After he knocked out Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 on July 30, 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia to become the undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley made it clear that he was interested in ‘money fights’ with Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz rather than a clash with deserving No. 1-contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Woodley wasn’t granted his wish, however, and he and Thompson will battle for 170-pound supremacy in the co-main event of November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York.

The two came face to face last week at the UFC 205 press conference, and surprisingly, Woodley received a harsh welcome from the fans. Not only did there appear to be some tension between “The Chosen One” and the fans, but many expected there to be tension between the two combatants as well, as Woodley recently said that he didn’t respect Thompson.

“Wonderboy” feels as if this was simply a ‘scare tactic’, however, as he admitted that things were ‘cool’ between the two at the press conference:

“Yeah, everything was cool during last week, during the media. We were talking to each other, shaking hands. Like I said, it might have been like a scare tactic or something he was trying to do to get in my head,” Thompson told Submission Radio. “And obviously I let him know real quick it’s not gonna work.”

Continuing on, “Wonderboy”, who doesn’t appear to be bothered by Woodley’s actions, said that the fans may have gotten into the head of the titleholder:

“And looking in his eyes, I don’t know if there was a little disappointment there that I saw. I figured that he might’ve thought that the fans maybe would’ve had his back. He was a little surprised that they were booing him and I could tell that, and I think that’s in his head a little bit.”

Who do you see walking away with welterweight gold next month?

Jim Miller Steps Up To Fight Thiago Alves In New York

Originally, New York native and No. 13-ranked lightweight Al Iaquinta was slated to meet former welterweight title challenger Thiago “Pitbull” Alves at November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York. Yesterday (September 19, 2016), however, Iaquinta announced that he was pulling out of the bout due to contract disputes with the promotion.

The UFC has quickly found a replacement for Iaquinta as MMAJunkie has reported that veteran Jim Miller has stepped up to take on Alves.

The New Jersey native has gotten back to his winning ways in recent memory, picking up back-to-back to victories over the likes of Takanori Gomi and Jou Lauzon.

Alves, on the other hand, will be making his 155-pound debut in this bout. The “Pitbull” is coming off of a brutal loss to former interim 170-pound champion Carlos Condit, but prior to that he had won two straight over Seth Baczynski and Jordan Mein.

UFC 205 is still searching for a main event, but it was recently announced that welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will defend his title against Stephen Thompson on the card. Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman will also face off with surging contender Yoel “The Soldier of God” Romero.

A lightweight title tilt between champion Eddie Alvarez and 145-pound king Conor McGregor has been rumored as a possible headliner, but nothing has been finalized just yet.

Tyron Woodley Hopes Carlos Condit Comes Back Soon

The UFC welterweight division has undergone massive change since Georges St-Pierre left the throne. That was back in 2013, and since that time we’ve seen three champions at 170 pounds. First off it was St-Pierre’s old rival Johny Hendricks who claimed the belt against Robbie Lawler. Then ‘Ruthless’ came back with a vengeance to win the belt in their rematch. Lawler would hold the title for 18 months, defending with a TKO over Rory MacDonald at UFC 189, and an extremely narrow decision over Carlos Condit at UFC 195.

Following his much debated victory against ‘The Natural Born Killer,’ Lawler would sit out for six months before taking on Tyron Woodley. When they finally met in the octagon at UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ would break the record for fastest ever knockout in a welterweight title fight. Woodley starched Lawler in just over two minutes, and so a new champion was born. Taking just minutes to rock the boat, Woodley seemingly snubbed number one contender Stephen Thompson.

Money Fights

Tyron Woodley claimed he was interested in the money fights of the division-Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz. This angered many fans, and left ‘Wonderboy’ confused and upset. Then came the big announcement yesterday. Woodley would indeed face Thomposon in his first defense, and at UFC 205 in New York no less. Contrary to what many had believed, ‘The Chosen One’ claims he had accepted the fight weeks ago. Speaking during a live Facebook Q & A yesterday, Woodley set the record straight on this whole saga.

“I accepted that fight weeks back. The only reason I couldn’t announce it was because the UFC wanted to wait for the right platform. Some of you guys pushed my buttons on social media, saying I was scared to fight (Thompson), and I came close to revealing it. I had to wait though, and yesterday Dana White told me ‘Go ahead and announce it.’ We are going to be getting down, and it is not going to be a pretty sight for ‘Mr. Wonderboy’ because I feel like he hasn’t taken my skills set seriously. I’m going to prove that, many times, until people get it through their thick skull that I’m the best welterweight in the world. I’m going to call him wonder woman.”

Woodley on Condit

Tyron Woodley was then asked which fighter he respected the most. He declared Carlos Condit, his former opponent, as one of the greatest welterweights ever and one he’s looked up to his whole career:

“The fighter I respect the most; Carlos Condit is a fighter I looked up to for a very long time. He has currently one of the highest finishing rates of all welterweights. When we fought there was a lot of respect, and after we fought too. He has never said ‘I slipped in the octagon,’ or ‘I was injured and that’s why I lost to Tyron.’ He has always said he wanted the opportunity to avenge the loss. Meaning he wanted to earn it back through separate bouts. He was one of the guys that was respecting the fact I wanted to fight Georges St-Pierre. Shout out to Carlos Condit, The Natural Born Killer, I hope we see him back in the octagon soon.”

