If Tyron Woodley Can Beat “Wonderboy”, Will The People Accept Him As Their Champ?

To put it bluntly, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley rubs people the wrong way. Whether it’s for lack of personality, big money fight call outs, or playing the race card, for some reason or another he hasn’t exactly been a big smash hit with the fans. Until now…maybe?

Tough Crowd

To put it concisely, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley rubs people the wrong way. Whether it’s for lack of personality, big money fight call outs, or playing the race card, for some reason or another he hasn’t exactly been a big smash hit with the fans. Until now…maybe?

One of the biggest critique of Tyron Woodley is that he’s been ducking fights. He recently fought the much touted Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson to a majority draw at UFC 205. While it didn’t settle much on the scorecard – it did show that he could bang with the karate phenom, almost finishing him in Rd 4 . Now it seems after failed negotiations for a super fight with middleweight champ Michael Bisping, the two will meet again at UFC 209.

In a recent episode on his podcast “The Morning Wood”, he revealed that him and Wonderboy would again be sharing the octagon on March 4th.

“March 4th, UFC 209 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at what I believe to be the T-Mobile Center, you will see ‘Wonderboy’ get the worst ass-whooping of his life,” Woodley said. “And hopefully all of his fans and all of his over-entitlement deceases at that moment and we can do a eulogy for it.”

“From this point forward, I’m going to commit to taking this dude out in the most embarrassing and worst fashion,” Woodley said. “And with that said, that last fight is in the dust. I ain’t going to cry over spilled milk. I ain’t going to cry over what round, who did what, where, when, where. That fight is in the dust. It’s done, it’s over with.

“This is a new fight, the most important fight of my life, not only to just continue to be the champion and to keep my belt — I can’t allow myself to lose to him and what he stands for and what his fans stand for, and this overly-entitled group of individuals who are in mixed martial arts. I can’t let myself lose to that. So with that said, let’s get to work and let’s get this party on the go.”

So the real question is – even if he beats Wonderboy in March, will people finally accept Tyron Woodley as their champ? Probably not. Let’s face it, the fans want to see him lose. That’s why they’re going to hail whoever he fights next as the person to dethrone him. Don’t get me wrong, Demian Maia and Donald Cerrone are absolute beasts and could very well do the job if Wonderboy can’t take care of business, but I think it’s the case that most fans just can’t connect with the welterweight champ.

To a certain degree he reminds me of Dominick Cruz. Before he was a fan favorite, he was a guy that wasn’t very much liked. “The California Kid” Urijah Faber was definitely the more popular of the two with his surfer vibe and coloquios attitude. Cruz was a bit more serious, more introverted, more in his head. His turning point really happened after his injury, he became one of the best analyst in the game, and started to inspire people with his never say die attitude. His under 2 minute K.O. of Takeya Mizugaki didn’t hurt either.

In my assessment, Woodley will have to keep that belt for a long time for people to really come round to him. At the end of the day you can’t deny someone who keeps on winning (insert Floyd Mayweather exception here).

What do you guys think of the welterweight champ, and how do you think he can turn things around?

Tonight, both Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson will be in action four years after the publication of the following article. Woodley will look to leave no doubt that he is better than Jake Paul while Thompson will be competing against Belal Muhammad at UFC Vegas 45. The two also made headlines earlier this week for having some level of involvement in the Netflix series Cobra Kai.

As far as their own personal history goes, Woodley and Thompson fought one another in the UFC two times. The first encounter at UFC 209 resulted in a majority draw. Prior to their UFC 209 rematch, which Woodley would go on to win, Thompson believed he had “The Chosen One’s Number.”

The welterweight title rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson is finally official. After trading barbs and talk of big money fights, the two finally reached a deal to scrap once again at UFC 209.

“Wonderboy” and “The Chosen One” went to war at UFC 205 in New York City in November. Thompson took an incredible amount of punishment, but was never out of the fight. They went the distance and the fight was ruled a majority draw. Both men earned a “Fight of the Night” bonus.

Woodley still argues that he was the clear winner in their first encounter and that in the rematch, he’ll prove that he is the better fighter. Thompson has other plans (via MMAJunkie Radio):

“There’s going to be no doubt in everybody’s mind who the winner of that fight is going to be, and that’s going to be me.”

Before agreeing to fight “Wonderboy” again, Woodley tried to secure a super fight with Nick Diaz. When that didn’t materialize, he aimed for middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Thompson criticized Woodley for trying to settle for a draw.

“He wants to fight everybody else but me is what it seems like. We did fight to a draw last time, which, in my eyes, we might as well have not even fought at all. It almost seems like he’s happy with a draw, and he’s OK with it. In my eyes, as a champion, I wouldn’t be happy with that.”

Thompson believes he has the champion figured out. The challenger is confident that he will walk away with only his hand raised and gold around his waist.

“I know I can hit him, and I can hit him with some power. I’ve got his number, man. Next time we step out there, I can just go out there and do my thing.”

UFC 209 takes place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 4.

There is no speculation that UFC 209 on March 4 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena will be affected, with details of a headlining, rematch between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Steven Thompson confirmed on Monday. “Wonderboy” spoke to Fox Sports, confirming that he had agreed to the bout before Christmas:

We didn’t negotiate more money or anything. Signed it and sent it back.

