Current No. 10-ranked UFC heavyweight Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis is coming off of the biggest win of his career, as he took home a split decision win over Roy Nelson at UFC Fight Night 90 this past July.

Now the Houstonian is itching to get back into the Octagon against big name competition, and has former heavyweight king Fabricio Werdum on his radar.

Werdum was previously scheduled to co-headline UFC 203 in Cleveland against No. 5-ranked Ben Rothwell, but unfortunately ‘Big Ben’ was forced out of the competition citing an injury which opened up the door for No. 7-ranked Travis Browne to step in and save the day.

Despite Browne stepping in for the injured Rothwell, Lewis would take to social media to express his displeasure for the UFC’s emergency booking:

‘Vai Cavalo’ has seen Lewis’ campaigns for a bout against him and, courtesy of MMA Junkie, the former Brazilian champ believes a matchup against ‘The Black Beast’ would certainly be a dangerous one:

“I think the fans would also like a fight against him,” Werdum said. “He’s dangerous, strong, heavy, right there at the limit. But Travis Browne will also be interesting, also because it’s a rematch, they want to see it as well. With anyone, really, the important thing is coming out victorious.”

Despite the fact that he was not able to step in at UFC 203, Lewis is ready to get back inside of the Octagon and believes he can beat anyone in the UFC’s heavyweight division:

“I’m always working on myself,” Lewis said. “I really don’t care about my opponent. His strong suit or whatever, or his weakness, I’m just worrying about myself.

I feel like as long as my condition is on point I don’t believe anyone can beat me. I don’t care who that is.”

Lewis was asked how he believes he matches up with current heavyweight king Stipe Miocic, and concluded that in the big boys’ division i only takes one shot to put the other man across from him to sleep:

“I think I match up very well,” Lewis said. “He’s a heavyweight and everyone in the heavyweight division… One hand he can knock you out and this and that.

You know, I just look at everyone as just average, really. I feel like everyone in the heavyweight division can win on any given day. I don’t believe anyone in the division, even myself, is unbeatable.

It really doesn’t matter. I look at all of them the same, everyone average.”

When asked on his thoughts of the newly-established fighter’s union Lewis had no knowledge of it’s existence but admitted he believes it is a good thing, while also stating that he doesn’t believe in the fighters’ need for a manager a the moment:

“I guess it’s a good thing,” Lewis said. “If it’s got anything to do with us making more money, I’m down with it. I believe we don’t need a manager right now, they can’t get us no sponsors or anything. So we’re wasting money on managers.”

When told that his manager might be offended by his comments, Lewis had this to say:

“I don’t care, what is he going to do?” Lewis said.“‘We can’t manage you no more, I don’t want your percentage?’ OK”

Derrick-Lewis-1Earlier in the year Lewis made a bold prediction that 70 percent of the UFC’s heavyweight division are abusing performance enhancing drugs (PED’s), and now the former George Foreman boxing product is claiming he has no problem stepping into a cage fight against man who is ‘juicing’:

“I don’t care if the guy is juicing or not, it really don’t matter,” Lewis said. “That stuff don’t help, you know. It just makes you look good. But I believe steroids don’t give you that extra boost when you go out there.

First of all, I believe the guys taking it, they’re really insecure. So, that’s the only advantage I see. Just being insecure about it and making yourself feel good. I guess they think they have that extra boost.”

Following the interview Lewis took to Instagram to post that he will be taking on Marcin Tybura at UFC Fight Night 97 in Pasay, Manila, and his representatives confirmed the bout shortly after.

UFC Fight Night 97 takes place live from the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, Manila on October 15, 2016.

Fabricio Werdum On UFC 203 Shakeup: I Said I’d Fight Anyone

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum is set to compete for the first time since surrendering his title in brutal fashion to Stipe Miocic last May at September 10’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio, the very card that will host Miocic’s first title defense against Alistair Overeem. Werdum was originally slated to meet No. 5-ranked Ben Rothwell, but Rothwell was forced to withdraw from the bout earlier this week with an injury. In the aftermath of the unfortunate news, the UFC quickly announced that No. 7-ranked Travis Browne would step up on short notice for a rematch with Werdum.

Recently speaking on the shakeup, “Vai Cavalo” said that he’s never chosen his opponent, and he didn’t this time either, adding that he just wanted to make sure he remained on the card in which the title is being defended:

“The important thing is that I’m fighting,” Werdum told MMAjunkie.“I never had that option of picking an opponent. The UFC said it was Travis Browne, I said yes, signed the contract and sent it already. Whether it was Ben Rothwell or Derrick Lewis – it could have been anyone. I just wanted to fight at the same event as Miocic and Overeem.

“I didn’t have an option. I saw Derrick Lewis say he’d fight me on twitter, but the UFC never brought him up. I told my manager, ‘I’ll fight anyone, I don’t care who it is.’ Browne was the chosen one and I was fine with it. I didn’t get to choose my opponent, which I’ve never done in the past either.”

The Brazilian is happy that he received another top 10 opponent, although he does feel that the only ‘fair’ fight would’ve been a rematch with Miocic given the fact that he remains the No. 1-ranked heavyweight:

“The fair thing would actually be the rematch (against Miocic), because I’m the first in the UFC rankings and Miocic is the only one above me,” Werdum said. “So you can’t really say anyone else is ‘fair.’ The important thing is fighting a top-10. So there’s not much to say. I think Browne has a strong name, he’s well-known, I fought him once and I think I have a slight advantage because I won. I won’t rely on that thought too much, though, because I know there are no easy fights in the UFC.”

