UFC President Dana White announced via Twitter today that UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be defending his title for the second time before year’s end—but not against Rashad Evans.

Former UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida will be facing Jones at UFC 140 on Dec. 10 in Toronto, Ontario.

Machida has been without an opponent since defeating Randy Couture at UFC 129 in April. Many thought that White was punishing the former champion for asking for “Anderson Silva money” when asked to step in for Phil Davis at UFC 133 against Evans.

Now that their apparent rift is mended, Machida is back in the top contender spot. But regaining the title will be a tall order—both figuratively and literally—against the seemingly unstoppable Jones.

Here’s the head-to-toe breakdown for this sure to be exciting championship bout.

It was just announced that Rashad Evans would no longer be fighting Jon Jones due to his hand injury.  This has led to Lyoto Machida becoming the new challenger for Jones at UFC 140.  Jon Jones has been dominant in the UFC, with no one even coming close to beating him (Hamill doesn’t count).  But Lyoto Machida is a different type of fighter whose extremely unorthodox karate style can give his opponents fits.  And even though Jones will be the heavy favorite, here are five reasons why Machida could win this fight.

(Now Lyoto’s the swagger jacker)

Well, we were right in our prediction that the hand injury Rashad Evans incurred in his UFC 133 win over Tito Ortiz in August would likely lead to him being screwed out of another title shot.

UFC president Dana White announced today via Twitter that UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones will defend his title for the second time on December 10 in the main event of UFC 140 at the at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto when he takes on Lyoto Machida.

What’s interesting about the bout is that Machida is 1-2 in his past three fights including back-to-back losses to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. He won his last bout against Randy Couture in the UFC’s first show in Toronto in April, but considering the fact that Couture retired after the bout, you wouldn’t think the win would equate to a title shot.

That’s not to say that the bout won’t be an entertaining one or that “The Dragon’s” unorthodox karate won’t present a challenge for Jones. It should be a great fight and the only person who likely won’t be looking forward to it is Evans, especially if Lyoto wins.

Dana White has just announced on his Twitter account that tickets for UFC 140 in Toronto will go on sale next weekend, and the main event is Jon “Bones” Jones vs. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida.

Rashad Evans has yet to comment on the situation, having had a history of getting stiffed on his title shot. He was all but guaranteed a shot after his win over Tito Ortiz, but he injured his hand in the process.

Lyoto Machida is coming off a knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129. Machida offered to replace Phil Davis in a bout against Evans, but he wanted too much money, so Dana White didn’t add him to the fight.

Instead, Ortiz took the fight and was defeated by Evans, who injured his hand. Evans recently had the pins in his hand removed and is able to start training again in three weeks.

After his bout with Rampage Jackson, Jon Jones had some issues with his feet. It is interesting how quickly Jones is turning around from his injury, while Evans still waits on the sidelines.

With Jones’ fight against Machida now happening on December 10th, Evans won’t get a shot at Jones until at least February or March.

Will Evans choose to wait out the fight again?

Or, will he choose to fight once he is healed to prevent cage rust?

It has just been announced that Rashad Evans will not have the next title shot after all.

UFC President, Dana White tweeted on Thursday morning, saying:

“Alright Toronto!!! Dec 10th UFC 140 tix go on sale next weekend and ur main event is Bones Jones vs Machida!!!”

This fight was completely unexpected, and came out of the blue. But UFC 140 sure is looking like a great card now.

Jon Jones won the light heavyweight belt back in March, when he defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua via third round TKO. He then went on to defend the belt against Rampage Jackson, who he defeated by fourth-round submission.

Lyoto Machida has been out of action since UFC 129, where he jumping front kicked Randy Couture, knocking him out and sending him into retirement.

Prior to that, Machida dropped two straight fights. One via KO to Shogun Rua, and one via split decision to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

This is huge news, as Rashad Evans gets passed over for a title shot once again.

UFC 140 takes place on December 10th in Toronto, Canada.

The main event for UFC 140 is set, with Jon Jones set to defend his light heavyweight title against former champion Lyoto Machida.

UFC President Dana White announced on Twitter that Jones vs. Machida will be the main event for the card, which takes place on Dec. 10 in Toronto.

The decision to give the next shot at the light heavyweight title to Machida comes as a surprise because Rashad Evans has long been declared the No. 1 contender. But Evans, who wore a cast on his hand when he faced off with Jones following Jones’ victory over Rampage Jackson last month, will apparently not be ready to fight in time for Jones’ next title defense.

For Jones, the matchup means he will fight four times in 2011: He beat Ryan Bader in February, Shogun Rua in March and Jackson in September. Fighting this often is rare in the UFC, especially among championship-level fighters, but Jones is apparently ready, and the UFC apparently wants to keep their young star active.

He’ll have an interesting stylistic matchup in Machida, whose striking is unlike anything Jones has ever faced before. Then again, Jones’ strength, speed and reach is unlike anything Machida has ever faced before. This should be a great fight.
