Late Thursday night, Bleacher Report learned from UFC officials that Jon Anik would be stepping up and filling in for Mike Goldberg for the UFC 155 broadcast. Details were spotty at the time but it was known that it was a last minute decision.

Friday afternoon, it was confirmed to MMAJunkie.com that Goldberg would be sidelined due to illness.

Goldberg has long been a staple for UFC broadcasts along side his partner Joe Rogan. He’s the Voice of the UFC and has been a member of the promotion’s announcement team since 1997.

Goldberg’s role on UFC broadcasts has been two-fold. He’s served as the play-by-play announcer as well as mentioning the various upcoming UFC events.

Anik has been a member of the UFC’s “B-Team”, working the Fuel TV and FX cards with former-UFC fighter, Kenny Florian. Most praised the chemistry that he shared with his partner, building a rapport in a short period of time.

Besides his role with Florian, Anik also is the host of “The Ultimate Insider” on Fuel TV which airs every Tuesday evening following “UFC Tonight”.

It will be interesting to see how Anik handles commentary with Rogan as the two haven’t worked together in the past.

We wish Mike Goldberg a speedy recovery.

***Update***

According to a tweet from John Morgan, as per UFC President Dana White, Mike Goldberg is not ill but will be “taking time off” with no return date set.

UFC 155: Which Fighter Has the Most to Lose?

UFC 155 is only a matter of hours away and while the anticipation builds for fans, the fighters will likely find a night of restless sleep ahead of them. One fighter in particular has a lot on the line and could see his UFC future become very complicated if he’s not victorious.

Cain Velasquez will be challenging for the UFC heavyweight title in UFC 155’s main event. He faces a familiar foe in champion Junior dos Santos. The Brazilian has already defeated Velasquez once: a 64-second KO in the first ever UFC event on Fox television.

Although Velasquez claimed a knee injury forced him and his coaches to use a new strategy, it was a clear victory for JDS. A convincing victory for dos Santos could be in the cards for UFC 155’s finale.

If Velasquez loses it likely won’t be via controversial decision or because someone “laid and prayed” on him all night. No, as with the majority of heavyweight bouts, the end will come swiftly and violently.

Should Velasquez lose twice to dos Santos it would put the former champion at a crossroad junction in his career. That would make it two convincing defeats at the hands of the champion and so long as dos Santos has the belt, the UFC would be hard pressed to put together a rubber match.

Fans already believe Velasquez could make 205 pounds due to not being a chiseled freak like some of his heavyweight counterparts but I don’t believe that’s an option for him. Velasquez has always been a heavyweight and, despite not having a 12-pack, is a very solid 230-240 pounds.

Moving to light heavyweight would also eliminate Velasquez’s greatest advantage. Although Velasquez possesses great wrestling and a solid kickboxing game, it is his conditioning that allows the AKA fighter to push a relentless pace. It’s a pace very few heavyweights can keep up with but wouldn’t be an issue for the much smaller light heavyweights.

Velasquez needs to win this fight or at the very least make it a close defeat to stay relevant in heavyweight division. Matchups make fights and Velasquez is a terrible matchup for anyone in the division outside of JDS. The champion has great takedown defense and perhaps hits the hardest of any UFC fighter in history.

Without something to cling to like a “I just got caught” or “I was winning until..” type line, Velasquez could see his UFC title dreams go down the drain with a JDS knockout.

UFC 155: Is It Time to Buy into Alan Belcher as a True Title Contender?

Alan Belcher is arguably one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC today. He is the winner of four straight fights, which have all been finishes.

Belcher is coming into his own and is finally back on track after he needed to have emergency eye surgery to save the vision in his right eye.

He returned from the surgery to score a verbal submission victory over Canadian Jason MacDonald.

His latest win came against heel hook master Rousimar Palhares. He not only went on the ground with Palhares, but controlled and dominated him. He then finished him with a technical knockout, courtesy of punches and elbows.

Many feel that Belcher should be riding a five-fight winning streak because he was robbed of a victory against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100.

