Geane Herrera leaves behind two young children.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight Geane Herrera, who also competed for Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), was killed in a motorcycle crash last weekend in Tampa, Fla., after striking the back of a vehicle and being thrown “several hundred feet,” according to MMA Junkie.

Herrera, who was just 33 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Geane leaves behind a 16 year-old son, his 3-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, a brother and a family that loves him and will deeply miss him,” his family wrote on GoFundMe. “Geane was full of life, always trying to live life to the fullest, he was a dedicated athlete with big dreams of making a difference and leaving his print in this world. He was such a happy go lucky person that left a mark in everyone that came into his life.”

“Geane was an American mixed martial artist competing in the Flyweight division. He competed primarily for regional organizations in the Southeastern United States where he amassed an undefeated record of 8–0, before signing with the UFC in 2014 and then in 2019 joined the BKFC. He won a few fights lost some others but every time no matter what happened always had a positive outlook to life and his craft. He was a dedicated sportsman that unfortunately because of an injury was unable to keep fighting professionally.”

Herrera (10-3) was just 1-3 in four fights inside the Octagon, parting ways with the promotion following a unanimous decision loss to Ben Nguyen at UFC Melbourne back in late 2016. “La Pulga” would later link up with BKFC, stopping Abdiel Velazquez by way of technical knockout in summer 2021.

According to ABC Action News, Geane Herrera crashed into a jeep, going at very ‘high speeds’ and after hitting the jeep, the motorcyclist struck the concrete barrier, and came back onto the roadway where he and the bike tumbled for several hundred feet. The motorcycle then burst into flames and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

Herrera was just 33 years old and had a 10-3 record in MMA. In the UFC, he lost a decision to Ray Borg in his promotional debut and followed that up with a TKO win over Joby Sanchez. He then dropped back-to-back decisions to Ali Bagautinov and Ben Nguyen and was released. He fought one more time in MMA defeating Darren Mima by submission at ACB 85.

“As is widely known funeral services are very expensive and our family does not have the means to cover the costs. We are asking for $50,000 but anything helps to cover for the funeral cost and leave a little bit of money for his son and future baby to give them some time to adjust and figure out life without their father going forward. We are asking family, friends, fans, the UFC community, the BKFC community, the fighting world and any stranger that can relate to our tragedy for support. Any little bit counts, please donate and help Geane’s family deal with this tragedy in any way,” part of the GoFundMe reads.

Herrera leaves behind a 16-year-old son, his 3-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, and a brother.

Former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is currently in the running for the next 155-pound title shot, thanks to his stunning “BMF” performance against lightweight contender Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 last month in Las Vegas.

Holloway is not expected to pose a “huge threat” to current champion, Islam Makhachev.

“I mean, it really comes down to strategy and gameplan,” coach Javier Mendez told Submission Radio. “And that’s like what I alluded to, was Justin Gaethje. He doesn’t use his wrestling. Islam Makhachev is not going to go and stand with Max [for] the whole five rounds. He’s going to take him down, he’s going to work him on the ground. [If] Max gets up, he’s going to take him down again. He’s going to beat him in the stand up, beat him on the ground.”

Makhachev (25-1) averages 3.17 takedowns per 15 minutes of action. Holloway (26-7) has been outwrestled multiple times in his MMA career against the likes of Alex Volkanovski, Frankie Edgar, and Brian Ortega, just to make a few.

“So, it’ll be a grueling situation for Max,” Mendez continued. “Not as much for Islam. Because Max doesn’t really have great wrestling defense, nor does he care to have it. So, I don’t look at him as a huge threat. Though, he’s proven us wrong. So, he can very well prove us wrong. And the fans may want to see it. So, if the fans want to see it, Islam wants the fight, UFC offers it, there it is, there’s the next one.”

UFC has yet to decide if Holloway or Arman Tsarukyan will be granted the next crack at the 155-pound crown. That decision may depend on whether or not Makhachev retains his title when he collides with Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 next month in Newark.

Colby Covington “talks a lot,” according to Charles Oliveira.

That’s why the former UFC lightweight champion is not putting much energy into the recent callout from “Chaos,” who wants to be the first welterweight to welcome “Do Bronx” to the 170-pound weight class. At the same time, Oliveira would not be opposed to the pairing, assuming the promotion finds merit in the matchup.

“Man, in reality it’s like I said, it’s sitting down and looking at legacy, history, values,” Oliveira told Ag Fight. “You have to sit down. When I woke up in the morning, thousands of people were sending me messages, I sent it to Diego [Lima] and Diego said it too, I see what you think.”

“I said, ‘Diego, just sit down, talk, think, see what’s good, see what the UFC thinks about it.’ It’s not just what Charles thinks, it’s about what the UFC thinks about it. [Colby] is a talkative guy, he’s a guy who talks a lot, so let’s see. If it makes sense, if it’s something good for me, why not?”

Oliveira (34-10, 1 NC) is coming off a split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 back in April. Losing to “Ahalkalakets” left the Brazilian sitting at No. 2 in the official lightweight rankings. Covington (17-4) has managed to retain a spot in the welterweight Top 5 despite losing three of his last five.

“Chaos” has not competed since losing to Leon Edwards at UFC 296.

Islam Makhachev's coach warns Max Holloway from title fight it will be gruelling

Javier Mendez, the head coach of Islam Makhachev has warned Max Holloway over a potential fight between the two.

Holloway is coming off a thrilling fifth-round knockout win over Justin Gaethje to win the BMF title. After the win, Holloway called out Ilia Topuria for the featherweight title, as he would return to his weight class. But, many fans wanted to see him stay at lightweight and fight Makhachev for the lightweight title.

If Holloway does stay at 155lbs and face Makhachev, Mendez believes it will be a long night for the Hawaiian.

“Justin Gaethje doesn’t use his wrestling. Islam Makhachev is not gonna go and stand with Max. He’s gonna take him down…so, it will be a grueling situation for Max. So, I don’t look at him as a huge threat,” Mendez said to Submission Radio.

Currently, Makhachev is set to defend his lightweight title against Dustin Poirier on June 1 in Newark, New Jersey. Should he win that, Holloway could face Makhachev for the belt, but if it does happen, Mendez does think it will be a tough fight for him.

Islam Makhachev shot down Max Holloway matchup

Although Javier Mendez believes Max Holloway will have a long night against Islam Makhachev, the lightweight champ hasn’t shown much interest in the fight.

After UFC 300, Makhachev says Arman Tsarukyan will be next after Poirier as he believes Holloway would need to win a couple of fights at 155lbs to get a title shot, so he doesn’t have much interest in the scrap.

“If he beats a couple more guys in my division, we can fight,” Makhachev told the New York Post. “I don’t want to give him chance now because I have some contenders who I have to beat. Now I have Dustin, after we’ll have Arman [Tsarukyan]. I think I’ll have some [work] in my division, he has [work] in his division. Maybe if he wins his next fight. Maybe [if] he beats [Ilia] Topuria, and I finish all of my two fights, maybe.”

Makhachev has also hinted at moving up to welterweight to try and become a champ-champ should he beat Poirier at UFC 302.
