The next UFC welterweight title fight is finally set. Champion Kamaru Usman will make his first career title defense against ex-interim champion Colby Covington. The pair will headline UFC 245 on pay-per-view (PPV) on December 14.

One man who is very familiar with both competitors is former 170-pound king Tyron Woodley. Woodley has fought Usman for five rounds – ultimately losing the welterweight crown to “The Nigerian Nightmare” – and is a former training partner of Covington.

Speaking on his “Hollywood Beatdown” segment for TMZ, Woodley explained why he believes Usman has a slight advantage over “Chaos” in the matchup. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I think Usman’s scrambling abilities are better than Colby’s as far as once you get to a leg,” Woodley said. “Anytime you get to a single leg versus two legs, it’s always a scramble involved. So when you watch Kamaru Usman – like, my teammate Michael Chandler is his training partner – when you watch those guys scramble, going around, this is high-level scrambling.

“I think Usman has a slight edge that is annoying and frustrating to deal with and if he can’t get space, he may not be able to punch Colby, and that takes his advantage in striking away.”

It’s no secret that Woodley and Covington have a heated rivalry with one another, which hopefully gets settled inside the Octagon one day. However, Woodley gives respect where it’s due, praising Covington for his relentless cardio and motor.

Of course, Woodley notes Covington isn’t one to throw power shots, which likely plays into why he conserves so much gas in his tank.

“I think he really, really has a good motor,” Woodley said. “I think he’s in good shape. But it’s not like he’s in good shape because he’s landing explosive, powerful combinations. He’s not exerting his body, throwing powerful shots. He actually punched like he’s swinging little Ottoman cushions around. But when you really think about it, he never has to explode.”

What do you think about Woodley’s breakdown of Usman vs. Covington?

Ahead of his eventual return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has been working with Firas Zahabi at Tristar gym.

Speaking with MMA Junkie, Zahabi detailed his work with “The Chosen One,” who he teases is adding “a new dimension to his game” after suffering a lopsided unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman earlier this year – losing the welterweight title.

“When you’re champion for a long time, people are getting to know your style,” Zahabi said. “I think what happens is everyone is always watching the No. 1 guy, the champion, so they start figuring him out. Not as many people are watching the guy who is No. 10 or No. 15 or No. 4. They’re all watching the No. 1 guy. So the No. 1 guy has to keep reinventing himself.

“With Tyron, we’re going to try to add a new wrinkle that nobody knows so that, when he goes back in there, he’ll be at the same level, of course, but he’ll have new tricks in his bag, new surprises for his opponents. Things that he’s comfortable doing that’ll work and they’re going to have to figure him out on fight night, not before fight night because he’s going to be having a new wrinkle, a new dimension to his game.”

Woodley had a six-fight win streak snapped when he lost to Usman earlier this year. He won the welterweight title back in 2016 after knocking out Robbie Lawler in the first round. After three successful title defenses, Woodley dropped the strap to Usman, who he hopes to rematch down the road to prove he’s truly the better of the pair.

Of course, he’ll have to wait for his shot, as Colby Covington will take on “The Nigerian Nightmare” next in the main event of UFC 245 this December.

What do you think about Zahabi claiming that Woodley is adding a new dimension to his game? Who do you want to see Woodley face upon his return to the Octagon?

At UFC 235 back in March, Tyron Woodley suffered a very disappointing loss to Kamaru Usman to lose his welterweight title. ‘The Chosen One’ was dominated from the get-go and did not look like himself in there.

Although it was a dominating loss, Tyron Woodley is hoping he can get a rematch to prove that he can beat Usman and he just didn’t show up that night.

“When you watch the Kamaru Usman fight, I don’t have to watch it. It was a silhouette of Tyron in the Octagon or something happened when I jumped up and stomped down, I think my spirit left my body,” Woodley said during a Q&A with fans in Vancouver (h/t MMA Fighting). “I can give him credit for what he did. He stayed focused, he executed but we all know that wasn’t Tyron Woodley.

“So I don’t have to go back and watch the film and say the chain wrestling [affected me]. I’m a Division I All-American [wrestler], not Division II. I’m not knocking that but it’s a way different level. When you think about striking, when you think about my resume, it’s not that he did something so great that I couldn’t keep up with. It’s just the fact that it’s one of those nights when you walk out there, everything feels perfect and you get close to your opponent and the battery pack is snatched out of your back. That’s really what I felt like.”

Tyron Woodley continued to talk about the fight and believes he is a terrible matchup for Kamaru Usman. He even went on to say he is a ‘nightmare’ for him.

“Kamaru Usman skill set wise on paper, I’m a nightmare for him every day of the week,” Woodley said. “What happened in the Octagon is one, I never make excuses. I walked into four world title fights with the weight of the world on my back, personal issues, injuries. I never healed from the injury before. But you guys never hear about that but the second I go out there and I fight and I’m not the characteristic Tyron Woodley that you see. Immediately it’s music that’s distracting me. It’s movies that’s distracting me.

“I’ve been doing this same thing forever, you guys just never hear about it.”
