Carlos Condit Not Retiring After All, Faces Demian Maia at UFC 202

Following his razor thin split-decision loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, it looked as if Carlos Condit might be hanging up his gloves for good. It was his second title fight loss in as many attempts (not counting his interim title win over Nick Diaz), the UFC didn’t appear to have any interest in booking an immediate rematch, and Condit himself had mentioned some concerns about the future of his mental well-being. When looking back on his illustrious 39-fight career, it just didn’t seem as if Condit had anything left to prove, which made his impending decision all the more sensible.

On the other hand, pride. If Georges St. Pierre, BJ Penn, and Fedor Emelianenko still believe that they have another title run left in them, then why shouldn’t Condit? A win over any top 10 opponent should put him right back in the running, so really, it’d be foolish for Condit *not* to put his health on the line for one last shot at glory, if you think about it.

Thankfully, it appears that this line of thinking is something that “The Natural Born Killer” can get behind, which is why he’s announced that he will in fact be returning to take on fellow top contender Demian Maia at UFC 202.

Details after the jump.

At 38 years of age, Maia is basically living, breathing proof that the 32-year-old Condit may very well have his best years still ahead of him. The Brazilian grappling specialist is currently riding a six fight win streak including one-sided wins over Matt Brown, Gunnar Nelson, and Neil Magny and seems destined for a title shot himself, which makes a matchup with Condit damn near poetic if you ask me.

Prior to his loss at UFC 195, Condit put the whooping of a lifetime on Thiago Alves en route to a second round TKO finish and should make for a tough style matchup against Maia, with the winner undoubtedly being on the short list of challengers for the welterweight title. That is, unless the current crop of contenders (Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson) find themselves in a Hendricks-Lawler-MacDonald rematch love triangle like we’ve seen before. Which knowing our luck will almost certainly happen, for the MMA Gods are a cruel and unforgiving bunch.

In other welterweight fight booking news, Dong Hyun Kim has agreed to face Neil Magny at UFC 202 in a matchup that will likely earn the winner a chance to get slaughtered by the Condit-Maia winner, the Woodley-Lawler loser, or maybe Johny Hendricks. After seeing his 4-fight win streak halted by “T-Wood” (I’m sorry, “The Chosen One”) back in 2014, Kim bounced back last year with back-to-back wins over Josh Burkman and Dominic Waters. Magny is similarly enjoying a bit of a rebound streak, having scored three straight wins over Erick Silva, Kelvin Gastelum, and Hector Lombard since being dominated by Maia at UFC 190.

Fun fact: Magny has fought 11 times in the past 2 years, which is just two fights shy of what former P4P king Cain velasquez has fought in his entire UFC career.

UFC 202 goes down on August 20th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Throughout the duration of his monumental meteoric rise to the top of the sport, reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor has established himself as the promotion’s biggest draw. Aside from serving as the face of the company, the brash Irishman has repeatedly stated that he’s on his way to being ‘neck and neck’ with the UFC brass in terms of the promotional hierarchy.

While McGregor may seem outlandish at times, he truly believes in his star power and it shows within his words and his actions. With that being said, it’s an interesting time for the Dublin native given the constantly swirling rumors of a potential sale of the UFC.

According to his long-time coach John Kavanagh, McGregor may even request a stake in the company if it were indeed to sell (Via Sunday Business Post):

“John Kavanagh, the coach of Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor, has said he expects that the sport’s breakout athlete would ask for a stake in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) if it was sold.”

“With rumours circulating of a $4.2 billion UFC sale, Kavanagh raised the prospect of McGregor seeking equity from any new owner.”

“Conor will have thought of this and I am sure, when he is sitting down with his new overlords, he will have that conversation,” Kavanagh said.”

McGregor is coming off of the first loss of his Octagon career after being submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196, although his name value hasn’t diminished. In fact, the Irishman’s upcoming rematch with Diaz at August 20’s UFC 202 is expected to do massive numbers in terms of pay-per-view sales.

Former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit will return at UFC 202, taking on Demian Maia.

Condit (30-9) is coming off a split decision loss to Robbie Lawler this past January for the welterweight title. He is 2-4 over his last six, with three of the four defeats being decision setbacks. The other was a TKO loss to current title contender Tyron Woodly after “The Natural Born Killer” suffered a knee injury.

Maia (23-6) has won five in a row, including a May submission win over Matt Brown. He previously competed for the UFC middleweight title before moving to welterweight.

