UFC 146 Results: Roy Nelson Shows Dana White He Doesn’t Need to Slim Down to Win

Dana White has believed for a long time that Roy “Big Country” Nelson would be an absolute force if he were able to get his weight down to 205. But at UFC 146, Nelson showed his boss that he doesn’t need to cut weight to win fights.

The president of the UFC voiced his displeasure with Nelson once again when he said this, as per MMAweekly.com:

“I’m cool with him; I like him. Listen, he’s a tough guy with a ton of heart. He goes in there and he gives it his everything. My thing is I’ve always said to him, I’d love to see you take this thing seriously and rip off some weight,” said White.

“When you’ve got a chin like that and a heart like that, you can’t deny the guy’s got a great chin, a ton of heart and he can knock people out. If he really could get to 205, he’d be a force at 205. He’d be a scary dude. He’s got great wrestling, awesome submissions, great chin, a ton of heart and has knockout power.

Nelson must have listened to White’s “I’d love to see you take this thing seriously…” comment and decided he was going to take his frustrations out on his opponent, Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman.

Nelson and Herman both proceeded with caution in the first round, feeling each other out as they looked for a weak point in one another’s defenses. Unfortunately for Herman, “Big Country” found an opening first and laid the smack down on “Pee-Wee” in the form of an overhand right that immediately dropped him to the canvas.

White’s comments must have hit a nerve with Nelson, as he came into this fight looking like he was in great shape. It wasn’t the overly flabby, jiggly Nelson that we’re accustomed to seeing, but rather the semi-tight, relatively skinny Nelson.

I can just imagine the following Dana White quote playing on repeat in Nelson’s headphones as he trained for this fight:

“Who knows what Roy Nelson could really achieve if he applied himself.”

Talk about a zinger. That one will cut you deep even if you say you don’t care about it.

Nelson has came out and put on quality performances in his last three fights. He scored a TKO over Mirko Filipovic, then suffered a unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum (the fight won Fight of the Night), followed by his knockout of Herman, which was awarded Knockout of the Night at UFC 146.

The UFC now has an interesting dilemma on their hands. We might get to see Nelson fight against Stefan Struve, which will surely be a mind-blowing fight. The two fighters weigh about the same, but Struve is nearly a foot taller, which will give Nelson a problem when it comes to landing his knockout punches while the two are on their feet.

Nelson knocked Struve out less than 40 seconds into the first round of their fight in March of 2010, but Struve is a much different fighter now.

White is right to say that Nelson would be a force at 205 pounds, but I don’t believe that it’s fair to say that he doesn’t take what he does seriously.

You don’t win 17 of 24 fights if you think your job is a joke. And you certainly don’t have the power to come out of the gate, throw one punch and knock out your opponent unless you’ve trained enough to do so.

Nelson has had a rough go at it over the course of his last five fights, losing three of them. Don’t forget that he went the distance in all three, though, losing to Junior dos Santos, Frank Mir and Werdum.

Not many fighters can say that they’ve gone the distance with all three of those guys. Nelson may not look to be in top physical shape, but he certainly is conditioned enough to go three rounds with three of the best heavyweight fighters in the world.

Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller: Did He Ever Stand a Chance in the UFC?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller is without a doubt one of the most popular and entertaining characters in MMA today.

The only problem is his entertainment value has yet to earn him a UFC victory.

Following his UFC 146 loss to CB Dollaway last night, Miller was involved in a backstage incident that led to him being cut from the UFC.

It’s no surprise that Miller was cut from the company, though.

In his return fight to the UFC against Michael Bisping, Miller looked gassed and sloppy.

Miller did try to strike with Dollaway, but once the fight got to the ground, he did not have an answer.

Both fights were bad for Miller. His most memorable moment from either one may have been when he gave Dollaway a noogie in the middle of the fight.

Miller has been known for this type of crazy antics mid-fight.

But his two most recent UFC fights have proven that unless you’re a Diaz brother or clearly have control of the fight, the Octagon is no place for those types of actions.

Miller has always been an interesting character, but as a fighter this may be the worst that Miller has looked in his career.

Whenever he’s been put on his back, he has not had an answer for his opponents.

Miller may still have potential to be a great fighter, but he may also be a guy who just is not cut out for the UFC.

Entertainment value alone can’t get you anywhere if you don’t produce wins.

And if you don’t play the rules backstage, Dana White won’t be afraid to cut you, no matter how good or popular you are.

In case you missed it, Cain Velasquez performed remarkably at UFC 146.

The former UFC Heavyweight Champion took Antonio Silva down in the early moments of their fight and from there it was an utter mugging.

Silva was unable to contend with Velasquez’ ground-and-pound, and the result was one of the bloodiest beatings we’ve ever seen in the cage.

It was a nearly flawless performance from the Mexican-American, who needed a big win to bounce back from his recent loss to Junior dos Santos, but was it the best of his career?

Keep reading to find out, as we rank each of Velasquez’ UFC fights…

UFC 146 Results: Why Cain Velasquez Deserves a Rematch with Junior dos Santos

At UFC 146, former UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez made a huge statement when he defeated Antonio “Big Foot” Silva by TKO.

Velasquez, who lost the heavyweight title to Junior dos Santos in his last bout, was looking to prove to the world that the loss was a fluke.

While Velasquez has had many knockout victories in the past, none have looked as violent as the one against Silva.

After taking Silva down in the opening seconds of the bout, Velasquez put on a ground-and-pound clinic on Silva, leaving him a bloody mess.

With the win, there’s a strong possibility that Velasquez will get a rematch with Dos Santos.

Although the win against Silva was a brutal, one-sided affair, some people may believe that Velasquez is still one fight away from a rematch with Dos Santos.

Some may even believe that because their first bout only lasted 64 seconds, there is no way that Velasquez deserves a rematch this soon.

But who else stands as strong of a threat to Dos Santos?

Dos Santos has already defeated the likes of Frabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve.

Add Frank Mir to the list, and that takes away another top heavyweight.

Dos Santos has yet to meet Mark Hunt. Although Hunt is riding a three-fight winning streak and has great knockout power, the result could be the same as Dos Santos’ wins against Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin.

Dos Santos has also not faced Alistair Overeem. But with the former Strikeforce champ likely out the remainder of the year thanks to suspension, the UFC will be looking to fill the No. 1 contender’s spot sooner than later.

Another fighter that Dos Santos could face is the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix winner and Velasquez’s training partner, Daniel Cormier.

Cormier is a perfect 10-0 in his MMA career.

But after suffering a broken hand and being told he will fight once more in Strikeforce, and with Dana White wanting him to move down to light heavyweight, it’s unlikely that he will face Dos Santos anytime soon.

There may not be another heavyweight on the level that Dos Santos and Velasquez are on.

The problem that you have with two great fighters in the same weight class, though, is it’s easy for one to look mediocre against the other.

Velasquez proved that he was on another level last night, and he would love the chance to prove that he simply got caught in the first fight against Dos Santos.

Because of the bloody beat-down of Silva and being ahead of many other contenders, Velasquez may very well be on his way to a rematch with Dos Santos.

On Saturday night, Junior dos Santos squared off against Frank Mir for the heavyweight title, and the fight went as many expected, with dos Santos scoring a TKO victory over the former champion.

In the co-main event, Cain Velasquez faced off against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, in a bout with major title implications. Velasquez emerged the winner and put himself in line for a shot at the heavyweight belt.

In addition to those fights, there were several cards between this one and the last time I’d done a pound-for-pound ranking, so let’s take a look at what the list looks like now.

Alistair Overeem is not included due to his suspension.
