And Now He’s Fired: Chael Sonnen Axed by FOX For Being a No Good, Steroid-Using Double Cheater

(Yep, we’re sticking to our *guns* with this photo. BA-DUM-TSH!)

How about some actual news for a change?

On the subject of Chael Sonnen‘s second straight drug test failure, I believe Old Dad summed it up best when he said that the American Gangster had a “cheater’s dream cocktail” flowing through his veins. And indeed, Sonnen tested positive for not trace amounts of HGH, EPO, WWE, TRL, HSN, and BET when retested, which made his previous failed drug test prior to UFC 175 all the harder to swallow.

It’s important to note that Sonnen’s second test was administered before the results of his first test were made public, meaning that he was still technically competing while loaded to gills with a veritable pharmacy heading into UFC 175. Following his all but forced retirement shortly thereafter, the question quickly became not where Sonnen’s fighting career was headed, but if the UFC/FOX would continue to employ a multiple time steroid cheat simply because he was charismatic in front of a camera. It would send a hell of a mixed message to the rest of their fighters in their roster, that’s for sure.

Well today brings an answer, and that answer is “Eff no.”(via a UFC-FOX press release sent out this morning):

The UFC and FOX Sports organizations announced today the termination of their respective broadcasting services agreements with analyst Chael Sonnen. This decision comes in light of Sonnen failing a second test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission for banned substances in June. Sonnen was previously under temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing an initial test conducted in May.

I guess this means Sonnen won’t be given the opportunity to defend himself via a laughably rushed interview on America’s Pregame, then?

Honestly, this is an unfortunate, if fitting end to Sonnen’s professional career. Controversy has followed “The American Gangster” both inside and outside the cage since he first popped onto our radar back in his WEC days, and mainly as a result of his own damn arrogance. Despite being able to talk his way into fight after fight, Sonnen’s reputation as a cheater will undoubtedly be the one thing he will never be able to talk his way out of. The irony is almost poetic.

But fret not, grappling aficionados, Sonnen will still be competing at Metamoris 4 in his much talked about match with Andre Galvao despite his recent drug issues, so sayeth the promotion’s official Twitter account:

You hear that, Chael? If there was ever a time to start injecting PCP into your eyeballs to gain a competitive edge, it’s now.

Ronda Rousey is back in action, and this time the champion takes on No. 2-ranked contender Alexis Davis in the UFC 175 co-main event.

Rousey continued her undefeated career by destroying fellow Olympic medalist Sara McMann in just 66 seconds at UFC 170. She returns for her second trip to the Octagon in 2014 for her fourth title defense.

Davis has been selected to stand opposite Rousey because No. 1-ranked contender Cat Zingano is still on the shelf. Davis has five consecutive victories to her credit, with three of those coming inside the UFC’s cage. Now she gets the chance to shock the world.

Rousey will face her second-ever jiu-jitsu black belt in this fight, but will it be different from the first? Can Davis take home gold and deliver a seismic shock to the division? We will find out this Saturday.

Let’s begin the breakdown of the women’s bantamweight championship tilt.

This weekend, the UFC celebrates the biggest fight week of the year, with UFC 175 being the main attraction of the MMA world. Headlined by two title fights and numerous other star-filled bouts, UFC 175 promises to be a must-see event with big implications.

Lyoto Machida: A Win over Chris Weidman Would Forever Cement His Legacy (Video)

At UFC 175, No. 3 middleweight contender Lyoto Machida will attempt to strip the championship title away from the division’s reigning champion, Chris Weidman. With the win, the Brazilian would set himself up to become the third mixed martial artist in UFC history to acquire a belt from two separate divisions. However, Machida’s opportunity to wrest the title away from Weidman does not come without its own set of challenges.

Weidman is a NCAA Division I All-American wrestler who has transitioned well into the world of MMA. He is currently undefeated and is a well-rounded fighter. Five of his 11 wins have come by knockout. Some of his victims include Mark Munoz, Uriah Hall and the man who many believe to be the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Anderson Silva.

However, heading into UFC 175, Machida isn’t greatly concerned with Weidman’s accolades. According to Dave Dolye of MMA Fighting, the Brazilian stated:

Chris Weidman is a tough guy, he’s well rounded. He’s known for being a wrestler, he’s very good on the ground, he can knock people out standing up. But I’m not too worried about Chris Weidman‘s strong points. I’m focused on what I do well and that’s what I’ll focus on when I’m in the Octagon.

Machida, who now finds himself reinvigorated and undefeated at middleweight, is a former light heavyweight champion himself. He sports a respectable 21-4 record, and is known for outpointing his foes by employing tremendous footwork and an elusive fighting style to secure many of his wins. In fact, due to the latter, 11 of the former champion’s victories have come by way of decision.

Nevertheless, the great counter striker that is Machida has knocked out a barrage of top-level fighters as well. They include, but are not limited to Mark Munoz, Ryan Bader, Thiago Silva and three former world champions in Randy Couture, Rashad Evans and Rich Franklin.

Even though Machida is faced with the opportunity to become the third fighter in the UFC’s history to attain a championship title from two different weight classes (Randy Couture and B.J. Penn are the other two), the Dragon is currently more focused on his victory this Saturday night. In an interview with Bas Rutten on Inside MMAMachida stated:

I just put my focus on my fight, on my technique. For sure, I want to be the third guy with two belts in different class [sic], but my focus is on different things now…

…I can beat him (Weidman) 100 percent.

On July 5, Machida will attempt to become immortalized in the annals of mixed martial arts history by defeating Weidman and securing his second championship title. A victory would not only leave him hall-of-fame bound, it would all but solidify him as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

Don Frye’s UFC 175 “Predator Predictions” Features the Glorious Return of His Facial Hair, Rampant Sexism

(*blows bubbles with sippy straw*)

Do you guys remember where you were when you found out that Don Frye had shaved his legendary mustache? I do. I was on the toilet, weeping into my paperback copy of The Fault in Our Stars while blaring Paula Cole’s “Where Have All the Cowboy’s Gone?” to drown out the sound of my cries, as has become my standard Sunday morning ritual. It was with tear filled eyes that I opened up CagePotato to see in what fashion Saccaro had managed to shit on the previous night’s UFC event when I was instead greeted by the horrific image of a plain-lippy Don Frye. There he was, the most rugged man to ever walk the face of the earth, with his upper lip just exposed for everyone to see. Like some kind of broad.

The paramedics told me I had lost nearly a quart of blood by the time they kicked my door down.

It was a traumatic day to say the least, but in any case, I’m glad to see that Frye had the good sense to grow his stache back out for his UFC 175 edition of “Predator’s Picks,” which I’ve kindly thrown after the jump for you.

It was a traumatic day to say the least, but in any case, I’m glad to see that Frye had the good sense to grow his stache back out for his UFC 175 edition of “Predator’s Picks.” Not only that, but he’s managed to secure himself a sponsor, ApplauseStore.com, which sells whatever the f*ck television tickets are supposed to be. It’s no Priceline.com, but good on him.

Watching Frye refer to Marcus Brimage’s 67% decision ratio as “disgusting” while ordering some bimbo in Daisy Dukes to get him more whiskey is all it took to restore my faith in the two-time UFC champion from back when men were men, and it’s all it should take for you to do the same. His declaration that he’d rather “jump a tall fence and catch his scrotum on a nail” than watch Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis, however, might send your respect for him plummeting right back to Earth. But have you even seen the odds for that noise? Pssshhh…

Check out Frye’s “Predator’s Picks” for UFC 175 above, then be sure to tweet at me how much you hated it with the hashtag #WeekofDanga.
