UFC president Dana White claims that a showdown with Kamaru Usman wasn’t the only bout Colby Covington was offered.

White addressed the road leading up to booking Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 244 on Nov. 2. Initially, Usman was scheduled to defend his UFC welterweight title against Covington. Negotiations fell apart with “Chaos.”

White Claims Covington Turned Down Usman/Woodley

During a UFC 244 press conference, White told reporter Phoenix Carnevale that Covington turned down the bout with Usman and even refused to fight Tyron Woodley when offered (via ESPN).

“Colby Covington can say whatever he wants. We make fights for a living, that’s what we do. We go after guys and say, ‘This is next, this is the date, do you want the fight?’ And obviously, he wanted more money to fight Usman. We went back and forth. This is the second time he’s done it. He had a [title] fight in Dallas [last year], too. So, we said if you don’t want to fight Usman, then we’ll give you Tyron Woodley. He turned down Tyron Woodley, too. You either want to fight or you don’t. When Colby Covington wants to fight, he’ll let us know.”

During a recent appearance on BJPENN Radio, Covington said the UFC does “slave negotiations.”

“That’s how UFC does business, they do the bully tactics,” he said. “They do the slave labor negotiations. It’s sick man. They don’t want to pay any of the fighters because they want everybody to be poor, so they keep back coming back and fighting all the time, and fighting six times a year.”

Tyron Woodley wants the challenge of facing Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Woodley made headlines recently when he called the UFC lightweight champion out on TMZ. His reasoning was that “The Eagle” is a once in a lifetime fighter and one he was interested in testing his skills against.

Any potential fight would have to be at a catchweight — likely at 165 pounds — but Woodley is fine with that as he needs to be motivated by a challenge:

“He’s a beast, and I just think right now, in my life, in my career, I need the impossible,” Woodley said at a fan Q&A this past Friday (via MMA Junkie). “I need the stuff that nobody can do, I need the thing that’s going to motivate me beyond measure, and I think that he provides that.

Obviously I could never make 155 (pounds), so it would have to be something at a catchweight. It would have to be something that he would be interested in. He’s on the top of the world right now. I may not be an option for him, so it’s more out of respect of what he can do.”

Woodley earlier stated he had the best takedown defense in UFC history — although that’s no longer the case following the Kamaru Usman fight — and because of his wrestling credentials, he is eager to see what would happen if they fought.

That is even more so after the way Nurmagomedov defeated Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 earlier this month:

“I know Dustin,” Woodley added. “Dustin has sparred with middleweights (and) light heavyweights, and for (Nurmagomedov) to go out there and put on a performance like that against Dustin, I’ve got to see what it feels like.”

Tyron Woodley has explained why a catchweight bout with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov interests him. Woodley is a former UFC welterweight champion. He’s even entertained the idea of moving up to middleweight when Michael Bisping was the 185-pound title holder. Still, “The Chosen One” is intrigued by a potential match-up with Nurmagomedov. Tyron Woodley is approaching his return to the Octagon. “The Chosen One” claims he’ll fight before the year is up as he strives to regain the welterweight title he once held.

Woodley comes off a unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman earlier this year in which he dropped the 170-pound title. He’s kept busy with his music and entertainment career on the side, but still has the desire to be the best mixed martial artist in the world. Speaking at a fan Q&A in Canada, Woodley laid out his plans for a return.

He’s hoping for fights with Colby Covington, a rematch – and trilogy – with Usman, before jumping up to middleweight. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“Obviously it’s going to be a lot of emotion in the Colby Covington fight. It’s going to be a lot of emotion in the (Kamaru) Usman fight,” Woodley said. “But outside of those two fights in that division, those are the ones that excite me the most, and after I get my belt and defend, if I fight Usman and beat him, I got to give him the rubber match.

“I can’t just say, ‘Nah-nah-nah, you can’t get me.’ I’ve got to give him a chance to get back out there and prove it. Then fighting Colby, obviously. Then I’m looking at 185 (pounds) after that.”

At this point in his career, Woodley is looking for fights that excite him. He’s still confused as to why he never received an immediate rematch for the title, but is ready to run through whoever necessary to get back to the championship.

“I just want fights that excite me,” Woodley said. “I want fights that are going to get me back to the title if it’s not an immediate rematch. When you look at a lot of fighters that are in similar situations as me, that had never defended, they were given instant rematches.

“And you’ve got to recognize that my deck of cards is my deck of cards. It’s not theirs. So whatever reason that fight wasn’t immediately rematched, I can’t cry over spilled milk. I’ve got to go out there and do what it takes for me to get back to the belt.”

What do you think about Woodley’s aspirations to fight Usman, Covington, and jump up to middleweight?

Dillon Danis has been trash talking seemingly everyone in the UFC.

Yet, this past weekend, he said he has hit rock bottom as he attended a Tyron Woodley concert.

“you know you hit rock bottom when you go to a @TWooodley concert,” he wrote on Twitter.

Tyron Woodley, of course, has released several songs and has spent time on his music career. He has recorded songs with Wiz Khalifa and others. Yet, Dillon Danis is still not impressed with his music.

But, this could very well be just Dillon Danis just being himself. He trash talks seemingly everyone. He has taken shots at likes of Ben Askren, Jon Jones, and even YouTube stars in Logan and Jake Paul.

Many fighters have responded to him, even Jones after Dillon Danis said he offered to do a grappling match with him.

“I offered to do a grappling match with him,” Danis said on an episode Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “If we fought in MMA, I feel like, from his stance and how tall he is, if I did an Imanari roll I would take his leg home with me.

“Why not? I come from jiu-jitsu where we fight the biggest guys,” he added when asked why he believed he could overcome the size disadvantage. “I’ve fought guys that are like 300 pounds in jiujitsu. You have to do it. I fought seven of them in the same day. So I don’t know man, I’m a different kind of martial artist. I’ve been doing this since I was a kid, training with anybody and anywhere.”

Jones then responded with the following:

“Dude, nothing is going on with Dillon Danis,” Jones said. “I think he knows I’m the type of guy to respond and it’s getting his following up. So, I think that’s what’s going on with him. At the end of the day, I don’t come out and talk trash about these guys. That just came out of nowhere. I feel like I’ve been in this sport for over 10 years now, some guys just like to bring up my name because it looks cool.”

“I wouldn’t grapple him but I’d put my foot in his mouth,” he later added.

What do you make of Dillon Danis’ attending a Tyron Woodley concert?

Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is calling for a fight with lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov recently defended his title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 last week. Many now believe his next opponent should be Tony Ferguson who is on a 12-fight winning streak.

Should he come away with the win there, there is a possibility of him moving up to welterweight to build his legacy even further with a potential second title. That would be music to Woodley’s ears as he believes he has what it takes to defeat a “once in a lifetime” fighter like Nurmagomedov:

“I want to fight Khabib,” he said on TMZ. “I got the best takedown defense in the history of the sport. He’s dope, man. There’s not too many guys around like that. He’s a once in a lifetime. I’m a fan of his.

Of course, Woodley wants to win his title back from Kamaru Usman first. And once he does, he’s even offering “The Eagle” a catchweight bout rather than moving all the way up to 170:

“You know the good thing about it is he got one or two more fights in that division that make sense for him,” Woodley added. “He struggles to make 155. I got to get my belt back for this fight to make sense. …He won’t even have to come up. We can do it at a catchweight, 165. I barely can make it but for the right bag…”

Who do you think wins between Nurmagomedov and Woodley? Are you interested in seeing it?
