Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has provided his fans with an update about the arm which appeared to be seriously injured during his lopsided defeat against Charles Oliveira at UFC 256. For those of you with short memories, Ferguson was caught in an armbar in the first round of his co-main event bout by BJJ specialist Oliveira. The arm was fully extended, and the Brazilian was cranking but Ferguson refused to tap. He ultimately survived the round and completed the 15-minute fight but was soundly beaten adding to a poor 2020 for ‘El Cucuy’ who also lost to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249 earlier in the year.
Things are already looking up for Ferguson in the new year. The fan favorite took to social media to reveal his arm had been given the all clear by doctors, something he was extremely happy about based on the video he posted alongside the information.

Michael Chandler explains why his fight with Tony Ferguson fight fell through, blaming the fact he wasn’t given enough time to prepare.
Former Bellator lightweight champion, Michael Chandler, sheds light on why his fight with Tony Ferguson fell through.
Chandler and Ferguson were due to face off at UFC 254 on 24th October 2020. However, negotiations went stale and Chandler was then made the backup fighter for the Justin Gaethje vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov title fight. Both fighters made it to the Octagon, meaning Chandler was left twiddling his thumbs. Fear not, as Chandler has finally been handed a UFC debut when he squares off against Dan Hooker at UFC 257. Still, why did his fight with Ferguson not make it to reality? (H/T BJPenn.com)
“The Tony Ferguson situation was definitely mismanaged. We had the opportunity for him and I to step in the cage in January, inside the Octagon, on this card, Tony says no,” Chandler said to ESPN. “Then, he takes a relatively short notice fight against Oliveira after calling me out. I say no, I needed three weeks, four weeks off after this last nine-month-long training camp I did. My opinion of him hasn’t changed, it is just unfortunate. It’s unfortunate that I’m not fighting Tony Ferguson right now, but I went through that through a day or so. Then, it was four other names and Hooker being one of them.”
Before Michael Chandler made the move to the UFC, he was on a two-fight winning streak. Two first-round KOs of Sidney Outlaw and Benson Henderson must have certainly whet Dana White and the UFC brass’s appetite. Before these finishes, Chandler lost his lightweight title after being TKO’d by Patricio Freire. Perhaps he will make his return to glory in the UFC’s lightweight division. Firstly, Chandler will have to get past Hooker if his plans of becoming champion are to be realised.
Where do you rank Michael Chandler in the UFC’s tough lightweight division? Do you think Michael Chandler will be a UFC champion?

Last year was one to forget for ‘El Cucuy’ who entered 2020 with hopes of facing Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title.
Unfortunately, that fight wasn’t to be. Nurmagomedov was forced out of the bout due to travel issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Ferguson instead squared off against Justin Gaethje in the UFC 249 main event. ‘The Highlight’ was dominant from start to finish, beating Ferguson to the punch over five rounds before referee Herb Dean mercifully waved off the fight in the final stanza. The loss snapped Ferguson’s 12-fight winning streak which is the longest in UFC lightweight history.
A few months on and ‘El Cucuy’ was booked to face another tough lightweight opponent in Charles Oliveira. The Brazilian was riding a seven-fight win streak into the UFC 256 match-up but had not beaten anyone close to the caliber of Ferguson. On the night Oliveira was able to dictate the fight over three, five-minute rounds. In round one he almost snapped Ferguson’s arm with one of his signature submissions. Ferguson survived the full 15 minutes but was unanimously beaten in the eyes of the fans and the three judges scoring the fight.
Despite looking past his best in 2020 Ferguson remains optimistic about his fighting future and made that clear on Instagram.
“Noise Pollution” Cleared The Board Focused On My Next Well Alright, Put On Ma’Muddy Work Boots & Made 2020 My Bitch,” Ferguson wrote. “Here’s To Better Business Decisions & Moar Effort In Taking New Chances There Were Some That Bailed & Some That Stayed, And For That I Am Thankful. Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping believes Tony Ferguson isn’t the same fighter anymore.
Ferguson suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Charles Oliveira at UFC 256 earlier this month after getting dominated over three rounds. That made it two losses in a row for the former interim champion who suffered his first setback since 2012 earlier this year following a fifth-round TKO defeat to Justin Gaethje.
While it could be a case of Ferguson simply losing to two of the best lightweights in the world, many observers believe he is showing signs of decline.
Bisping seemingly agrees.
“…He didn’t look the same,” Bisping said on his podcast (via MMA News). “He didn’t have any good moments. And I just feel because of the amount of damage over the years, now we’re starting to see a decline in what he can do in the Octagon.”
Ferguson certainly took a lot of damage in the Gaethje fight and even acknowledged it later on. That said, Bisping doesn’t expect him to just stop fighting because of all the cumulative damage he has absorbed over the years.
Instead, he believes Ferguson needs someone to step in and advise him against competing further.
“If we know Tony Ferguson, he’s not the type of guy to sit around and say, ‘Oh, no, no, no, I’m done. I’ve taken too much damage.’ No, he’s gonna say the opposite,” Bisping added. “He’s gonna say, ‘No, I’m fine. I got beaten. Maybe there was some mistakes in camp’ or whatever. Tony’s not going to accept that he’s on the decline.
“That’s what fighters do. Fighters never accept that. Fighters need somebody else, a third party to step in: a manager, a loved one, a wife, a coach, a friend, president of the UFC…who knows, we’ve seen that happen many times…to step in and say, ‘Tony, Tony, Tony, you’ve taken a lot of damage these days.’”
It’s certainly a bit harsh to assume Ferguson is completely finished at the highest level. After all, he deserves credit for not being stopped by Oliveira despite fighting the majority of the fight with his left arm compromised.
However, should Ferguson lose again and take considerable damage doing so, it might be time to consider hanging up the gloves.
