Joe Rogan, Eddie Bravo

Joe Rogan was brought to tears when he recently spoke on his podcast about when his dear friend Eddie Bravo pulled off one of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu upsets of all time against Royler Gracie.

In the early 2000s, there were few names that were more notable in combat sports than the Gracie family. On Joe Rogan’s world-famous podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, he turned back the clock and got very emotional when recounting Bravo’s stunning victory.

The legendary Jiu-Jitsu match took place at the Abu Dhabi World Championships in 2003 in Gracie’s home country of Brazil, where Rogan was there to support his friend and at the time, rising Jiu-Jitsu player Eddie Bravo. Discussing the magnitude and context of this match, Rogan stated:

“He had this big match with Royler and they shut off all the other matches and put all the cameras on this one thing. (Eddie) was such an underdog… He wasn’t even a black belt yet; Eddie was a brown belt. Royler, who was Royce’s brother, was more successful even than Royce in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. He’s like one of the greatest Gracie’s of all time in terms of his accomplishments in winning world Jiu-Jitsu tournaments. He was the man.”

Joe Rogan On the Insane Submission

Eddie Bravo went on to submit Royler Gracie with a Triangle, and Rogan gives his detailed account of this spectacular moment:

“He (Royler) was in Eddie’s guard, and he just slapped that triangle on him, then started pulling the head and then Royler tapped. It was insane, I was crying. I’ll cry right now… It’s one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

It is clear by the effect that it had on him that Rogan was living vicariously through Eddie Bravo. Just speaking about his friend’s triumph, even 19 years later, brought Rogan to tears and stirred up a powerful emotional response.

Today, Eddie Bravo continues his dedication to his craft at his well-known school, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, which boasts a non-traditional system of teaching the sport. Even all these years later, Bravo’s victory over Royler Gracie goes down as legendary and was the catalyst for Eddie to start 10th Planet.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is on the hunt for a new coach following his most recent knockout loss.

Ferguson fell to Michael Chandler via second-round head kick knockout on the UFC 274 main card. After getting off to a good start in the opening round, he was caught with a front kick to the face from Chandler that knocked him out cold.

Ferguson has now lost four straight, with his recent struggles beginning with his interim title loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. His then-cornerman, world-renowned Jiu-Jitsu specialist Eddie Bravo, revealed that he didn’t feel he belonged in Ferguson’s corner for the fight.

Ferguson and Bravo would part ways following the Gaethje loss, but Ferguson would continue to deal with issues with his coaches. After suffering significant damage in his recent performances, he briefly trained with legendary boxing coach Freddie Roach.

But Ferguson’s partnership with Roach wouldn’t last long, and Ferguson is looking for a clean slate as he is looking to snap his losing skid.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Ferguson opened up on what he wants ahead of his next fight camp.

“If I’m playing a video game, I’m like, okay, these are all the things I’m supposed to collect. You got your side quests all done… but I still wanna play this one over again, so I’m kinda reinserting the disc, I’m kinda starting it over again,” Ferguson said. “I know what’s gonna happen inside that Octagon, I know I’m gonna win, but I gotta put in the effort.

UFC 274 loss wouldn't lead to Tony Ferguson being cut, says boss Dana White
Tony Ferguson

“You can’t see the end credits unless you put in that time in the beginning all the way through. Like in a role-playing game, you collect all these things for a long time, but you start the game over you get to start with nothing. That’s exactly what I’m fucking doing. I’m going back, I’m bare, I’m fucking naked… and I’m just hoping that someone sees the opportunity to coach someone who wants to be coached. That’s all I’m asking, that’s all I’m gonna do, too.”

At one point, Ferguson was regarded as arguably one of the best fighters in the sport, but he hasn’t been able to get over the hump and claim the lightweight throne.

Ferguson earned a shot in the UFC following a win over Ramsey Nijem on The Ultimate Fighter 13. He would go on a 12-fight winning streak but multiple attempts at a matchup with Khabib Nurmagomedov wouldn’t materialize.

At 38 years old, Ferguson seems to be on the physical downswing of his career in the Octagon. But, he’s looking for a team that is willing to pick up a hungry veteran to add to the gym culture.

