Last Saturday’s (September 10, 2016) UFC 203 from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland featured some incredibly strange circumstances for a UFC pay-per-view (PPV) card.

But we’re not talking about CM Punk’s laughably one-sided MMA debut where he lost to a fighter with a 2-0 pro record, or even the broken elevator that hurt CB Dollaway bad enough to make him pull out of his fight.

No, the strangest thing probably came in the moments just after former champion Fabricio Werdum’s decision win over Travis Browne in the co-main event, when ‘Hapa’s’ coach Edmond Tarverdyan was hilariously front-kicked by Werdum in the Octagon. The strange scene followed a bout where Browne was shockingly allowed to call a “timeout” in the fight after he injured his finger, an injury that clearly affected in the fight’s remainder and may have played into his subpar performance.

While it’s safe to say ‘Hapa’ hasn’t exactly looked like himself since making the switch to Tarverdyan’s Glendale Fighting Club following his first loss to Werdum in April 2014, based on the photos of Browne’s finger from @ThePeoplesMMA on Twitter, it’s might be understandable why he wasn’t able to do much.

Check them out, and be warned that they are definitely not for the squeamish:

UFC 203 And The Crazy Antics Of The Heavyweight Division

So UFC 203 was pretty crazy. No, not the Mickey Gall domination of CM Punk, that played out pretty much how many had predicted. No, what was crazy was all the chaos in the final two fights of the night. For my money the heavyweight division is perhaps the least interesting weight class in combat sports. Sure, the big guys can produce some pretty devastating knock outs and moments straight out of a Rocky movie, but it’s usually at the expense of clean technique. With that said, the final two fights of the night produced the most fireworks on the main card.

UFC 203 = Pure Chaos

So UFC 203 was pretty crazy. No, not the Mickey Gall domination of CM Punk, that played out pretty much how many had predicted. No, what was crazy was all the chaos in the final two fights of the night. For my money the heavyweight division is perhaps the least interesting weight class in combat sports. Sure, the big guys can produce some pretty devastating knock outs and moments straight out of a Rocky movie, but it’s usually at the expense of clean technique. With that said, the final two fights of the night produced the most fireworks on the main card.

Fabricio Werdum went full Mortal Kombat as he flew across the cage to land a flying side kick to Travis Browne’s jaw. It was unexpected, it was dynamic, and it was only the beginning of the madness that occurred when these two rivals were sharing the cage this past Saturday. The next strangest came about due to Browne taking an impromptu time out in the middle of a fight. Granted he broke his finger, but there’s a time and place for licking your wounds and it certainly isn’t during a match.

Once the bout was decided and Fabricio Werdum was about to be declared the victor, another point of interest arouse as Edmond Tarverdyan began a verbal assault on the former heavyweight champion. Werdum was having none of it how ever and answered back with a push kick that sent both fighter’s camps into a bit of a frenzy.

Things were contained rather quickly before things played out the same as they did when Jason “Mayhem” Miller was beat down by the 209 crew back in the good old days of Strikeforce. When things were all said and done, Werdum was not only announced the winner of the match, but was able to create enough controversy and interest that could easily see him in a title match against Stipe Miocic in the very near future.

Speaking of the UFC heavyweight champion, the main event saw Miocic successfully defend his belt against Alistair Overeem in a slobberknocker of a throwdown. The two men traded concussive blows until Overeem’s notoriously suspect chin gave out on him and Miocic was the last man standing. It was a pretty exciting fight while it lasted and proved that there’s a reason why heavyweight fights are treated with such respect and awe. Heavyweight may not be my favorite division, but with guys like Stipe Miocic, Alistair Overeem, and Fabricio Werdum around, you can bet that interest is sure to be long lasting for years to come.

What did you think of UFC 203 and it’s odd and exciting heavyweight clashes?

Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne: One of the Grossest, Weirdest MMA Fights Ever

After a good night’s rest (but not really), it’s hard not to look back on UFC 203 with a raised eyebrow. There was no question that it was a solid event. Jimmie Rivera and Jessica Andrade established themselves as must-watch fighters, Yancy Medeiros picked up a great win and Nik Lentz gained some momentum at 155 pounds. There was a lot of strange stuff on this card.

But there was nothing stranger than the co-main event bout between Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne.

It was clear right from the get-go that this wasn’t going to be a normal fight. Werdum, whose base is Brazilian jiu-jitsu, began the fight with a flying side kick and would later follow it up with a forward flip kick.

Eventually, things would calm down a bit…until a wild right hand from Werdum ended up breaking Browne’s finger. That led to a weird sequence where Browne called for a timeout in order to reset his finger (which should have resulted in an immediate TKO loss, as was detailed during the broadcast). What fans didn’t see at the time was just how bad the break was, and they’re probably better off for it (Warning: NSFW image):

From there, the fight was a pretty standard affair. Well…pretty standard. Werdum dusted off one of his older, odder tools for this fight: the “lie down and hope the opponent jumps into his guard” technique.

Werdum has a huge advantage on the ground over almost any opponent but lacks the wrestling skills to reliably take things to the mat. One of his ways to compensate for that is trying to bait opponents onto the ground by lying on his back. If it works, it lets Werdum show off his amazing BJJ skills. If not…well, this happens:

Despite the fact that Werdum intentionally spent a good portion of the fight on his back, Browne still struggled to muster up any offense. To his credit, he still found the opportunity to land his go-to eye poke (Warning: NSFW image):

Eventually, the final horn sounded with a fairly clear winner. The action didn’t stop there, however, as Werdum had words with Browne’s coach, Edmond Tarverdyan, and surprised many by actually popping him with a light front kick:

Both corners would be shooed out of the cage and Werdum was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

The fight ended with a chorus of boos due to the lulls in action, but there are plenty of great fights that nobody remembers a month later. This one, though, will live on.

The kicks didn’t stop flying after the final horn blew for the conclusion of the heavyweight clash between former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne.

Shortly before Werdum’s hand was risen up to declare him the winner via unanimous decision, after going 15-minutes in the Octagon with Browne, Werdum and Browne’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan engaged in a little scrap of their own.

Werdum and Tarverdyan seemed to have exchanged words, angering ‘Vai Cavalo’ enough to throw a front body kick to the Glendale Fighting Club’s head-coach.

When asked on exactly what happened during the altercation during the UFC 202 post-fight press conference, Werdum stated that he was simply trying to keep distance between himself and Tarverdyan:

“This coach coming, I don’t know his name, he said ‘Hey, shut up your mouth son of a bi**h’.’ I say ‘What?’ Ah he said ‘Mutha fu**a’. He said ‘shut up your mouth mutha fu**a’. I said ‘What?’ And then I don’t know.”

“I just keep the distance. I don’t got to kick him, I know he is a boxing coach. I see in his eyes he want to punch my face. And I just keep the distance that’s it. But he come first, he says a lot of things, bad things you know? And my mom say ‘never say bad things for nobody’ and I say ‘okay’ but he start.”

In our co-main event of UFC 203 in Cleveland, former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne went to war in a pivotal contest of the UFC’s big boy division.

Werdum opened up the first round with a beautiful flying side kick that landed flush on Browne’s chin, then proceeded to pick his opponent apart and finish the round dropping some nasty ground-and pound from the back of ‘Happa’.

The next two rounds did not sit well with the Cleveland crowd, as the two men played the bout very tentatively, however, Werdum certainly was the better of the two men that night.

Werdum would take home a unanimous decision win when it was all said and done, but the strikes didn’t stop flying there, as an all-out war broke loose between the two camps after Edmond Tarverdyan said some things that caused Werdum to hit him with a front body kick.