UFC 202 takes place August 20 from Las Vegas and features Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and former women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey have a lot in common. They are probably the first two names that come to mind when the phrase ‘MMA superstar’ arises, but they also shared a very similar sequence of events in the last year. After receiving previously unseen amounts of hype before their most recent fights, both Rousey and McGregor suffered well publicized and career-altering defeats; In fights they were both heavily favored to get the win.

For ‘Rowdy,’ the loss to Holly Holm might well have marked the last time the ex-champion fights, period. The circumstances surrounding ‘The Notorious’ and his first UFC loss were slightly diferfent though, but the outcome was nearly identical; massive backlash from fans who rejoiced in his defeat, although McGregor never suffered the deep depression and life changing sorrow that Rousey did, at least not extrovertly. His submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 has spurred a rematch at UFC 202 on August 20.

Both McGregor and Rousey can arguably get the credit for bringing more attention to the UFC in the last year than the promotion had ever experienced before. Their brash manner and hogging of the limelight made them household names, and with it the banner for whom they compete. Casual fans who knew nothing of the sport before now had the name and date, and also how to watch these outrageous superstars attempt to back up their trash talk in the octagon.

Even after their respective losses, Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey are superstars still. That’s what made this image, when released months back, quite a tantalising and sensational subject:

All we knew was that the two titans of modern MMA were staring each other down for some kind of commercial featuring Bud Light. Well now it’s explained further, as this teaser trailer (as if we needed it) has been released. It would appear that McGregor and Rousey are members of opposing teams taking part in a type of MMA challenge.

Check out the video that was uploaded over the weekend, and stay tuned for more info:

The middleweight division got a lot more interesting at UFC 199, as Michael Bisping put together a lifetime performance in knocking out Luke Rockhold. A seemingly advantageous position for ‘Rocky’ actually turned out to be a nightmare. Chris Weidman dropped out injured and ‘The Count’ stepped in on two weeks notice to score a huge win. Having already wobbled and submitted Bisping in their first fight, The American Kickboxing Academy representative came in to the June 4 pay-per-view main slot as heavy favorite.

After 10 years of toiling in the upper-middle tier, always falling at that pivotal stage of his run at the belt, Bisping had staked his claim, and with that came all new rivalries. Never before has a single victory caused so many ripples, spreading out to the very edges of the division and including some of the most well known names in mixed martial arts history.

Suddenly Dan Henderson was being talked about for a rematch, for obvious reasons, and Bisping was on board. But then Georges St-Pierre, the former welterweight champion, claimed he’d be making a return at 185 pounds and wanted a piece of the Englishman. Contenders Jacare Souza and the long-absent Tim Kennedy, former champions Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold and Anderson Silva all have recently issued challenges to ‘The Count.’ After a decade of being dismissed by his fellow middleweights, Bisping now holds the 185-pound world in his hands.

But one interesting fight that may come of this shuffle of affairs in the middleweight category includes Yoel Romero. Although currently on the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) mandated suspension which was eventually agreed upon to expire after only six months, ‘Soldier of God’s’ return date is now in sight. He was initially popped for growth hormone, but it was later revealed through testing that a legal supplement had indeed carried the illicit substance. Romero took to Twitter to send out a statement to the consensus greatest welterweight of all time, Georges St-Pierre:

Given his stern stance against PED (performance enhancing drug) use in MMA, albeit to a lightly lesser and unfortunate degree, do you think ‘Rush’ will have any interest in fighting Romero? Further to that, if the ex-champion can walk straight in to title contention with a fight against Bisping, why worry about anyone else in the meantime?

August 20’s UFC 202 pay-per-view (PPV) from Las Vegas already has a blockbuster main event in Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz, and now it has two more high-profile bouts joining its lineup.

Announcements came tonight that light heavyweights Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson and Glover Teixeira will meet on the card. The fight is a rescheduling of their UFC on FOX 20 bout that was recently called off due to an injury to ‘Rumble.’

The No. 2-ranked ‘Rumble’ has won two straight blurs by knockout over Ryan Bader and Jimi Manuwa. Teixeira, meanwhile, has won three straight by finish over Rashad Evans, Patrick Cummins, and Ovince St. Preux. The winner of the fight is expected to get the next crack at the winner of UFC 200’s Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones main event.

The event also got a big boost in the form of a welterweight scrap between rising veterans Donald Cerrone and Rick Story. After a failed title bout against lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos late last year, fan favorite ‘Cowboy’ has made an extremely successful transition to welterweight by stopping Patrick Côte and Alex Oliveira in consecutive bouts.