Belcher has high level skills. He holds black belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Tae-kwon-do and Duke Roufus kickboxing. He also owns brown belts in Judo and Hayastan grappling.

Belcher is 28, and is coming into his fighting prime. He wants to earn himself a title shot by fighting the elite middleweights of the UFC. At UFC 155, he will be facing the man who defeated him in his UFC debut.

Yushin Okami is a big, strong, middleweight with excellent wrestling skills. Belcher‘s game plan should be to keep the fight on the feet, use his advanced striking and prevent any takedowns that Okami might try.

If Belcher wins this fight, he takes a big step in his quest for a title shot. He is middleweight elite, and with a big win at UFC 155, he will prove to everyone that he is ready for the next step.

Joe Lauzon’s UFC 155 Video Blog; Parts 1, 2 & 3

(Video courtesy of Joe Lauzon’s Youtube page)

UFC lightweight “Baby Joe” Lauzon, as MMA insiders know him, is one day away from the biggest fight of his career at UFC 155 but he’s still keeping fans plugged into his life and training camp with the latest installment of his video blogs. The world’s toughest nerd has released two vlogs thus far and will no doubt be releasing more after today’s weigh ins and tomorrow’s actual fight night.

For now, you can check out Lauzon on the last sparring day of his training camp, how he spent Christmas, his arrival to Las Vegas earlier this week and his final days of prep for the fight against Jim Miller. Also, “meet” Joe’s great grand father, father and camera-shy fiance and hear him talk about the time he crapped his pants. There may or may not also be a bit of head shaving.

That last part probably dissuaded you from watching. But if not, you’ll get access to one of the most fan-friendly and involved fighters in the UFC. Part three is above, parts one and two are after the jump.

Cain Velasquez Feels Betrayed by Person Who Released Video of Knee Injury

Cain Velasquez isn’t happy about the video release of his knee injury leading up to his UFC title defense against Junior dos Santos at UFC on Fox.

According to Velasquez’s camp, he injured his knee prior to the dos Santos bout but opted to fight anyway.

Things took an even more dramatic turn when an actual video was uploaded on YouTube of the injury occurring during a training session.

Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com caught up with the former heavyweight champ to get his take on the situation.

There was a couple of film crews in there filming, and they didn’t do it before the [first fight], but they’ve had it in their possession, so they just decided to do it before this fight.

I have no idea why, and I texted a person and said, ‘Hey, it’s not cool. You should’ve let me know if it was okay with me to do that.’ It makes me seem like I’m crying about what happened before that fight, when it’s just not me.

Velasquez has shown nothing but class following his first round knockout loss to dos Santos.

When asked about the injury, he typically deflects questions and credits dos Santos for being the better fighter that night. It would make little sense for him to support releasing a video of an injury that occurred a year ago.

While the video is still on YouTube, it has been made private and is no longer available to the general public. Some are questioning whether Dethrone, Velasquez’s former sponsor, released the video in an attempt to get back at the heavyweight star for signing with Affliction.

According to Velasquez, he still has a great relationship with Dethrone, and he doesn’t believe him signing with a different brand was the reason the video hit the web.

The owner of Dethrone, I’m good friends with him still. We still have done stuff after I’ve signed with Affliction. So, I have no idea. For the person that did send it out, [I feel betrayed], and let him know that.

According to the video, Velasquez fought dos Santos with a torn ACL.

If true, the injury was apparently more significant than Velasquez ever let on, and if the bout wasn’t the UFC on Fox headliner, there is a good chance he would’ve withdrawn from the fight.

Velasquez won’t make excuses, but he does admit things may have been different if he wasn’t headlining in the UFC’s first ever primetime event.

You never know. It was [that serious], but you know, just being a fighter, you’re always confident in what you have done, so when the opportunity comes, you want to go out there and fight.

Velasquez is set to face dos Santos in a rematch for the heavyweight title at UFC 155 on Saturday night.

Dethrone has yet to make any comments regarding the video.
