A pivotal lightweight affair is coming to Las Vegas at the end of the year.

Fan favorites Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz will be meeting inside the Octagon in a bout that has “Fight of the Night” written all over it.

MMAJunkie.com has recently confirmed the bout with multiple sources close to the event, UFC 141, which takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on December 30.

The main event of the evening will feature a battle between former heavyweight champions Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar, though Cerrone and Diaz could very well steal the show.

“Cowboy” Cerrone was last seen inside the cage just this past Saturday when he met with perennial contender Dennis Siver on the Spike TV prelims special for UFC 137. Cerrone bested the striking specialist on the feet, knocking the German down early with a head kick. A later barrage of strikes sent Siver to the mat again, where Cerrone settled for the first round rear-naked choke finish, which earned him “Submission of the Night” honors for his efforts.

Diaz recently returned into the thick of the lightweight pack when he took on former Pride champion Takanori Gomi this September. The two heavy hitters met at UFC 135, where The Ultimate Fighter  winner dropped Gomi early with a flurry of strikes. Staggered, Gomi eventually took Diaz to the mat, where the Cesar Gracie protege eventually locked up a fight-ending armbar finish, earning him “Submission of the Night” for his performance.

Both Cerrone and Diaz have a penchant for exciting and aggressive fights and this bout should be no different. The winner of this bout, with an impressive performance, could be primed for a shot at the title. With Frankie Edgar in need of a new challenger, either Diaz or Cerrone would provide the right kind of exciting battle that will captivate some real fan interest.

MMA is growing, whether people choose to accept it or not, and it’s shown for most of 2011 so far. We’ve seen knockouts come forth in stunning fashion, we’ve seen legends take hard shots while other legends gave hard shots, we’ve seen non-traditional submissions win fights, and of course, we’ve seen Jon Jones’ “Bonejitsu”. The current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is 3-0 in 2011 bouts, by the way.

The wild, crazy, insane, and unfathomable have all taken place in 2011, but we still have quite a ways to go before we’re done with the year, and as combat sports fans in some respect, we’re not just leaving it at MMA either—though, an entire section could be dedicated to what’s left in the boxing world in 2011. With all that being said, what exactly can we expect in the last few months of 2011?

Since entering the UFC in February of 1997, Vitor Belfort has been one of the best fighters the organization has seen.

But, it hasn’t always been smooth sailin’ for Belfort, as he’s had his fair share of bumps and bruises along the way.

In 2007, Belfort put on a historical run to the top of the division winning five consecutive fights on way to earning a Middleweight title shot against the world’s greatest fighter, Anderson Silva.

Unfortunately for the “The Phenom” he was knocked out in the very first round and his run came to an end.

Belfort went on to defeat Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133 but now awaits his next opponent.

The following slides display five fights Vitor Belfort could take next.

The landscape of the MMA world changed this week as the Bellator promotion was purchased by its broadcast partner, Viacom.  As part of the deal, the promotion will leave MTV2 for Spike TV in 2013.

Recent UFC featherweight title challenger Kenny Florian has announced that he will not retire despite his third failed attempt at UFC gold.  The catch?  He’ll be returning to the lightweight division.

Also of note, MMA Live host Jon Anik will be leaving ESPN to join the UFC as a member of its broadcast team.
