Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey confirmed Thursday she’s engaged to marry fellow UFC fighter Travis Browne.

TMZ Sports passed along the news. Browne proposed in New Zealand “about a week ago,” and Rousey accepted. She said the couple is hoping for a wedding “soon” but didn’t provide an official date.

Rousey, 30, rose to superstardom with a dominant series of results en route to building a 12-0 MMA record, winning both the Strikeforce and UFC bantamweight titles along the way.

The mainstream attention allowed the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo to acquire more opportunities outside of the Octagon. She earned roles in multiple movies, including The Expendables 3 and Furious 7, and hosted NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Her competitive success came to a screeching halt over the past two years. She suffered back-to-back knockout losses to Holly Holm at UFC 193 and Amanda Nunes at UFC 207.

In January, UFC President Dana White stated on the UFC Unfiltered podcast that Rousey likely wouldn’t fight again, per Dann Stupp of MMA Junkie.

“In the conversation I had with her, if I had to say right here right now—again I don’t like saying right here right now because it’s up to her—but I wouldn’t say she fights again,” he said. “I think she’s probably done.”

Meanwhile, Browne has remained active in the Octagon, though he’s also struggled. The 34-year-old heavyweight fighter has lost three straight bouts, the most recent being a second-round knockout at the hands of Derrick Lewis in February.

The UFC is slowly but surely putting together a card for UFC 213 and recently it was reported that the promotion is looking to add a heavyweight bout to the event. The UFC is working on booking Travis Browne vs. Aleksei Oleinik at the event, according to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

Browne (18-6-1) has been on a losing streak as of late as he has lost his three bouts in a row and is coming off a knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in February. Before that, he suffered losses to Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez. He hasn’t won a fight since January of 2016.

On the other side, Oleinik (51-10-1) has won 12 of his last 13 fights, and the Russian veteran is making his name known in the division. He is coming off a submission win over Viktor Pesta in January, which marked the first time in UFC history someone won a fight via that particular choke.

The UFC has already announced a bout for this event, which ironically is a heavyweight bout as well between Alistair Overeem and Werdum. This will be a trilogy fight between these two fighters.

The event takes place on July 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada at the T-Mobile Arena. As of this writing, the UFC has yet to announce a main event for the show.

The UFC’s traditional blockbuster July pay-per-view (PPV), which will come in the form of July 8’s UFC 213 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this year, may have just signed on a pivotal heavyweight bout.

Just moments ago, MMA Fighting confirmed a report that former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will meet former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem at the midsummer spectacular.

The heavyweight legends have met twice before, with Werdum submitting Overeem in Pride FC back in 2006 before “The Demolition Man” got his revenge five years later in Strikeforce in a lackluster decision win where Werdum mainly flopped to the ground in a vain effort to get the hulking Dutch kickboxer to engage him on the ground.

No. 1-ranked Werdum has had a run of strange circumstances as of late, seeing fights with Cain Velasquez at UFC 207 and Ben Rothwell at UFC 211 in May fall apart due to his opponents being deemed unfit to fight and failing a USADA drug test, respectively. Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold called him out for an oddly-matched bout, but Werdum refused after calling the AKA product ‘chicken’ before discussing a trilogy bout with Overeem, which is ultimately close to coming to fruition. ‘Vai Cavalo’ was most recently seen dismantling old foe Travis Browne.

Overeem has enjoyed a late-career resurgence of sorts, winning five out of his last six bouts while falling just short in a title bid against champion Stipe Miocic at last September’s UFC 203. “The Reem” got back on track in impressive fashion with a vicious knee stoppage of fan favorite Mark Hunt at March 4’s UFC 209.

In a heavyweight division lacking true title contenders outside of the rising Francis Ngannou, this fight should potentially be for the next title shot against the winner of the Miocic vs. Junior dos Santos rematch in the main event of UFC 211.

The fight has not yet been officially confirmed by the UFC.

If you’re awaiting Cain Velasquez’s return to the cage, you’re going to be waiting a little longer.

The oft-injured American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) star, who’s fought only twice since his fateful brutalization of longtime rival Junior dos Santos at UFC 166 in 2013, was recently forced out of his scheduled rematch with Fabricio Werdum at last December’s UFC 207 due to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) refusing to license the former heavyweight champion.

Velasquez was set to undergo back surgery after the fight – the eighth surgery of his decorated yet stalling career – and the governing commission found him unfit to throw down. There’s currently no set timetable for Velasquez’s return, as longtime head coach Javier Mendez told Submission Radio (via MMA Mania) that Velasquez “hardly ever” ventures into AKA and most likely will not fight soon:

“He comes in the gym on a rare occasion, but he’s slowly coming back into it. He’s not jumping on board to do anything, he’s just taking his time. I know that May 11 is something they’re looking at, but realistically Cain is not gonna fight on short notice. He’s not gonna fight without an eight-week training camp. So I look at it like if he’s hardly ever coming into the gym now because he has other business things he has to take care of, I don’t see him fighting (soon). I see him fighting two times this year, but I don’t see him fighting in May because of the timeframe.”

That’s far from good news for the troubled contender, who has long been described as one of the best heavyweights in MMA history, with many feeling he would be far and away the best if he could only stay healthy.

Velasquez was last seen demolishing heavyweight punching bag Travis Browne in a beautiful display of violence at last summer’s UFC 200, but with his bouts now averaging over a year-and-a-half in between them in recent years, coupled with this current revelation he’s hardly preparing to fight, it’s safe to wonder if the onetime pound-for-pound star will ever be able to consistently dominate the division that was his and his alone only a few short years ago.

The good news, if there is any, is that Velasquez can obviously get right back into the title picture in the ultra-shallow UFC heavyweight landscape with only one big win, and it wouldn’t be unheard of to see him get a title shot if a few things went the right way.

If and when that happens, his fans can only wish he’s able to answer the call, and from the sounds of things currently, that’s far from the case. Will Velasquez ever be the same?