After Condit’s recent loss to Demian Maia, there’s been speculation on the former WEC champion’s retirement. It’s good to hear Woodley talking up his former opponent, and let’s hope ‘The Natural Born Killer’ does make it back soon.

After knocking out Robbie Lawler at July 30’s UFC 201 to become the undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley seemed more interested in ‘money fights’ with Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz rather than a fight with the rightful No. 1-contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who called out Woodley for a fight later this year in New York.

Well, it appears as if one of these two men got their wish, and it wasn’t the champion.

FOX Sports’ Damon Martin reported earlier today (September 16, 2016) that Woodley vs. Thompson has been set for November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden:

Woodley also confirmed the news on the UFC Fight Night 94 weigh-ins show.

Prior to knocking out Lawler, Woodley had picked up back-to-back victories over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum.

“Wonderboy”, on the other hand, has been on absolute tear as of late, winning seven straight bouts including four by way of finish. His most recent victories came in dominant fashion over former champion Johny Hendricks last February and longtime top contender Rory MacDonald this past June.

Woodley will be looking to make the first defense of his title in this bout, but the fight likely won’t be the only title fight on the card.

A lightweight title clash between reigning champion Eddie Alvarez and 145-pound king Conor McGregor has been rumored as a possible headliner, but the fight is currently not a done deal.

Stephen Thompson Campaigns For Title Shot: This Is My Division Baby

UFC 201 went down last night (July 30, 2016) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, and yet another title changed hands in the main event. Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley blitzed Robbie Lawler early on, landing a brutal shot on the “Ruthless” one and ending the fight early to walk away with the welterweight strap.

In the aftermath of the fight, Woodley appeared on FOX Sports 1 and was greeted by No. 1-ranked Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, a man who could serve as Woodley’s next opponent. “Wonderboy” took this time to explain to not only “The Chosen One”, but to the world why he deserves a shot at gold:

“He’s won (three) in a row,” Thompson said on UFC 201’s post-fight show. “How many have I won? Seven in a row. I’ve cleaned out the division for this guy. Listen, I’ve got more wins under me in a row than he does, I’ve beat the best, I’ve beat the No. 1 (in Johny Hendricks), I’ve beat the No. 2 (in Rory MacDonald) – not just in a five-round fight; (Hendricks) was in the first round.”

Despite Thompson being the clear cut No. 1 contender, Woodley seemed far more interested in ‘money fights’ with ex-champion Georges St. Pierre and returning fan favorite Nick Diaz. “Wonderboy” didn’t say Woodley was scared, but he did say that he was gunning for the top:

“I’m not going to say he’s scared, because I know he’s not scared,” Thompson said. “He wants that money fight, but I think I’m going to be making more money when I put this foot upside his head. I’m just telling you. It’s going to happen. This is my division, baby. That’s it.”

Who would you like to see get the next crack at the 170-pound throne?

Tyron Woodley Calls Out Nick Diaz For ‘Money Fight’ At UFC 202

Continuing the jaw-dropping streak of UFC champions losing their belt by brutal stoppage, new welterweight champion Tyron Woodley put a stamp on his title victory when he knocked out Robbie Lawler with one massive punch in the main event of last night’s (Sat., July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

After the bout, Woodley appeared on the post-fight show on FOX Sports 1, where top-ranked welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson was auspiciously a co-host for the evening. With two straight wins over Rory MacDonald and Johny Hendricks, it’s largely perceived that “Wonderboy” would receive the next shot, something he predictably called out for while interviewing Woodley:

“That was a first round finish, and I know you’re not injured. What are the chances we get it on in November my friend?”

But while “Wonderboy” wants to fight Woodley at the UFC’s New York debut event of UFC 205 in November, the new champ has other plans. He’s said he’s looking for a big money fight with a certain returning fan favorite instead:

Woodley took a jab at Thompson by citing his preference to fight Lawler rather than him, and said he would rather get a more lucrative bout with longtime veteran Nick Diaz, who returns from suspension next month, at August’s UFC 202:

“Well this is what I think, I think that you say you wanted to fight Robbie Lawler, and you’ll get an opportunity to fight Robbie Lawler, because who I wanna fight now is, I think now Nick Diaz comes off of suspension in two days, he’s a money fight. I’ve been in this game, I’m an O.G., I wanna make the big dough, so if he wants to fight August with his brother Nate Diaz, I think me and him can show down at that event. I’m uninjured, August, I’m ready to go, 202, let’s make the money. I think he’s deserved it, I think he’s put enough butts in the seats, he deserves to make that payday, so let’s go get it.”

Thompson wouldn’t stop pressing the issue, however, issuing a bit of a half-hearted congratulations to Woodley before proclaiming he could beat both Woodley and Diaz:

“I know I got your number. I know you count on Nick Diaz; I know I can beat both of you guys. I’m just saying man, come on, you gotta give it to me!”

Woodley had the perfect response for that, stating that “Wonderboy “ will have his chance after he gets his big payday and Thompson fights some lower-ranked ‘young buck’ contenders:

“You’ll get your chance after I go make this money. You and the rest of the ‘young bucks’ can scrap each other up; Gastelum and Magny, I’m gonna go get that money.”
