In an epic performance, former Strikeforce Women’s Champion added another gold belt to her trophy closet on Saturday night, as she choked out Holly Holm to become only the third UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion in history.

After nearly choking out Holm in the second round on multiple occasions, but “The Preacher’s Daughter” managed to hang on and survive.

From there, Holm would get back in control of the action only to find herself in deep trouble again in the fifth and final round.

Trouble she would not manage to escape this time.

Miesha “Cupcake” Tate got Holm’s back and once again secured a rear-naked choke. Holm, in an attempt to escape threw Miesha over her head and while she landed awkwardly, Tate held onto the choke and Holm eventually went completely out.

And there you have it. We have a new UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion.

What this means for “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey’s return remains to be seen. Does she prefer getting the win back from Holm, or her title back from another rival of hers?

Only time will tell!

UFC 196 was one of the biggest events in recent MMA history. Conor McGregor has risen to the top of the pack, establishing himself as the biggest draw in the sport. While he had a lightweight title shot pulled out from under him when Rafael Dos Anjos broke his foot, he made sure that the show went on, facing off against Nate Diaz.

The co-main event, despite going largely unnoticed by fans, was no less important. Holly Holm became one of the sport’s breakout stars in 2015 when she defeated Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. That outcome sent the world into a tizzy and altered the future of women’s MMA.

Miesha Tate stepped into Rousey‘s presumed top-contender spot and hasn’t looked back. The lifelong wrestler looked to end the Holm era before it began, and rewrite her legacy by taking the UFC title.

All four of the main-eventers will likely be in attendance at the UFC 196 post-fight press conference to discuss the before, during and after of their fights. You can watch it all live above.

UFC welterweight Erick Silva was already something of a controversial figure out of the cage, but he hasn’t really done much to frustrate fans in the cage…until now. At UFC 196, opposite Nordine Taleb, the Brazilian knockout artist drew the ire of fans and pundits when he seemingly extended his hand for a glove touch and then followed it up with a sucker punch as Taleb extended his hand in return.

You can check out the moment here, per the UFC:

The punch didn’t do much damage, but the maneuver drew the ire of onlookers. Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Snowden labeled it “solid scumbaggery.” “Poor sportsmanship,” said MMAJunkie.com’s Brent Brookhouse. The list goes on.

Well, anyone who was hoping for comeuppance for Silva didn’t have to wait very long.

In the early goings of the second round, Silva went for a body kick. Taleb caught the kick with his left hand and sent a right straight down the pipe that cracked Silva cleanly. That led to a rare one-punch knockout that tied Silva in a knot and sent him crashing to the canvas face-first. Fox Sports: UFC provided reaction to the move:

The loss is Silva’s second in a row, evening his UFC record at 6-6. It’s a disappointing turn for the 31-year-old, who was once regarded as one of the UFC’s top prospects. Since losing to Top 10 mainstay Jon Fitch, Silva has been unable to score wins over anyone except blatantly overmatched competitors.

While Silva’s ceiling as a fighter lowers by the month, he will likely remain with the UFC for the foreseeable future. Look for the UFC to help him back into the win column with a squash match in Brazil.

UFC 196’s main card began with a women’s bantamweight tilt between Amanda Nunes (12-4) and Valentina Shevchenko (12-2). The “Lioness” got the win, but “Bullet” almost made a comeback.

The two bruisers were tentative in the beginning of the bout. Nunes connected with a leg kick. She went for a high kick, but got off balance momentarily. Nunes landed a kick to the body and took down her opponent with over 30 seconds left in the opening frame. She landed a stiff elbow in full guard. Shevchenko got back up, but was dumped back to the canvas as the round came to a close.

Shevchenko caught a body kick, but wound up on her back again. “Lioness” rained down some punches and elbows to bloody her opponent. “Bullet” tried to return to her feet, but Nunes kept her grounded. Some nasty hammerfists found the mark for the Brazilian. Nunes moved to side control, and then took the back of her opponent. “Lioness” went for a rear naked choke, but Shevchenko reversed to get to full guard at the end of the second stanza.

Nunes ducked under a punch and went for a takedown, but ate a knee to the body and an elbow. “Bullet” earned a takedown of her own and went to side control. She went for an americana and landed a couple of elbows. “Lioness” pushed her opponent off and the fight resumed standing. “Bullet” kneed Nunes in the head and connected with some punches in a guillotine position. Shevchenko threw a superman punch to the body. It was clearly “Bullet’s” round, but it appeared to be a case of too little too late.

All three judges scoring the fight at Octagon side gave the bout to Nunes.

Final Result: Amanda Nunes def. Valentina Shevchenko via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-27)

McGregor is set to face Nate Diaz tonight in front of a massive crowd in Las Vegas tonight. Diaz will be making $500,000 in purse tonight. According to Bleacher Report, Dana White said earlier this week that we could expect a $7.6 million gate which would be the third-highest in UFC history.
