Fight Night 81 Highlights/Results: Cruz Tops Dillashaw in Close Decision, Alvarez Outworks Pettis, + More

(via UFC on FOX)

“Ring rust does not exist.”

It was a mantra that Dominick Cruz had been repeating for years…literally, years. In the two years he had spent battling injuries since his last fight and the four years he spent doing the same before his *other* last fight, Cruz has kindly been reminding us that 1) Ring rust is a lie 2) He never really lost his belt and 3) The members of Team Alpha Male were a bunch of meathead jocks that couldn’t ‘andle his riddum’. But until last night, the former WEC and UFC bantamweight champion was all talk.

“You can’t hit what you can’t catch,” was another trademarked slogan that Cruz made sure to repeat ad nauseum in the trash talk-filled lead up to his bantamweight title fight with TJ Dillashaw at Fight Night 81, and without comparing him to the one true MMA psychic, Mystic Mac, it’s safe to say that “The Dominator” might have a magical crystal ball of his own.

In a thrilling, hyper-paced five round fight, Cruz made Dillashaw miss, miss, and miss again, utilizing his classical, ferocious footwork to stay two steps ahead of the champion while countering brilliantly throughout the fight. In total, Dillashaw landed just 109 of the 408 strikes he threw last night while absorbing 112 of Cruz’s 302 attempts. It was a razor-close fight if you were to go purely by the numbers, but “The Dominator” was clearly the better man when all was said and done, and the judges (or at least, two of them) seemed to agree.

To Dillashaw’s credit, he was able to land far more strikes on the returning Cruz than any fighter before him ever had, and arguably took both of the championship rounds, but it just wasn’t enough. The former champion may have risen up the ranks by emanating Cruz’s style, but he was simply left flat-footed and swinging at air when forced to deal with the real McCoy. We’re sure that a rematch will be on the horizon for these two, but for now, that loss is going to be a tough one for Dillashaw to eat.

In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis faced off against former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and looked like a shell of his former self, to put it mildly. Utilizing the blueprint Rafael Dos Anjos used to dethrone Pettis, Alvarez opted to, for lack of a better term, “grapplefuck” Pettis into a state of tranquility over the course of three rounds. Even in the brief moments that the fight was being contested at range, Pettis just seemed unable or unwilling to let his hands go, resulting in an undoubtedly disappointing, yet dominant win for Alvarez (that was of course rendered a split decision).

While the judging on display at Fight Night 81 was its usual mix of indecisiveness and incompetence, the refereeing was, for the most part, on point. That was, of course, until the featured heavyweight bout between Matt Mitrione and Travis Browne. On two separate occasions, Browne’s fingers managed to find their way into Mitrione’s eyes without so much as a warning from referee Gary Forman, with the second instance not even resulting in a pause in the action until Mitrione complained that he was “seeing double.”

Of course, there was also the issue of the clearly separated shoulder that Mitrione suffered in the fight to no avail, but that’s for another day. As it stands, Browne picked up another big TKO win, and the only thing more gruesome than Mitrione’s eye are his free agent prospects following the tough loss.

It was a tough night for Matt Mitrione in Boston, but the picture he just posted to Twitter has even more bad news for the UFC heavyweight…

UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione was hoping to test the waters of free agency with a victory over Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81, but it didn’t quite work out that way. After a tough few rounds with ‘Hapa,”Meathead’ eventually succumbed to strikes in the final stanza. Officially a TKO, Mitrione suffered a hard loss at the worst time possible. But it wasn’t that cut and dry for everyone.

Two eye pokes from Browne throughout the fight have sparked debate in the time since, and a grizzly replay of the moments after the fight show the harrowing injury that Mitrione suffered to his eye. Was this a punch or poke?

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones may have joked about the fouls during the fight, but to ‘Meathead’ this is no laughing matter whatsoever. He also suffered a shoulder injury, meaning he could have trouble finding work regardless of where he decides to fight next.

Taking to Twitter, Mitrione not only revealed the extent of the injury to his eye, but also blames the eye pokes for his loss to Browne:

Ouch, who would have thought that nasty swollen eye could have got any worse?

So what are your thoughts on this brutal TKO at UFC Fight Night 81? Did Mitrione suffer a controversial loss, or were the eye pokes just a precursor to the inevitable ending? Many fighters have been subject to similar debates in the past, and not much has been done to combat the eye pokes in MMA to this day.

Jon Jones Reacts To Travis Browne’s Eye Pokes At UFC Boston

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is upset about Travis Browne stealing his favorite move, wonder how long it’ll be before this one’s deleted… The UFC Fight Night 81 event in Boston provided many fireworks and talking points last night (Sunday January 17, 2015), none more so than the changing of hands of yet another title.