Which coach do you want to see team up with Tony Ferguson?

Eddie Bravo, the jiu-jitsu coach of former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson says his fighter is already back in training despite suffering a brutal beatdown at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 last weekend.

Ferguson was originally set to fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed lightweight championship at UFC 249 on April 18. The undefeated Russian was forced off the card due to travel issues and was replaced by Gaethje. The fight was then postponed and instead took place on May 9 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

In the fight, Gaethje dominated from start to finish. ‘The Highlight’ landed countless power punches on ‘El Cucuy’ who displayed immense bravery and a great chin. Ultimately referee Herb Dean stepped in and waved off the fight in the fifth and final round, although many believe he or Ferguson’s corner should have stopped the fight sooner.

Since the fight, Ferguson appears to be in good spirits. He has been posting positive messages on social media and was even seen dancing as he recovered from his injuries in the hospital.

Speaking on a recent episode of Joe Rogan’s Fight Companion podcast Bravo of 10th Planet Jui-Jitsu revealed despite what UFC president Dana White and some others believe, Ferguson’s loss was nothing to do with back-to-back weight cuts, he said.

“I talked to Tony yesterday and he said it had nothing to do with the weight. The loss had nothing to do with his weight… Justin just fought an awesome fight man.”

Bravo went on to tell of his surprise at how well Ferguson is handling this loss. The lightweight contender is content and already back in training for his next fight.

“He’s already training, he was training today,” Bravo said, He’s ready to go back. It gave me chills listening to him last night. His champ shit only, that’s in his losses too. He’s like listen ‘everyone in the world is suffering financially and I got to go in there and make a whole bunch of money and my family is secure, so I lost technically but I won in life.’”

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub asked the renowned BJJ coach why he and the Ferguson corner didn’t throw in the towel, as it’s something he would have done in the later rounds.

“That crossed my mind but I never would have done it,” Bravo responded. “I have never been a head MMA coach ever in my life and never wanted to be, never wanted to be, and even to this day that’s not me.”

Are you excited to see Tony Ferguson fight again after hearing Eddie Bravo say he’s already back in training?

Coach: Tony Ferguson Has More Weapons Than Anyone In UFC History

The long-awaited fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is creeping ever closer. We are just eight weeks out from the lightweight title fight at UFC 249. Although history may tell us to not get too excited, I just can’t help it!

Especially after hearing Eddie Bravo, BJJ coach for ‘El Cucuy’ talking up his fighters chances whilst speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience – Fight Companion, he said.

“We’ve been
preparing for Khabib for a long time.  We’re always preparing for the worst-case
scenario, and Khabib is the worst-case scenario. He’s probably the best
ground-and-pounder wrestler ever. This is the toughest challenge ever in MMA
for 10th Planet.”

Despite
giving respect to the champion, Bravo believes that we have seen moments where
Nurmagomedov has been unable to impose his game as he would’ve liked.

“The thing
with Khabib, Khabib is undefeated – no doubt one of the best fighters of all
time,” Bravo said. “But you’ve got to remember this, too: There are a couple of
Khabib fights – we’ve watched all the Khabib fights – where you don’t
see the classic Khabib. Like Gleison Tibau – that didn’t go down like (people
expected). There are some fights Khabib (looks human).

“You can
also look at the (Rafael) dos Anjos fight – there are things he couldn’t do
that he could do with other people. He couldn’t get past dos Anjos’ guard. (He)
wasn’t that easy to take down.”

The 10th
Planet Jiu-Jitsu owner talked up Ferguson’s wrestling credentials and compared
them Conor McGregor’s who had some success against the lightweight king.  He also mentions the many tools possessed by
his fighter who can end the fight in a variety of ways.

“Tony wrestled his whole (expletive) life,” Bravo said. “There’s a light year difference between Conor’s wrestling and Tony’s wrestling, so you’ve got that. Tony will throw D’Arce (chokes) standing and from all different angles, and while you’re trying to take him down. So Khabib’s got to worry about that.

“Khabib has my respect a million percent – that guy’s insane. But Tony has so many (expletive) weapons. He might have more weapons than anyone in the history of the UFC.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
