Conor McGregor is excited to see long-time lightweight contender Tony Ferguson is set to fight before 2020 is over.

Earlier this week it was announced Ferguson would make his eagerly anticipated comeback against Charles Oliveira on December 12 at UFC 256. McGregor took to social media to revel in the “excellent news”, he wrote.

“Excellent news regarding the booking of @TonyFergusonXT and @CharlesDoBronxs for the UFC’s upcoming 12/12 fight card. Stack them up, LET’S GO! #Buzzing #Raring #Slaughterhouse”

Ferguson hasn’t been seen in action since suffering a beatdown at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. ‘El Cucuy’ was out-punched for five rounds before referee Herb Dean stepped in and mercifully waved off the fight which was set to decide who was next in line for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Oliveira is streaking right now. The talented BJJ player has really found his groove on the feet, allowing him to put together a seven-fight win streak – the current best at 155lbs. Oliveira is coming off a submission victory over former interim title challenger Kevin Lee. He was previously booked to face Beneil Dariush before that fight fell apart.

McGregor hasn’t fought since wiping out Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone inside one minute at UFC 246 in January. ‘Notorious’ is currently booked to face Dustin Poirier in a highly anticipated rematch which will take place on January 23 at UFC 257.

Dana White Explains Why Michael Chandler Didn’t Fight Tony Ferguson

The recent weight cut was the reason why Michael Chandler didn’t end up fighting Tony Ferguson.

Chandler had been campaigning to fight Ferguson for weeks with the latter finally being receptive to the idea as he called for a December 12 showdown at the UFC 256 pay-per-view event.

However, Chandler wanted to fight at the UFC 257 card on January 23 which didn’t work out for Ferguson who was promptly booked to face surging contender Charles Oliveira at UFC 256 instead.

While that is a great fight in itself — arguably even better — many were wondering what led to Chandler not getting the fight despite previously calling for it. According to UFC president Dana White, it was the fact that he cut weight last month as an alternate for the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje title fight.

“He just cut weight. He had just cut the weight in Abu Dhabi so he couldn’t do it,” White said at the UFC 255 post-fight press conference. “So you know how we do it, how we roll — we make fights and these fights will happen and we’ll see what’s next for Chandler.”

With Conor McGregor set to face Dustin Poirier, that leaves Justin Gaethje and Dan Hooker as the only options as opponents for Chandler.

White agrees but for now, nothing is set.

“I don’t know. I mean, yeah, obviously those are the two guys that are left but I don’t know,” White added. “We’ll see how it all plays out.”

Who do you think Chandler should face for his UFC debut?

Tony Ferguson (@TonyFergusonXT) will face Charles Oliveira (@CharlesDoBronxs) at UFC 256 on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas, per Dana White (@danawhite). Ferguson gets his wish to fight again before the end of 2020. Huge addition to that Dec. 12 event.

Ferguson took to Twitter himself to seemingly confirm the fight news, he wrote.

We don’t wait, we call the shots. Line them up. Chief Security Officer of the UFC. See you Dec 12 Crew. Champ Shit Only. #DarceKnightRises @ufc @danawhite”

Earlier this week the chances of ‘El Cucuy’ competing again in 2020 looked slim. A long talked about fight with Michael Chandler was seemingly off the table and veteran reporter Ariel Helwani expressed doubts about the lightweight contender being added to UFC 256 against somebody else.

“Here’s Tony Ferguson begging to be added [to UFC 256] and I don’t think he’s going to be added,” Helwani said on DC & Helwani. “… He’s getting no response and I’m told he’s hitting a brick wall.”

Ferguson hasn’t been seen in action since suffering a beatdown at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. ‘El Cucuy’ was out-punched for five rounds before referee Herb Dean stepped in and mercifully waved off the fight which was set to decided who was next in line for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has informed MMA fans that Michael Chandler has accepted another fight. Heavily impacting the chances of a December showdown between the two top lightweight challenges.

With multiple callouts coming from the former Bellator champion challenging “El Cucuy”, to welcome Chandler to the UFC. It was hopeful that we would see the pair eventually fight. With Tony Ferguson agreeing to take on the UFC newcomer at UFC 256 on Dec. 12. A card that had been hit heavily with injuries. With double champ, Amanda Nunes forced to withdraw from her Featherweight title defense against challenger Megan Anderson.

Hopes of a blockbuster fight between Ferguson and Chandler began to grow. However, Tony Ferguson took to Twitter to announce that the UFC had informed him that Michael Chandler had accepted to fight somebody else.

For the past few months it has been clear how much Chandler wanted Ferguson to be his welcome fight to the UFC. A fight that if victorious would throw his name straight in to title fight talks. However, with Tony Ferguson clearly not waiting around to fight the former Bellator champion. We may have to hope that the pair cross paths in the near future. Since it is clear that the animosity between the two lightweight challenges is continuing to grow.

While talking to ESPN, Chandler came forward honestly saying that 3 and a half weeks is not enough time to prepare for a fight against Tony Ferguson. But, the former Bellator star has shown interest in being the co-main event for the much anticipated UFC 257 on Jan. 23. A card that sees the return of Conor McGregor. Chandler is willing to fight Ferguson in January 2021 as this will give the UFC newcomer enough time to prepare for the 3rd ranked lightweight challenger. But, will Tony Ferguson accept?
