UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson took a shot at title challenger Michael Chandler at the UFC 262 pre-fight press conference, saying that the former Bellator world champion dodged him and didn’t earn his shot at the UFC lightweight belt.

It all started when Chandler was asked about his road to the belt and the UFC, and how he feels that everything worked out perfectly to this point in his career. Ferguson interrupted and accused Chandler of not wanting a fight with him.

“You fucking dodged me Chandler, you’re a bitch,” Ferguson said. “You said no and got this shit handed to you, you got Dana White privilege.”

Chandler won his UFC debut in spectacular fashion at UFC 257 with a first-round knockout over Dan Hooker. Ferguson has lost back-to-back fights including the interim lightweight title bout against Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.

Charles Oliveira earned a fight with Chandler for the UFC lightweight title after dominating Ferguson at UFC 256, showcasing his superior grappling skills and creativity on the feet.

Chandler signed with the UFC following a highly-decorated run in Bellator, including earning the lightweight belt in the promotion twice. This includes wins over former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, and top contenders Patricky Pitbull and Goiti Yamauchi.

Ferguson will battle Beneil Dariush at UFC 262 in the co-main event of the card. Dariush has been on a roll over the past year with six straight victories.

Depending on how both the co-main and main events go on Saturday at UFC 262, a potential matchup between Chandler and Ferguson could be extremely intriguing. Both fighters are known for their toughness in the octagon and could produce fireworks in a title fight.

Tony Ferguson believes he’s edging closer to a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov despite the fact ‘The Eagle’ retired from MMA in 2020.

‘El Cucuy’ is currently riding a two-fight losing streak. He lost to Justin Gaethje by fifth round TKO at UFC 249 before falling to a decision defeat against Charles Oliveira at UFC 256.

At UFC 262, Ferguson will look to get back to winning ways when he takes on Beneil Dariush who is under the same management company as Nurmagomedov – Dominance MMA.

The former interim lightweight champion believes every fighter he beats from Dominance MMA brings him one step closer to the illusive fight with Nurmagomedov.

“I’m getting closer to Khabib and that’s the only fight that his pops wanted for him and that’s the only fight that they agreed to,” Ferguson explained to ESPN. “So like I said before on that one. If he needs to be retired and go get PED’s and come back stronger, I’m just kidding with that, you know. But he’s gotta watch out man, they’re going to try to get as much film on me as they can, but I don’t know what all the film you need, I gave you two of the best ones.”

‘El Cucuy’ believes Nurmagomedov’s retirement is temporary.

“Well, I have a pretty good idea when people are calling their bluffs right,” Ferguson said. “Remember when I called his bluff on UFC 209. Same thing dude, I know Khabib and that’s the only reason I could look in that guy’s soul, so it’s different. So regardless of this chess, checkers or whatever it is or even a friendly game of video game, I’m sure we’ll play one time because the fans want to see something like that. Tony Ferguson hasn’t given up on a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ferguson will look to return to the win column when he takes on Beneil Dariush at the UFC 262 pay-per-view event taking place May 15 in Houston, Texas.

While Dariush is a tough opponent who Ferguson is fully focused on, he still believes a fight with Nurmagomedov will happen in the future.

When asked how the Dariush fight came about, “El Cucuy” speculated it had something to do with Dominance MMA — who represent both Dariush and Nurmagomedov — and went on to call out the latter.

“I’m getting closer to Khabib and that’s the only fight that his pops wanted for him and that’s the only fight that they agreed to still,” Ferguson told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “… But he’s gonna watch, man. They’re gonna try to get as much film on me as they possibly can…

“Quit being a b*tch, quit running, f*cking sign on the dotted line, Khabib. It’s the same sh*t. They keep giving me all these guys from Dominance MMA to kind of like toy with me.”

Of course, the duo were slated to fight each other five times only for it to get called off on all five occasions. The last time it was booked was for their lightweight title clash at UFC 249 last year only for the pandemic to all but end it for good.

With Khabib Nurmagomedov now retired, it looks like we’ll never get the dream fight we wanted. But crazier things have happened in this sport.
