Undefeated professional boxer, Callum Walsh, who plys his trade under the tutelage of Freddie Roach at Wildcard Boxing in California, has detailed some bizarre and unusual drills and training methods he has experienced whilst training alongside former interim UFC lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson.

Walsh, a native of Cork, who boasts an experienced amateur career, returns to the boxing ring atop a Hollywood Fight Nights card broadcast on UFC Fight Pass, and has trained extensively with the aforenoted, Tony Ferguson during the latter’s tenure with Wildcard Boxing.

The former interim UFC gold holder returned to the Octagon at UFC 274 on Saturday opposite Michael Chandler, dropping an early second round front kick knockout defeat in a devastating stoppage loss

The defeat spelt Tony Ferguson’s fourth on the trot, following prior one-sided losses against the trio of Beneil Dariush, Charles Oliveira, and Justin Gaethje

For Walsh, the 21-year-old, who began boxing as an amateur at age 11 en route to a slew of national titles and a European championship win, detailed how Ferguson would often call him up late at night and ask him to go on lengthy runs and training sessions.

“I trained with Tony (Ferguson) a lot,” Callum Walsh told assembled media at UFC 274. “Me and Tony run together, I wrestled with Tony, we’ve done a lot stuff together, me and Tony. It’s crazy, training with Tony, I never before in my life, and I actually wrestled with Tony the first time. Crazy, unbelievably crazy experience.”

“Me and Tony, when we go running, he brings all these drills into it, like American football drills, and this kind of stuff,” Callum Walsh said. “And any time I did go running with Tony, it was like the middle of the night. Tony shows up to my house at like 12 o’clock at night, and we just go running. It’s a lot of unusual training but it’s good, I like it, it’s fun. It makes things fun, and I enjoy it.”

Walsh explained how while he would be catching his breath after a lengthy session, Ferguson would often only be warming up – claiming that they would train for upwards of three hours into the small hours of the night.
“There was one night actually he (Tony Ferguson) texted me, I think it was like 11:30, 12 at night, he was just like, ‘Let’s go,” Callum Walsh said. “He just texted me, ‘Let’s go.’ I was like, ‘Alright, let’s go.” I think we trained for like three hours, three or four hours.” (Transcribed by Cageside Press)

Undefeated UFC welterweight Khamzat Chimaev has offered words of support to Tony Ferguson after the former interim lightweight champion suffered a hellacious knockout loss to Michael Chandler at UFC 274.

The main card of UFC 274 saw a number of exhilarating matchups, with fans arguably most excited for the 155lb clash between Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson, although Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje was held in similar, if not higher, regard.

Ferguson was hoping to return to his winning ways, after dropping three consecutive losses to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and Beneil Dariush. He started strong, sending Chandler tumbling to the canvas with a crisp combination of strikes. Round one ended, with Ferguson likely up on the scorecards.

However, seconds into round two, Ferguson was hit by a front kick reminiscent of Anderson Silva or Lyoto Machida. Ferguson crumpled to the ground, completely unconscious, whilst Chandler proceeded to begin flipping around the cage, quite literally.

As the dust now settles, there has been an ovation of support for Tony Ferguson from numerous members of note within the world of MMA. Even Khamzat Chimaev, who has garnered a reputation for being a ‘cold-blooded killer,’ publically reached out in support of Ferguson.

In a post to his Twitter account, ‘Borz’ stated the following:

“Keep your head up you are already a legend in this sport @TonyFergusonXT (Tony Ferguson).”

What is next for Khamzat Chimaev?

Khamzat Chimaev’s most recent octagon appearance was a three-round war with former title challenger Gilbert Burns. ‘Borz’ kept his undefeated status, in an extremely competitive bout. It is unclear who Chimaev will fight next, although it seems likely that there are two front runners, with Dana White stating that he is still one fight away from a title shot.

The most obvious pick is Colby Covington, the current No.1 contender at 170lbs. The only issue with this matchup, is that Covington is reportedly currently dealing with concussion symptoms following the assault by Jorge Masvidal. This may result in the fight taking too long to be made for Chimaev, who is known to compete as regularly as possible.

The UFC are also interested in booking a fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz. This matchup makes next to no logical sense, as Diaz is not ranked, nor is he riding an impressive win streak. However, the Stockton fighter is a massive name in the sport, and a win over him would do dividends to introduce Chimaev to wider audiences.

Who do you think Khamzat Chimaev should fight next?

