Just over two weeks ahead of her first-ever UFC title defense against Amanda Nunes on the main card of July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 event from Las Vegas, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate knows there are some absolutely huge fights awaiting her if she can get past “The Lioness.”

She can’t look past the fast-starting (and oftentimes, fading) challenger, but it’d be impossible to not eye say, a trilogy bout against former champ Ronda Rousey or a huge superfight of sorts versus Invicta FC featherweight champ Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino, who just made her UFC debut in May. Speaking during a media luncheon in Hollywood, California, today (via MMA Fighting), ‘Cupcake’ expressed her obvious excitement of fighting the dominant ‘Cyborg’:

“I think it would be really cool to fight Cyborg, honestly,” Tate said. “Like to really see what it’s like to be in there with someone with her power. … I’ll be the first to admit, physically I think I would be at a disadvantage, but I think that I can be the one to prove that I have the heart, the durability, the determination and the will power — and technique — to overcome that kind of challenge. And that intrigues me. That would be very rewarding to me.”

Tate had previously teased a move up to 140 pounds in order to fight ‘Cyborg,’ and Justino actually made that weight for his first UFC bout, a UFC 198 win over Leslie Smith. But ‘Cupcake’ finally received a much-deserved title shot against then-champion Holly Holm at March’s UFC 196, and capitalized by securing an emphatic come-from-behind submission to rip the belt from ‘The Preacher’s Daughter.’

That obviously complicated things, so Tate revealed that while her opinion on the matter hasn’t necessarily changed, she’s not sure if she can galavant between weight classes as featherweight champ Conor McGregor has seemingly been doing:

“It hasn’t changed, but the thing is, is I don’t know if I can not fight for the belt while I’m the champion,” Tate said. “I don’t know how that works. I’m not Conor McGregor. He has like his own set of rules. I’m not really sure. I wouldn’t be opposed to it. But I think it would be better if we did make it a title fight. At some point if that comes down and it’s allowed, like of course.”

Weight always seems to be the issue with any top female fighter facing ‘Cyborg,’ whose long-rumored feud with Rousey turned out to be only rumors when ‘Rowdy’ said she’d have to make bantamweight and Justino ultimately said it was too much. But she did hit 139 on the scales prior to her win over Smith in her native Curitiba, Brazil, so Tate believes that while ‘Cyborg’ is obviously a huge competitor, she can make the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds – even if it is tough – nonetheless:

“I think she can make 135 pounds, but yeah, she’s a very big girl,” Tate said. “She’s naturally big and I’m sure that it would be really a difficult cut for her. She’d have to lose muscle. She wouldn’t just be able to lose the water weight. She’d have to come down.”

A Tate-Cyborg tilt for the belt would be a massive spectacle, yet the UFC may want to book ‘Cupcake’ against Rousey, Holm, or even the winner of UFC 200’s Julianna Pena vs. Cat Zingano match-up first, and with ‘Cyborg’s’ UFC future uncertain as of now, the belt could be around another woman’s waist when the chance to book it even legitimately arose.

Then again, it could just be the biggest fight to make in women’s MMA for later this year if Rousey ends up not returning until next year. After nearly retiring with her position in the division up in the air only 18 months ago, the future is all of the sudden bright for Tate.

All she has to do is keep winning.

Rumor: Nate Diaz Got Into Backstage Brawl At UFC 199

It’s no secret that last weekend’s (Sat., June 4, 2016) UFC 199 from The Forum in Inglewood, California, was a veritable showcase of blockbuster MMA action, starting with Dan Henderson’s legendary knockout of Hector Lombard in his home state, to Michael Bisping’s own shocking knockout of Luke Rockhold, to finally the jaw-dropping announcement of Brock Lesnar’s

It’s no secret that last weekend’s (Sat., June 4, 2016) UFC 199 from The Forum in Inglewood, California, was a veritable showcase of blockbuster MMA action, starting with Dan Henderson’s legendary knockout of Hector Lombard in his home state, to Michael Bisping’s own shocking knockout of Luke Rockhold, to finally the jaw-dropping announcement of Brock Lesnar’s return at UFC 200.

And to top if all off, the confirmation of the rescheduled rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor was revealed for the main event of August 20’s UFC 202, with Diaz appearing in the crowd to elicit a huge response from his West Coast fans.

The polarizing star also made quite an impact backstage at the event as well, as a report surfaced from MMA Mad detailing a backstage brawl between Diaz and Jason Guida, brother of longtime veteran Clay Guida, who lost to Brian Ortega at UFC 199. Apparently Evan Rodner, the producer of ‘The Fighter and the Kid’ podcast was on hand to witness what happened:

‘It looked like Nate Diaz got into an altercation with Jason Guida, Clay Guida’s older brother’ Rodner stated. ‘I have no idea what it was over, but all of a sudden there were a ton of bodies entering the tunnels in the back (of the arena). ‘After the scuffle had ended, Diaz walked back into the arena as though nothing had happened. he didn’t give on single f*ck’.

