Former UFC champ Conor McGregor is a big fan of heavyweight boxing star Tyson Fury.

“The Notorious” recently took to Twitter to praise “The Gypsy King’s” work on the pads ahead of his fight this weekend. After some words of praise, McGregor dubbed Fury the “number one heavyweight boxer of this era”:

“This is what fully committed pad work looks like. Amazing! Welcome to The Mac Life “Gypsy King” Tyson Fury! Leading the game from all angles. Enjoy Sin city my man we are not here for a long time, we are here for a good time. Atta boy Tyson, The number 1 HW boxer of this era.”

Fury makes his return to the ring Saturday night (June 15, 2019) against Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be the first of Fury’s new multi-fight deal with ESPN. Should he emerge victorious, he’s expected to rematch Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title in early 2020.

However, Wilder will have to win his upcoming fight against Luis Ortiz, which will be a rematch against the man who came the closest to finishing “The Bronze Bomber” inside the ring.

McGregor hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since October of last year when he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Irishman is hoping to land a rematch with the lightweight champion soon, but will likely need to pick up a preliminary win before doing so.

Bob Arum: Tyson Fury Fight Will Get More ESPN+ Subscribers Than UFC

Top Rank Boxing promoter Bob Arum expects a lot of new subscribers on ESPN+ for Tyson Fury’s fight against Tom Schwarz.

Fury returns to action on June 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when he takes on the undefeated German prospect in a heavyweight match-up. It will be the Briton’s debut fight on ESPN+ since signing a lucrative deal with the sports network in February. ESPN+ was already bolstered with the addition of the UFC earlier this year.

UFC on ESPN+ 1, which featured a flyweight title fight between Henry Cejudo and TJ Dillashaw earlier this year, generated 568,000 new subscribers for the platform on the weekend of the event. But Arum, who has had a tumultuous relationship with the UFC, expects Fury to generate even more new subscribers:

“This weekend’s event is very important for boxing,” Arum said (via BoxingScene). “Look, even though the UFC are cousins of ours at ESPN, they are still competition. They’ve done extraordinarily well and ESPN had the announcement of their big subscription boost right out of the gate. With Tyson Fury coming up on June 15, we’re gonna get more new subscribers than they did with their debut in January.”

Arum Heaps Praise On Fury

It would truly be something if Fury is able to generate even more subscribers than the UFC did back in January. But such is the confidence in him from Arum, who believes the Top Rank/ESPN banner has another special fighter under its stable:

“I’ve had some guys who were not shy, fighters such as Muhammad Ali and George Foreman,” Arum added. “(Fury) is right up with there with those two guys. People can relate to him. I’ve never seen an outpouring of fans like we have right now who root for Tyson Fury.

“People look at the heavyweight division. We have great fighters on ESPN – two of the best in Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford and Vasyl Lomachenko. He has the ability to capture the imagination. That’s what we hope to accomplish with him. This guy is a force in and of himself in and out of the ring.”

Earlier tonight (Sat. June 1, 2019) Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the boxing world in New York.

The Mexican-American knockout artist handed Anthony Joshua his first career loss, taking the unified heavyweight title home in the process. This throws a huge wrench into Joshua’s plans to face the likes of Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in the future. Both Wilder and Fury have offered their reactions to the upset.

Fury actually sent out a heartfelt message to his fellow countryman, offering him some words of advise:

“We have our back and Forth’s but @anthonyfjoshua changed his stars through life. heavyweight boxing, these things happen, rest up, recover, regroup and come again”

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder’s response, however, was much different. Wilder claimed Joshua never was a “true champion,” saying his career was built off lies and contradictions:

“He wasn’t a true champion. His whole career was consisted of lies, contradictions and gifts. Facts and now we know who was running from who!!!!”

Now, Joshua will most likely move on to rematch Ruiz later this year. Should the Englishman avenge his defeat and regain the titles, perhaps a fight against Wilder or Fury will still be on the table. Of course, it’ll be nowhere near as big as it could’ve been when Joshua was undefeated.

However, Ruiz Jr. is the champion and proved tonight he shouldn’t be overlooked. The heavyweight division moving forward will be very interesting to keep an eye on, indeed.

One of the desired ferris wheel of fights boxing fans want to see from the heavyweight division seems to be official.

Earlier today (Fri. May 31, 2019) it was announced by WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder that a deal has been agreed to for “The Bronze Bomber” to rematch Tyson Fury in early 2020. The announcement was subsequently confirmed by ESPN:

“Well, As I always say I’m the realest Champion in the business and as I’ve mentioned before I must handle all my Controversial Fights ASAP!! Luis Ortiz is first then Tyson Fury.

“By no means I’m I looking pass Ortiz, He’s a dangerous fighter but  I am looking through him. (Window Shopping) Shid, I’m the best ain’t No guess’N… what other champion Give you what your Miss’N…

“One fell to his Knee, the other on his Back… If you got questions then “We run it back”. All Contracts have been signed already!! it’s officially on!!”

Of course, these plans could be stifled if neither man wins their next fight. Fury will be taking on Tom Schwarz on June 15 on ESPN+ from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Wilder just signed on to rematch Luis Ortiz in September. Should both men win their respective fights, Wilder and Fury will be free to rematch.

The pair initially fought back in December where they fought to a draw. Many believe Fury out-boxed Wilder, who was the only man to score a knockdown in the fight (two). It should be very interesting to see how things play out a second time around.