Former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson has congratulated Michael Chandler on his shocking front kick knockout win over him at UFC 274 on Saturday night, maintaining that he was happy to be back in the Octagon and hungry to compete despite the devastating stoppage defeat.

Tony Ferguson, who made his first Octagon appearance in a year in his high-profile UFC 274 main card clash with Chandler, got off to a blistering start against his fellow veteran, scoring an opening round knockdown courtesy of a left hand.

Applying pressure and wobbling Chandler for the second time soon thereafter, Ferguson was taken down later in the first frame, as the former landed a series of heavy hands from the top, with Ferguson replying with his patented slicing elbows from the bottom.

Returning to his corner, himself, bloodied, albeit smiling, Ferguson would go on to suffer a shocking knockout loss just 17 seconds into the second round, with Chandler springing with a brutal front kick, knocking Oxnard favorite, Ferguson unconscious for the first time in his storied professional career.

Tony Ferguson returned a negative facial CT scan following his knockout loss to Michael Chandler

Requiring transportation to a medical facility following the brutal knockout loss, Ferguson managed to return a negative CT scan, and has since been discharged from a Phoenix hospital.

Issuing a congratulatory message to Chandler following the bout, Ferguson wished the Sanford MMA staple the best of luck in his next outing, as well as insisted he was still happy to return to active competition.

“Congratulations to @MikeChandlermMA on his victory at UFC 274,” Tony Ferguson tweeted. “Had lots of fun in there, you fans are f*ckin’ wild I love this sh*t! Feels good to be back & hungry again. We were just getting started. Best of luck in your next fight -champ #ForTheLoveOfTheGame -CSO- (American flag emoji) (trophy emoji) (Mexican flag emoji).”

The loss came as Ferguson’s fourth consecutively, after a prior May decision loss to Beneil Dariush, a December 2020 judging defeat to former champion, Charles Oliveira, and an April 2020 fifth round stoppage defeat against fellow former interim titleholder, Justin Gaethje.

UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson has released his first statement since being knocked out by Michael Chandler at this past weekend’s UFC 274 pay-per-view.

On Saturday night, Ferguson enter Phoenix’s Footprint Center hoping to snap his three-fight losing skid and rebound into contention. In his way of doing so was former Bellator champion Chandler, who had similar goals on fight night.

In the opening round, it looked like fans of “El Cucuy” were going to be left pleased. The former interim titleholder dropped “Iron” early on, but was unable to capitalize. As it turned out, that was to be Ferguson’s one and only opening.

17 seconds into the second frame, the #7-ranked lightweight was left unconscious and face down on the canvas courtesy of one of the most brutal KOs in UFC history. With an Anderson Silva-esque front kick, Chandler recorded his second Octagon victory and moved closer to another crack at holding gold on MMA’s biggest stage.

Thankfully, Ferguson suffered no significant damage and was released from hospital following a negative CT scan. He’s now reflected on the fight and commented on the loss in a post on Twitter.

Gracious in defeat, “El Cucuy” congratulated Chandler and wished him luck in his next outing.

“Congratulations to @MikeChandlerMMA On his victory at UFC 274. Had lots of fun in there, you fans are Fuckin’ wild I love this shit! Feels good to be back & hungry again. We were just getting started. Best Of Luck In Your Next Fight- Champ # ForTheLoveOfTheGame -CSO-“

While Chandler used his time on the mic post-fight to stake his claim for a title shot and call out former two-division champion Conor McGregor, the future is more uncertain for Ferguson.

With consecutive defeats to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, and Chandler, the 38-year-old is a sizable step behind the elites at 155 pounds, and the manner of his latest setback has led many to ponder a potential retirement for the UFC legend.

What should be next for Tony Ferguson?

Conor McGregor had plenty to say about Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson following their losses at UFC 274.

Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson are among two of Conor McGregor’s biggest critics in the UFC’s lightweight division. Ferguson coined the quirky and unflattering nickname of “McNuggets” in reference to McGregor and has been using it for several years now.

Gaethje has had some of the harshest things to say about McGregor than anyone else has in the sport. Gaethje even once said that the Irishman was a ‘shit father and husband.’

Heading into the UFC 274 pay-per-view, Gaethje also said that he wanted the opportunity to remove McGregor from the sport of MMA forever.

With all this in mind, after Ferguson was knocked out by Michael Chandler and Gaethje submitted by Charles Oliveira, McGregor had plenty to say.

