UFC 141: Will Octagon Jitters Kill Alistair Overeem’s Chances of Beating Lesnar?

We’ve heard it a hundred times before, but its significance cannot be overlooked.

Octagon jitters are a real thing, and they have affected numerous fighters making their promotional debut.

Top-level fighters such as Shogun Rua, Jake Shields and Takanori Gomi have all had rough Octagon debuts over the past five years or so, and while some chalk up those performances to injury, age or a variety of other reasons, you can’t count out the effect that stepping into the world’s premier organization has had on fighters in the past.

Later this month former Strikeforce champion and current top-ranked heavyweight Alistair Overeem will step into the UFC for the first time in his career, and while many fans have been looking forward to an exciting bout against Brock Lesnar, they may be disappointed if Overeem is unable to get over the rush that comes with fighting inside the Octagon.

Lesnar is actually a great example of how the dreaded “Octagon jitters” can ruin a UFC debut.

Back at UFC 81, Lesnar came out and started to dominate Frank Mir, but his adrenaline got the best of him and he became sloppy, allowing Mir to lock in a fight ending leg lock early in the bout.

While some fans point to a step up in competition as a better reason as to why these fighters seem to come out flat and underperform in their promotional debut, fighters like Shogun and Lesnar have proven that they were able to come back strong after their initial setbacks.

Overeem is a force of nature, but with his current issues with the athletic commission lingering over his head and the inevitable pressure of stepping into the UFC cage for a massive PPV main event may cause him to put on a weak performance, and Lesnar will end up benefiting from it.

UFC 141 will feature the return of one of the UFC’s biggest draws in Brock Lesnar, the former UFC heavyweight champion.

He will go up against former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in one of the year’s most anticipated bouts on December 30.

It was recently determined that the winner of the bout will face current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, who defeated Cain Velasquez on the first UFC on FOX show.

After a second fight with diverticulitis, Lesnar will return to the cage for the first time in over a year to face Overeem. He was last seen getting pummeled by Velasquez in Oct. 2010.

Overeem will enter the bout with an extensive 35-11 record, including a current 10-fight win streak with victories over Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum and Kazuyuki Fujita.

In the co-main event, lightweight standouts Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone will fight to determine the next top contender in the division.

Blame Canada: Brock Lesnar Charged Thrice in Relation to Hunting Trip

brock hunting
(Hey amigo, don’t forget to bag the stool. I’ll be making salad as a side tonight.)

One minute it’s an emergency NSAC meeting, and now this. Don’t worry folks, the charges facing former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will not affect his December 30th battle with Alistair Overeem at UFC 141, but Lesnar is now a fugitive in a country where sodomy is legal nonetheless. The charges aimed at Brock stem from a recent hunting trip he took to Alberta; I’ll let CJCYFM.com explain:

A recent hunting trip to Alberta has landed former WWE and Ultimate Fighting Champion Brock Lesnar in some trouble.

Fish and Wildlife officers confirmed the international celebrity has been charged with three counts in contravention to the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Act.  The charges came before Medicine Hat Provincial Court Thursday morning and include improper affixation of tags, spoilage of skin and edible flesh and possession of a controlled animal.

Neither Lesnar, nor his co-accused Chad Stryker, appeared in person in court.  Their matter has been put over until January 19th.

Phew. At first, the charges don’t sound that bad. That is, until you consider the fact that the controlled animal in question was a Garthok.

We here at CP have yet to learn the seriousness of these charges, but if Quinton Jackson can go on a literal rampage across Southern California and come away clean, then it’s hard to imagine Lesnar can be in any real trouble here. In fact, according to our Canadian law expert, the worst punishment Lesnar could face would be forced participation in the annual Burn’s Day supper, as is tradition.

But let’s get to the real story here; this is clearly a shallow attempt by our northerly neighbors to spoil our New Years festivities, likely because they blame us for GSP’s injury. And like it’s our fault that he trusts our surgeons more. All I’m saying is, the Baldwin brothers better watch their backs.

Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem Predict Pain in the UFC 141 Extended Video Preview

(Video via MMA Mania)

Brock Lesnar: “He’s in over his head. He doesn’t really understand the beast that he’s gonna enter the Octagon with…I’m gonna defeat Alistair Overeem. That’s the bottom line, and there’s nothing else to say…At the end of the day, he’s gonna get his ass beat…it’s gonna come down to will, and who wants this fight more, and Brock Lesnar wants this fight more than Alistair Overeem.”

Alistair Overeem: “I’m gonna tear this guy apart, piece by piece…I’m gonna beat up Brock Lesnar, and it’s gonna take me no more than two rounds to do that…Brock definitely doesn’t like to get hit. I’m gonna hit him, and I’m gonna hit him as hard as I can. And I’m pretty good at it…I would put my money on a knockout in the first round, but personally I can guarantee a knockout in the second…If you guys think Cain Velasquez hits hard, wait ’til you see what I’m gonna do to him.”

The UFC 141 video trailer also previews the lightweight feature between Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone. It seems there’s already a bit of tension between the two (starting at the 6:53 mark)…

Cerrone: “Really the only personal interaction I’ve had with Nate [was] at the open workout prior to this fight. I walk over to be like, “hey man, what’s going on,” shake his hand…”

Diaz: “Yeah, he shouldn’t have done that. He’s in my bracket, we’re gonna fight each other.”

Cerrone: “…he slaps my hand away, and calls me a punkass and walks off.”

Diaz: “You go your way, I’ll go mine.”

Cerrone: “You wanna talk shit to me, you’re just gonna enrage me and piss me off. So feed my fuckin’ flame, that’s how I say it, let’s go…I’m just as game as you are. You don’t have to be from Stockton to be tough.”

UFC 141 goes down December 30th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

However, there’s plenty for “Cowboy” to worry about. Things like:
