James Toney

Former three-weight professional boxing world champion, James Toney has slammed former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, claiming the latter refused to follow through with plans to rematch him in a boxing match – labelling the veteran sport pioneer, a “coward”.

Toney, who ended his professional boxing career back in May 2017 with a knockout win over Mike Sheppard, ended his decorated career boasting a 77-10-3(2) record since his debut back in October 1988.

However, the Michigan native made a brief professional mixed martial arts excursion back in August 2010 at UFC 118, suffering an opening round arm-triangle defeat against the aforenoted former three-time undisputed heavyweight, and two-time light heavyweight champion, Couture.

James Toney suffered a one-sided loss to Randy Couture, eventually submitting to an arm-triangle

Recently, however, Toney has since hit out at Couture – claiming the Washington native eventually baulked at a trip to the professional boxing ring for a rematch, despite initially agreeing to the deal.

“I knew he (Randy Couture) was scared when the fight was made,” James Toney told Murder Master Music Show during a recent interview. “Randy is a great fighter in MMA. We had made a deal that we do one fight (in) MMA and one fight (in) boxing. But of course, after he (Randy Couture) beat me, he retires. What kind of sh*t is that?”

“That’s a coward move, I lost a lot of respect for him” James Toney continued. “He retired a week later. The bad thing about it is I made more money than he did. I offered to pay him more money for the boxing (match) than he made with the fight with me (in mixed martial arts).”

Despite claims from Toney that Couture had retired a week after his arm-triangle loss to the former two-weight UFC champion, Couture would go on to feature against former light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida in April of the following year – suffering an infamous second round front kick knockout to the Brazilian, announcing his retirement from the sport following the fight, aged 47-years-old.

According to James Toney, he and Randy Couture were supposed to battle it out in a boxing match following their MMA bout.

Before and after his MMA debut, James Toney was an incredible boxing sensation. From 1988 to 2017, he competed in 92 professional boxing matches and gained a total of 77 wins.

Toney fought in multiple weight classes and won championships in three of them. But in 2010, it was time for Toney to broaden his horizons and take a shot at another combat sport.

UFC 118 saw Randy Couture and James Toney as the co-main event. Although “Lights Out” lost the match in round 1 via an arm-triangle choke, he still enjoyed the experience and showed appreciation for MMA and the fans.

He may not have remained in the sport like he originally planned, but had fun nonetheless.

Fast forward to 2022 and Toney is not happy with the way things ended between him and Couture. In an interview with Murder Master Music Show, Toney recalls a boxing match agreement with Couture that was supposed to take place after their cage fight.

“I knew he was scared when the fight was made,” Toney said. “Randy is a great fighter in MMA. We had made a deal that we do one fight MMA and one fight boxing. But of course, after he beat me, he retires. What kind of shit is that? That’s a coward move, I lost a lot of respect for him. He retired a week later. The bad thing about it is I made more money than he did. I offered to pay him more money for the boxing than he made with the fight with me.” (h/t MyMMANews)

Unfortunately, boxing and MMA fans never saw the boxing match come to fruition.

The year after their MMA fight, Couture had his final bout against Lyoto Machida and lost via kick to the head in round 2. Meanwhile, Toney continued to make strides in his boxing career until retiring in 2017.

What are your thoughts on James Toney not getting a boxing match with Randy Couture?

Wait, Did James Toney Just Call Rampage Jackson a “Slave to the White Man?”

(Equinso Ocha: Always holding the black man down.)

We could be wrong, because he speaks with a comprehensibility that would give a stenographer an aneurysm, but it definitely sounded like boxing great/MMA not-so-great James Toney just called former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson a “slave” in a recent interview with EsNewsReporting.com. Granted, he also claims that the UFC paid, and is still paying him, a grand total of 1.5 million dollars for his UFC 118 “fight” against Randy Couture, a notion that we know is complete and utter bullshit, but listen to what he had to say when asked about Rampage’s recurring plight with the UFC:

That’s what you get for being a slave to the white man. Don’t be scared. Step up and speak for yourself. That’s why I got paid the million-and-a-half dollars and am still getting paid by the UFC. You know what I’m sayin’? The highest paid fighter ever. You feel me, fat boy? Me. And you been there…what, twenty years and you’re getting paid pennies? While I make millions?

