Colby Covington rips UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley after it was revealed that he decided to undergo surgery for a hand injury. The UFC gave the latest title shot to rising prospect Darren Till. This led to Woodley getting a dominant win over Till at UFC 228 earlier this month.

Another Delay

Following this fight, Woodley went on record by stating that he was willing to fight Covington at the UFC 230 pay-per-view event on one condition. That was if he can get medically cleared for a thumb injury. However, that was not meant to be.

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City. The UFC has yet to name a headliner for this upcoming event, which has led to a lot of speculation as to who will serve as the main event. Woodley vs. Covington could’ve been the perfect fight. The UFC welterweight champion revealed to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that he would be sidelined for 8-12 weeks due to a hand injury.

Now, this fight has been delayed once again and will likely go down in the first quarter 2019. Covington recently went to his official Twitter account to put the UFC champion on notice. Here is what he wrote:

“That brittle ***** fights 1.5 rounds in 14 months and needs another ‘surgery?’ Quit playing games Tyrone.” Covington said. “You know whenever those nerds get done putting you back together. I’m just gonna tear you apart and end you for good. Accept your fate or be stripped of your No. 1 contender spot.”

Covington earned the interim welterweight title after being able to score a decision win over former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the co-main event of the main card for UFC 225 pay-per-view event at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Tyron Woodley’s Coach Thinks He’s Nearing GOAT Status

Tyron Woodley’s coach thinks he is nearing welterweight greatness.

Tyron Woodley’s coach thinks he is nearing welterweight greatness.

Just how good is the reigning defending welterweight champion T-Wood? Only Hall of Famers Georges St-Pierre and Matt Hughes have more title defenses at 170 pounds than Woodley. St-Pierre has a staggering nine defenses and Hughes has five from his time as a dominant champion. If Woodley is able to defend his title one more time he will tie Hughes with five successful defenses.

Since day one, Woodley has had aspirations of greatness. He has repeatedly stated his desire to go down as the greatest welterweight fighter of all time. Though that title is usually given to GSP, Woodley is definitely in the discussion for the top three.

Woodley most recently defeated the previously unbeaten Darren Till in the main event of UFC 228. In so doing retaining his title for the fourth straight time. Now Woodley’s coach Din Thomas believes with another successful defense “The Chosen One” will be on par with St-Pierre.

Din Thomas on T-Wood

“I think, at this point, I’m going to have to say second,” Thomas said recently on The MMA Hour when asked to assess Woodley’s all-time welterweight ranking. “Like you said, I think his résumé speaks for itself, when you think of the guys that he has beaten, even in his come-up, between like Carlos Condit, Kelvin Gastelum, Robbie Lawler. He’s beaten all those guys.

“But I think that a couple more title defenses will solidify his position. I think that’s all he needs. A win over Colby — to me, I think Colby’s an easy opponent, to be honest with you, but just on the résumé he kinda needs that just so he can have more title defenses — and maybe even Usman, but if he gets those two then he’s the best of all-time.”

Covington Next

A fight between Woodley and Covington seems like a foregone conclusion. UFC president Dana White stated before UFC 228 that “Chaos” is the next in line to challenge for the welterweight title. Although White has been known to waffle on his words ion the past.

“He doesn’t have anything that’s dangerous to Tyron,” Thomas explained. “He doesn’t have the ability to knock him out with one punch if Tyron slips, he doesn’t have the ability to choke Tyron out — to play ‘take him down, take his back, choke him out.’ I don’t think he has that ability. The way Colby can win that fight is to obviously grind him out, and I don’t think he can outwrestle Tyron to get up to that point. So to me, that’s just kind of an easier matchup.”

Woodley was rumored to be defending his title at UFC 230 on November 3. However, it has since been revealed that he will be sidelined for eight to 12 weeks because of hand surgery stemming from a dislocated thumb and three torn ligaments.

Woodley & White Beef

White and Woodley have had a contentious relationship in the past. So when White was conspicuously absent from the UFC 228 press conference the media perceived White’s action as a sleight to Woodley. However, Thomas wouldn’t go that far.

“Being on the (Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight) show with Dana, I know how hard he works. I know his schedule and I know he keeps everything really tight, so I would never speculate that he didn’t show up because he disliked Tyron or he didn’t want Tyron to win,” Thomas said. “In fact, when he came into the cage, he kinda gave me a nod and was like, ‘Good job.’ I mean, of course everybody’s going to speculate that he didn’t like it, but I know, like I said, Dana keeps a very tight schedule. I know that he was leaving — I was talking to his security guy afterward saying, ‘Man, we got a flight to catch.’

“And sometimes Dana, it’s just like, his schedule, he’s tired all the time, so I don’t want to use that as the excuse but I just know he keeps a tight schedule. So that’s the only reason why I could see he wouldn’t be at the press conference. I would like to see him come out with a statement and congratulate Tyron. That would be good, because it’s easy to criticize fighters, but when they show and prove, when they show up and give you what you ask, I think it’s only right to give them their props.”

Georges St-Pierre Addresses Why He Won’t Fight Tyron Woodley

GSP has explained why he won’t fight the UFC welterweight champion.

Georges St-Pierre addresses the reason that he doesn’t have much interest in fighting UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley inside of the Octagon.

GSP’s Last Fight

The former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion returned to competition in November of 2017 after four years away from the sport to win the middleweight title.

The ending of that fight went down with a submission victory in the third round over Michael Bisping at UFC 217. However, shortly after the fight, he had to vacate the title as he is dealing with colitis.

Georges St-Pierre Addresses

The UFC gave the latest title shot to rising prospect Darren Till. This led to Woodley getting a dominant win over Till at UFC 228 earlier this month. For months, Woodley called for a showdown against GSP.

However, that is not a mutual interest as the former champion went on record in a recent interview by stating that he doesn’t want to fight Woodley.

“In terms of coming back to fighting, you have to realize I have a lot more to lose than to win. Tyron Woodley wants to fight me because he has a lot more to win than to lose because if he beats me in terms of legacy, in terms of popularity, he has a lot more to win,” St-Pierre explained to FanSided.com. “It’s not that I’m scared, actually, I’m always scared when I go fight, I’m scared of everybody but being scared is irrelevant because I’m going to walk the walk if I have to do it. I have to choose carefully what is my next move.

For at this point I am with cementing my legacy it is not a straight line. I have to check what can I gain, what can I lose. That is why when I fought Michael Bisping it was a win/win situation from both sides. If I were to lose I lose but if I win, I win big so it was good. Fighting Tyron Woodley right now, now that he won his last fight it elevates his stock a little bit more but it’s still not a complete win/win situation for me.”

Tyron Woodley Thinks Conor McGregor Is Coming For Him Next

Woodley actually has a valid point behind this belief.

The post Tyron Woodley Thinks Conor McGregor Is Coming For Him Next appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Tyron Woodley thinks former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ Conor McGregor is coming for him once he gets done with his next fight and is healthy enough to fight once again.

Woodley is fresh off a submission win over Darren Till in the headliner of UFC 228 to retain his welterweight title. However, he won’t be fighting former UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington right away. The UFC welterweight champion revealed to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that he would be sidelined for 8-12 weeks due to a hand injury.

Tyron Woodley Thinks Conor McGregor Is Coming For Him

It should be noted that prior to this news coming out, Woodley went on record by stating on his show that is on TMZ’s platform that he thinks McGregor is coming for him next. The reasoning behind his belief is due to historic purposes. McGregor’s UFC 229 fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title is quickly approaching as this fight goes down next month.

Woodley’s Explanation

The UFC welterweight champion believes that if McGregor can beat the UFC lightweight champion then he would try to move up to 170-pounds. This would give him the chance to win three UFC titles at three different weight classes.

He beat Jose Aldo to win the UFC featherweight title, Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title then potentially Woodley for the welterweight title.

“If Conor wins, the only fight that makes sense for him is to fight me,” Tyron said on ‘The Hollywood Beatdown’ … “[he’ll] try to get a 3rd belt.”