After deleting tweets posted last night mocking Tony Ferguson for his loss, McGregor also dropped the following photos, which made light of Ferguson’s constant “nuggets” references.

Image

Here is what McGregor said in the since-deleted tweets from last night:

Tony had some great nuggets in the media build up. Then he got punt kicked to the chin and got turned into a nugget himself. That’s crazy.

If you pulled that out of a McDonald’s bag you’d dip it in sauce and eat without a moments thought. No doubt. That would pass as a legit @McDonalds chicken nugget.
That’s Crazy!”

He also would unleash on the loser of the UFC 274 main event, Justin Gaethje:

“Gaethje is a jackass. The amount of absolute dribble he speaks as well. Over and over. A Grade A jackass! A bird brain with a bird brain manager. Two bum twats they are. He is. A Jackass. Stevo Ocrack head in recovery should see can Johnny give him a part.”

Conor McGregor is expected to make his return to competition later this year. His most recent targeted opponent is UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman.

Both Gaethje and Ferguson have expressed interest in wanting to fight McGregor for years, but those bouts never came to fruition.

What are your thoughts on McGregor’s mockery of Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson?

Watch | Tony Ferguson And Chuck Liddell Embrace After Vicious UFC 274 Front Kick KO Loss

Tony Ferguson Chuck Liddell UFC 274 Front Kick Knockout Michael Chandler

After one of the most viral knockouts in sports history occurred at UFC 274, fight fans were met with a humbling scene. After recovering from unconsciousness, Tony Ferguson exited the cage and was embraced by the legend Chuck Liddell: a man who has been on the wrong side of many gruesome knockouts himself.

The battle between Ferguson and Michael Chandler was extremely competitive in the first round, so much so that the intensity was rising, and tension was at an all-time maximum worldwide. Ferguson’s combos were straight and true, and he had massive success utilizing his reach earlier on the shorter man that is ‘Iron Mike’.

Chandler hung tough, however, displaying his chin. He ate ‘El Cucuy‘s’ best shots and was serving meteors of his own, swinging for the fences in the truest form of the phrase. Things hit the ground, and Chandler finished up with some beautiful ground-and-pound. However, ‘El Cucuy’ threatened submissions from the bottom and landed some clinical elbows. It was a very even round with Ferguson getting the better on the feet and Chandler arguably doing the better work on the ground.

Things would change, however, early into the next round. ‘Iron Mike’ would secure the greatest knockout in his entire career and cement his highlight reel as potentially one of the greatest in MMA. And Ferguson? Well, the entire MMA community was devastated for him.

Heart Break and Devastation: Tony Ferguson and Chuck Liddell Embrace After Gruesome Front Kick KO at UFC 274

A beloved figure in MMA, you would be hard-pressed to single out another fighter that fans love any more than Tony Ferguson. The authenticity, the throwing of imaginary sand during fights, the cryptic tweets – the man is just one of a kind.

So, you could understand that while everybody was happy for Chandler and impressed (to say the least) by the knockout, the general feeling was that of sadness. However, to ease the hearts of MMA fans, an icon was there to give Ferguson a simple embrace, and say some words that have not yet been disclosed publically.

How the Wheel Turns: Chuck Liddell Embracing Tony Ferguson Is Both Ironic and Iconic

Fans of old-school MMA will be well aware of Chuck Liddell. ‘The Iceman’ was a brutal fighter, who devastated his opponents with rapid-fire strikes that erased consciousness and etched his very name into the stones of greatness.

Until the day things changed. No longer was Chuck Liddell the impervious monster of fiction and lore. He was human. And he was being knocked out by almost everybody. So, the infamy died down, and people realized he was no god, but a mortal man with consciousness like the rest of humanity.

In a bizarre twist of fate, Tony Ferguson appears to have followed a near-identical path. He was unstoppable, the ‘boogeyman of the division.’ Until now. It started with the epic loss to Justin Gaethje during the covid pandemic, and it resumes with this dramatically shocking knockout he sustained in the Chandler fight at UFC 274. Tony Ferguson is mortal, and he is human. ‘El Cucuy’ is a boogeyman no longer.

That’s why it’s fitting that none other than Chuck Liddell was there to embrace Tony Ferguson after such a terrible defeat. MMA fans will never lose their love for either fighter, but it has become a sad reality that neither man will reach the heights they once stood at.

What are your thoughts regarding this heart-warming embrace between two legends in Liddell and Ferguson?