Rampage, if you wanna fight me boy? Come on down to the gym and I’ll give you a job first. …you could be the sparring partner. I pay $50 for a sparring partner.

First off, if you supposedly got paid $1.5 large at UFC 118, why is it that you only pay your sparring partners a measly fifty dollars? Who looks like an asshole now? You, Mr. Toney, that’s who.

Check out the video interview, along with our best attempt at transcribing it to English, after the jump.

Considering Rampage has used almost the exact same language, figuratively speaking, to describe how the UFC has treated him, you can’t imagine he’ll be too offended/pissed off by old Mushmouth’s criticisms, right?

Toney had a lot more to say, go figure, and some of it was almost understandable. We tried our best to transcribe and translate the rest of it, and we’re pretty sure it gave us cancer. So enjoy.

On Rampage’s chances in a sparring session: “Who? Unahgigitkncokedout anddatbelt. Hes goin’ get *suffers small stroke* Comebehimenuniswill….comenuniswill, right? Comenunis…you, YOU, Kele calamari express. You watchen sparrin, UC howa, no how hard I hit. Waswalleybefor.”

[Translation: I predict that if us two gents were to have a rousing back-and-forth duel under Marquess of Queensbury rules, I would emerge victorious, thanks in no small part to my vastly superior striking and brilliant display of handwork. You’ve seen me fight, haven’t you, sir? Cheerio.]

On why his freak show fight with Ken Shamrock never happened: “…the most dangerous girl in the world. They had ‘em atheythey couldn’t afford me ’cause they had money (?) and some bullshit motherfuckin Ivalo Gutier, you know Ivalo?”

[Translation: Ken Shamrock is a ninny little ray of sunshine. The fight promoters could not afford to pay me such a daunting commission because they lacked the proper funding to do so. Also, boxing manager Ivalo Gotzev, whom you are familiar with, correct?]

On what would have happened if they had fought: “yuyuknow he’d get knocked out. You know, he know, you know, why he got scared asitizz. He scared. That mofuka….*indescernable* I don’t play. I mean bidness.”

[You and I both know what would happen, good sir knight. He is rather intimidated by me, that wretch is. I am not here to tussle my tallywacker. I am a professional.]

A quick convincing loss in his MMA debut last August was apparently not enough to deter James Toney from ever fighting MMA again. In fact, in an appearance Monday on The MMA Hour, Toney said is certain he will return to mixed martial arts.

“That’s 100 percent,” Toney told host Ariel Helwani, when asked if he would fight MMA at least once more before he retires.

Randy CoutureThe time has come for former UFC champion Randy Couture to be “rational” about where his fighting career is headed, the 47-year-old MMA veteran told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Despite his three-fight win streak in the UFC, including victories over fellow former champ Mark Coleman and boxer James Toney in 2010, Couture said he doesn’t see another title shot in his future.

“I think that realistically the end of me making runs at the title was a while ago,” said Couture. “I’ve had a great year. I’ve had some great fights. Not too many of them really put me in line to be a number one contender or make a run at the title. To be honest, I just don’t see myself doing that at this stage in my career.”

("This isn’t going to end well, I can feel it.")

Well, the Chael Sonnen PED case just got a whole lot stranger.

According to a report by Sports Illustrated’s Josh Gross, Sonnen indicated to California State Athletic Commission officials who administered his pre-fight drug screening urinalysis that he had taken a banned substance that might show up in the test.

That’s pretty much the nail in the coffin of his UFC career if true, but Chael being Chael will likely blame it on this guy with the Hispanic accent who has been impersonating him in interviews:
