fight at 170lbs again in his return, pointing to the fact that he found noteworthy success at welterweight in the past.

“I wouldn’t mind going back up to 170,” Tony Ferguson said during an interview with MMA Junkie reporter, Mike Bohn. “I knocked everybody out up there at 170. This cut to 155 – it’s not too hard, but I lose a lot of muscle mass, man. I f*cking hate being skinny like that, I look like a little b*tch, I don’t f*cking like that.”

“I work my ass off to put on muscle and make sure that I eat right, and I do that – and my pops always told me, ‘Anthony, wrestle at your own bodyweight.’ And I haven’t done that for a while. What I did for the last year and a half was, I just stopped everything and I just paid attention to everything other people were doing…”
As far as his fighting future is concerned, Ferguson remains confident of remaining under the banner of the promotion regardless of his current skid – recently penning a new, multi-fight deal. And when the time comes for his return to active competition, he expects the UFC to reach out.

“When I’m ready to fight I will let the UFC know, and I guarantee you they’ll let me know, too, ‘Hey, this is who we have.’” Tony Ferguson said. “I was ready for (Islam) Makhachev in Abu Dhabi if some things would’ve been a little bit different. But I try to take these opportunities and present them so I’m there for the company. They know I’m a company man, and that’s why they said I’m not going anywhere.”

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is on the hunt for a new coach following his most recent knockout loss.

Ferguson fell to Michael Chandler via second-round head kick knockout on the UFC 274 main card. After getting off to a good start in the opening round, he was caught with a front kick to the face from Chandler that knocked him out cold.

Ferguson has now lost four straight, with his recent struggles beginning with his interim title loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. His then-cornerman, world-renowned Jiu-Jitsu specialist Eddie Bravo, revealed that he didn’t feel he belonged in Ferguson’s corner for the fight.

Ferguson and Bravo would part ways following the Gaethje loss, but Ferguson would continue to deal with issues with his coaches. After suffering significant damage in his recent performances, he briefly trained with legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach.

But Ferguson’s partnership with Roach wouldn’t last long, and Ferguson is looking for a clean slate as he is looking to snap his losing skid.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Ferguson opened up on what he wants ahead of his next fight camp.

“If I’m playing a video game, I’m like, okay, these are all the things I’m supposed to collect. You got your side quests all done… but I still wanna play this one over again, so I’m kinda reinserting the disc, I’m kinda starting it over again,” Ferguson said. “I know what’s gonna happen inside that Octagon, I know I’m gonna win, but I gotta put in the effort.

UFC 274 loss wouldn't lead to Tony Ferguson being cut, says boss Dana White
Tony Ferguson

“You can’t see the end credits unless you put in that time in the beginning all the way through. Like in a role-playing game, you collect all these things for a long time, but you start the game over you get to start with nothing. That’s exactly what I’m fucking doing. I’m going back, I’m bare, I’m fucking naked… and I’m just hoping that someone sees the opportunity to coach someone who wants to be coached. That’s all I’m asking, that’s all I’m gonna do, too.”

At one point, Ferguson was regarded as arguably one of the best fighters in the sport, but he hasn’t been able to get over the hump and claim the lightweight throne.

Ferguson earned a shot in the UFC following a win over Ramsey Nijem on The Ultimate Fighter 13. He would go on a 12-fight winning streak but multiple attempts at a matchup with Khabib Nurmagomedov wouldn’t materialize.

At 38 years old, Ferguson seems to be on the physical downswing of his career in the Octagon. But, he’s looking for a team that is willing to pick up a hungry veteran to add to the gym culture.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson bashed the former two-division titleholder, Daniel Cormier, after UFC 274.

This past weekend, Charles Oliveira became the first champion in the UFC to lose his belt on the weighing scales. Coming in at 155.5 lbs, ‘do Bronx’ was half a pound over the championship limit. Oliveira was stripped of his gold the moment he set foot inside the octagon against Justin Gaethje.

After news of the lightweight title going vacant was announced, fellow fighters and fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the missed weight.

Along the many different takes were old videos of fighters struggling on the scales that resurfaced. A video of Daniel Cormier appearing to hold onto a towel in an attempt to make weight went viral again. Another video of Cormier’s former teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov struggling on the scales was also doing rounds.

Tony Ferguson took the opportunity to weigh in on Oliveira’s unfortunate weight miss. ‘El Cucuy‘ shared Cormier’s video from UFC 210 and stated that ‘DC’ should’ve been stripped of his belt.

He didn’t have to wait long to get a reply from the man himself as Cormier pleaded with Ferguson to retreat.

Tony Ferguson alleges Cocaine use

Following Cormier’s backhanded response, Ferguson decided to step things up a notch by going in on the newly inducted Hall of Famer. Taking to Twitter to turn the heat up on Cormier, Ferguson stated.

“Lay Off The Yay Buddy. Not A Good Look You Make Yourself Look Sad. I’m already back to work I don’t quit like you Enjoy your retirement with Fathead.”

The “Fathead” Tony is referring to is Cormier’s friend and AKA teammate Khabib. He was scheduled to fight the Dagestani fighter on four different occasions but the fight never materialized due to both pulling out twice each. Khabib has also had issues with making weight and was reported to have missed the limit after eating tiramisu.

Cormier seemed confused at the allegations and advised Ferguson to shift his aim to Michael Chandler, who became the first man to knock him out at UFC 274.

“Ok Tony now you’re reaching. Are you saying I do cocaine? I’m so confused right now. I don’t know why you’re after me. Get Michael Chandler he’s the one kicked your face not me.”