“He’s got the bout agreement and he’s probably looking at it right now. UFC wants this fight to happen. We just have unfinished business. As a champion for me, if it was the other way around and I was in Tyron’s shoes, I just couldn’t feel right moving on from that last fight. It was a draw. I didn’t win and there’s a lot of fans that would see this as unfinished business and I just can’t leave it that way. That’s not who I am.

“As a champion, he should be taking this fight because we have not yet determined the winner of it.”

Woodley’s subsequent confirmation of the date has all but tied up an eagerly anticipated 2nd fight between the two, following the [majority] draw decision at UFC 205 which saw the champion retain his belt.

“T-Wood” stated (Via Fox Sports):

“Hopefully all his fans and all his over entitlement will cease at that moment and we can do a eulogy for it.”

Tyron Woodley Accepted ‘Wonderboy’ Rematch to ‘Shut Everybody Up’

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title will be on the line at UFC 209. Champion Tyron Woodley will once again do battle with Stephen Thompson inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 4. The bout will serve as the event’s headliner.

Getting the rematch to come to fruition wasn’t easy. “The Chosen One” had been eyeing a big money fight with Nick Diaz. When that didn’t pan out, Woodley had his sights set on middleweight king Michael Bisping. Those plans fizzled out as well.

The 170-pound champion explained why he decided to have another go with “Wonderboy” (via BJPenn.com):

“You know it is like this. Demian Maia, Nick Diaz, Michael Bisping, Georges St-Pierre, those are all fights I will have in my career. While I am the champion it is important for me to have those fights because defeating all of those guys makes me undeniably the greatest welterweight who has ever fought in the Octagon. So obviously that is important to me. But, I am just trying to pick which fight is the best fight at the right time. You know I wasn’t one hundred percent sold that a rematch with “Wonderboy” was the best thing for me right now. But then I thought let’s do this rematch so that everybody can shut up and we can close this book and move on to another chapter.”

When the two clashed at UFC 205, the fight went the distance and the result was a majority draw. Woodley still feels the decision was off and he should’ve walked out of New York City as the winner.

“Demian Maia obviously, if I was in his position I would be highly upset because I would feel like I am getting the short end of the stick. I would feel like I deserve that title fight and he said it himself, as many people believe, that it wasn’t a draw at UFC 205 and that I won that fight. So now he has to sit in the pocket because of some New York judges, who were probably judging their first MMA fight ever. As you saw from the scorecards it was some really weird judging and on top of the judging, different referees would have stepped in and stopped that fight.”

UFC welterweight champion Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley has finally broken his silence on who his next opponent will be, revealing the news today (Monday, January 9, 2016) on his podcast The Morning Wood Show.

Woodley stated that he’s been contemplating who he wants to step into the Octagon next these past few months, as he has had a plethora of options available to him to choose from:

“I’ve been trying to see to see who my next opponent is going to be,” Woodley said. “Either go up to fight Bisping or defend my belt whether it’s Maia, whether it’s Nick Diaz, whether it’s a rematch or whatever. I was kinda torn between opponents. It’s a great opportunity, it’s great that I’m in a position that so many people want to fight me or fight for the belt, I was kinda torn on what makes the most sense.”

The 170-pound champ would go on to state that No. 1-ranked UFC welterweight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson’s recent comments as of late have gotten under his skin, as he went on social media stating that he’s waiting on Woodley to sign the bout agreement after posting a picture of the fight contract:

“Obviously we talk about this all the time, all these guys are someone I want to fight, but who’s the one that makes the most sense to fight right now? Then here recently last night I started seeing some stuff on Twitter. Wonderwoman, I want to call him Wonder- you-know-what,” Woodley said. “I saw Wonderboy ‘campaigning’ online like a childish women, showing a bout agreement saying ‘I’m waiting on you.’

“He had plenty of opportunities to say something, he saw the buzz between me and Bisping, so he wanted to try and get involved. It kind of annoyed me, it kind of annoyed me because it’s not what a fighter would do. Especially because it’s not a fighter who clearly was never in controversy of winning the fight, the only controversy was if I won the fight or if it was a draw. I don’t like the over-entitlement that Mrs. Wonderboy is displaying right now, it kind of got under my skin.”

Woodley would then reveal that Thompson’s actions upset him so much, that he’s decided to sign on the dotted line to throw-down with ‘Wonderboy’ once again on March 4th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at UFC 209:

“He got under my skin so much that I said ‘I’m just gonna go ahead and fight this dude.’ he got under my skin that bad that I don’t even care about the ration, the money, what fight makes most sense. You need to be careful what you ask for. Wonderboy, you want it? Come get it. You wanna fight? You wanna get done worst than what you did the first time? Some people gotta be real careful — “

What are your thoughts on Woodley finally agreeing to rematch Thompson at UFC 209? Who do you think takes it the second time around?

UFC 209 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) form the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 4t, 2017.

Top UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson signed up for a rematch with Tyron Woodley on December 20.

Now, as we sit early in January, “Wonderboy” is wondering where the UFC welterweight champion is.

Back in November, the two fought to a majority draw after Woodley has been declared the winner. Both talked about a rematch, but the champion has since set his sights on UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping or what he calls a “money-fight.”