The UFC Fight Night 81 event in Boston provided many fireworks and talking points last night (Sunday January 17, 2015), none more so than the changing of hands of yet another title. The champion TJ Dillashaw took on the former boss Dominick Cruz in the evening’s main event, and the Boston crowd got to witness yet another champ losing their title in a crazy 12 month run of title switches.

For his part as the ruler of the 135-pound division, Dillashaw provided two great finishes over the formerly untouchable Renan Barao, and those duo of fights won’t be forgotten in a hurry, but ‘The Dominator’ was just too crafty and experienced for the young Alpha Male exile.

Another scrap that provided a highly unexpected ending was Travis Browne against Matt Mitrione in the heavyweight division. The two hard hitting big men fought it out on the main card in Boston, with a disgusting injury marring the evening for ‘Meathead,’ and it wasn’t without it’s fair share of controversy too.

It was a good fight, but ‘Hapa’ would ultimately win the day with a third round TKO over Mitrione, although a couple of eye pokes would leave ‘Meathead’s’ eye grotesquely swollen and disfigured when all was said and done. Check it out:

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was watching closely as his former Jackson’s MMA team mate defeated Mitrione, and his Tweet about eye pokes is hilarious. Apparently Browne got wind of this too, and has also reacted to the accusations of being a ‘dirty fighter.’

A devastating contract-ending TKO loss after two eyepokes wasn’t the only thing that Travis Browne left Matt Mitrione at UFC Boston last night…

Heavyweight Matt Mitrione was looking for a big win as his contract expired against Travis Browne on the main card of last night’s (January 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, but instead he got something quite a bit more undesirable.

Appearing to control the earlygoing with his quick hands and footwork, a brutal eyepoke from Browne’s pinkie finger caused a temporary halt to the bout to let ‘Meathead’ recover. He did, but a second and worse eyepoke, this time from Browne’s thumb, caused another break as Mitrione’s right eye appeared to be visibly affected and swollen despite no point being taken from Browne.

Browne seemed to capitalize from that point on, nailing a slowing Mitrione with a huge shot on his eye before picking him up in a huge slam to open the floodgates for a barrage of ground and pound that eventually earned ‘Hapa’ a TKO win. But that wasn’t all that Mitrione came out of the bout with, as he suffered a strange injury that immediately had the Internet abuzz.

Read on to the next page to see more of what happened to ‘Meathead’ in Boston.

Travis Browne Beats Matt Mitrione in Foul-Filled Fight at UFC Fight Night 81

Matt Mitrione and Travis Browne entered UFC Fight Night 81 at a career crossroads.

Mitrione walked into the cage with free agency in mind. Openly discussing his intent to test the market, this bout would determine if suitors would see him as a fringe top-10 player, or a 37-year-old coming off back-to-back losses.

Browne’s situation was quite different, though. Despite his solid 8-3-1 UFC record, poorly timed losses have consistently kept him from moving too deeply into the top-10 rankings. 1-2 over his last three, with his most recent loss coming via devastating knockout, he needed a win to maintain a spot among the heavyweight’s elite class.

Obviously, one of them would be dealt a tough blow in this fight. That one would be Mitrione.

Neither man wowed the other in the first. Both respected the others’ power with Mitrione applying pressure utilizing combinations, and Browne attempting to ply his reach advantage. While neither landed much in terms of volume, both successfully asserted their power.

An eye poke at the end of the first round would, unfortunately, set the tone for the second. As Mitrione pressed forward, Browne once again went knuckle deep into Mitrione‘s eye, breaking the round in half on the scorecards.

When action was reset, a whiffed superman punch from Mitrione would turn into a successful Browne takedown.

While Mitrione would escape several submission attempts, those precious moments of top control put him into a difficult position on the scorecards.

Oddly, Mitrione entered the third flat, which eventually led to a firm right cross from Browne. That one shot sucked out any steam that may have been left in the veteran and instantly turned him into a punching bag.

Browne went on offense in a big way from there, wrenching Mitrione to the ground and landing in mount.

Mitrione would try and buck his way out, but Browne stayed on top and landed hellish strikes from top position. The ref would call things off at 4:09 of Round 3.

Here are some notes and thoughts from this fight:

  • This fight will go down as a win for Browne, but this can be labeled as a “dirty” victory for Hapa. The two eye pokes completely changed the progression of the fight, and Mitrione popped up at the end, sporting two nasty, visible injuries.
  • All that said, Mitrione shouldn’t feel too cheated in defeat. His offense was, at best, sloppy, and he didn’t land any particularly hard shots on Browne. While he put on a decent show, this performance was telling in regards to his place in the division.
  • As stated, this is an incredibly difficult loss for Mitrione. The UFC will most likely be completely content in letting him head to Bellator or WSOF, and that directly translates to a smaller payday for him.