UFC welterweight Nicolas Dalby also reportedly saw the altercation, releasing a photo of his reaction.

Obviously Diaz is willing to throw down with anyone at anytime – whether it’s in the cage or not – and his 2015 scuffle with lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team prove the Stockton slugger’s commitment to stay true to his hard-life roots.

With a blockbuster rematch with McGregor, whom he famously submitted at March’s UFC 196, coming up, Diaz’ star level is at an all-time high, and this isn’t something that’s going to necessarily hurt that in any way, shape, or form.

In fact, it could just help him grow even more popular as heads into his second straight million-plus-dollar payday.

UFC welterweight king Robbie Lawler is set to make yet another title defense when he takes on No. 3-ranked Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 201 this July, but not all that long ago, he was linked with to a bout with Irish featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

Interestingly enough, many were talking up a ‘Ruthless’ vs. ‘Notorious’ match-up at July’s UFC if McGregor would have gotten past normal lightweight Nate Diaz at March 5’s UFC 196, but we all know what happened there.

Diaz submitted McGregor with a second-round rear-naked choke, kicking off a whirlwind of media hype and attention that has now lead to a rematch at August’s UFC 202. In an interview with an Atlanta news station (courtesy of @GrabakaHitman), Lawler said that’s a good thing, because he wouldn’t have came for McGregor’s neck if they had indeed fought.

He was coming for something else – his soul. Check it out:

Lawler continued on with his harsh words for McGregor adding that he was looking for a way out and Diaz gave him one by taking his neck:

An intense interview from the ‘Ruthless’ one to be sure, but judging on how the No. 5-ranked lightweight handled him only three months ago, perhaps it’s a good thing McGregor never got to square off with Lawler at 170 pounds.

Dana White Confirms RDA Is An Option For Conor McGregor’s Next Fight

Well, it looks as if the highly-anticipated rematch between Nate Diaz and reigning UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor may be further away from a reality than we had previously thought.

The two were originally set to rematch at July 9’s UFC 200, but McGregor was scrapped from the card after refusing to attend a promotional press conference in Las Vegas. There have since been rumors indicating that the second meeting could take place at August’s UFC 202.

According to UFC President Dana White, however, who appeared on today’s (June 6, 2016) edition of The Herd, Diaz is looking for a new and improved contract after his monstrous submission victory over McGregor last March at UFC 196.

White, however, admitted that Diaz already has a set contract with the promotion and that he’s now essentially ‘trying to blow up the deal’:

“What you try to do in a deal like this is you try to be as fair as you can be. Obviously the problem is we already have a deal — we have a deal. He has a contract. Conor has a deal,” White said. “He’s never come back and tried to renegotiate a contract. Ever.

“Nate, we signed a new deal going into that fight, then he signed the contract for UFC 200 and then Conor doesn’t show up for 200 so now Nate’s trying to blow up the deal. It’s frustrating but that’s the business that we’re in. This is what we do. Everybody’s not going to be happy all the time so now our job is, Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I, have to sit down and try to figure out how to make this deal work and we’ve been going back and forth trying to make this fight happen but the problem is timing. Now we’re running out of time.”

As White mentioned, time is certainly running out regarding UFC 202, and at the end of the day, the promotion may just need to move on:

“This fight’s supposed to be August 20 or something like that — I’ve already got September 20 done. I got that card made, it’s done and now we’re moving onto the next one,” White said. “So we’re going to get to a point here where we’re going to run out of time and we’re just not going to be able to make the fight. So Conor’s either going to have to pick a new opponent that he would like to fight or lose that date.”

The UFC boss admitted that Diaz’s star power has risen tremendously, and that he’s one of the millions of people who would like to see the fight happen.

If the UFC cannot reach an agreement for Diaz – McGregor II, however, the Irishman will indeed be booked against another opponent while Diaz’s future remains unclear. White listed off a few options for McGregor, and you may be surprised to see 155-pound boss Rafael dos Anjos on the list:

“The reality is since that Conor McGregor fight, obviously when you win a fight of that magnitude, it has definitely rubbed off on Nate. People do want to see Nate fight, people do want to see this fight again, and I’m one of those guys I want to make the fight the people want to see. I believe people want to see this fight.”

“But people want to see Conor McGregor fight Frankie Edgar or Jose Aldo again, too. I’m sure they’d want to see him fight Rafael dos Anjos at 155 for that title. So there’s a lot of fights out there for Conor if we can’t get this Nate fight done.”

McGregor was scheduled to fight dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight strap at UFC 196, but RDA was forced to withdraw with an injury, leading Diaz to accept the bout on short notice.

While a matchup between dos Anjos and McGregor would be intriguing, the Brazilian is scheduled to defend his title next month against Eddie Alvarez, meaning a bout between he and the Irishman would most likely take place near the end of 2016 at the earliest, putting McGregor’s title on hold for a year.

In my opinion, it has to be Diaz or a title defense for McGregor next.

What are your thoughts?