Werdum and Browne first met back in 2014 at UFC on FOX 11 where “Vai Cavalo” scored a dominant decision victory. This time, however, he will be gunning for a finish:

“I expect a similar fight,” Werdum said. “But I’ll try to submit him or knock him out. I think that’s what every fighter wants, everyone wants to finish the fight as soon as possible. I don’t think people want to win on points – it’s very difficult to see anyone saying, ‘I’ll win via decision.’

“First minute, second round, as soon as I can. But we’ll try to put on a fight like we did last time, a bout that many people say was the best of my career.”

Werdum vs. Browne

Do you expect Werdum to get back on track next month?

Alistair Overeem: I Wouldn’t Want To Be CM Punk

Legendary Dutch kick boxer Alistair “The Reem” Overeem is gearing up to headline UFC 203 on September 10th in a clash with reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, although fans won’t only be tuning in for the intriguing title fight. Former professional wrestler Philip “CM Punk” Brooks is set to make his mixed martial arts debut on the main card as well in a welterweight bout with Mickey Gall. Punk has received a tremendous amount of criticism since signing on with the UFC in 2014, but it’s safe to say that thousands and thousands of fans will tune in to see how he does.

Overeem actually happens to be curious in the fight, although he did say that he wouldn’t like to be Punk right now given the fact that the former WWE champion may have a ‘hard time’ ahead of him:

“Yeah, I’m curious as to how he’s going to do of course,” Overeem said during an appearance on The MMA Hour. “But I think he’s in for a hard time. I don’t know who he’s matched against, but this is definitely different than pro wrestling. Especially in his weight class, he’s a welterweight, I believe — those guys are tough man. He’s going to experience it firsthand. And you know the thing is too? If he does bad, the whole world’s going to be on top of him. If he does good, the next guy will be in line for him, and the next guy is going to just keep on coming. There’s so many good guys at welterweight.

“So, that’s definitely somebody I wouldn’t want to be right now.”

As for why he’s so interested in Punk’s debut, “The Reem” said that he likes when people challenge themselves, adding that he’ll have a ton of respect for Punk if he keeps going in the sport win or lose:

“I love the idea that he got into the UFC because I love tests,” he said. “And he’s about to test himself, and you know, I’m going to have extra respect for him if he keeps on going. If he wins, and even if he loses — if he wins and he keeps on going I’m going to have extra respect for him, but now we’re going to see what he is made of. Now we’re going to see the true character. Everybody wants to be a fighter, right until they get hit, until they get their face broken.

“So we’re going to see what’s going to happen. All these guys are going to line up. They all want to break him. They all want to break him mentally, physically, and it’s not going to be fun for him. He’s a hunted prey. Why? Because he’s a big name. Because he’s a big money fight. So he’s going to be the hunted. And it’s going to be a lot of respect, if he’s going to be able to hold up and if he can stand his ground and become victorious. I’ll be watching that fight definitely. And again, I like people who take challenges.”

What are you expecting from Punk’s debut?

It looks like former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne will soon be dance partners inside the Octagon once again.

Werdum was originally scheduled to fight Ben Rothwell in his next bout, however the news surfaced earlier this week that Rothwell was forced to pull out of the fight due to an injury, rumored to be a torn meniscus and potential ACL issue.

MMAJunkie.com was first to report the news that “Hapa” Browne is expected to be the replacement for Rothwell in the match against the Brazilian heavyweight veteran.

Werdum and Browne fought against each other the first time back at the UFC On FOX 11 event in April of 2014, with a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line. Werdum would dominate and defeat Browne by way of unanimous decision and would then go on to beat Cain Velasquez to win the title.

In his last fight, Werdum was knocked out by Stipe Miocic in the first round to lose the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Meanwhile, Browne suffered a loss in his last Octagon appearance as well, as former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez defeated him at the landmark UFC 200 event.

The Werdum-Browne 2 fight is expected to take place as part of the UFC 203 pay-per-view, which takes place at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, September 10, 2016 and features Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem for the UFC Heavyweight Championship as the main event. Also scheduled for the card is the Octagon debut of former WWE Superstar Phil “CM Punk” Brooks, as he takes on Mickey Gall.

Travis Browne Faces Fabricio Werdum At UFC 203

Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum hit a bump in the road this week. His scheduled first fight since being knocked out against Stipe Miocic fell apart when Ben Rothwell injured his knee. ‘Vai Cavalo’ had previously ran hot with victories over Roy Nelson, Mike Russow, Travis Browne, Big Nog, Mark Hunt and Cain Velasquez.

Following his most recent title unification win over Velasquez, the Brazilian champ sat dormant for 11 months before tasting the power of Miocic and losing the belt.

With ‘Big Ben’ out of the September 10 co-main event, ‘Vai Cavalo’ will now rematch the man he beat en route to the heavyweight strap, as ‘Hapa’ steps in. Browne last fought at UFC 200 on July 9, receiving a one-sided TKO loss from former champ Cain Velasquez. In fact since the Werdum fight, Browne has gone 2-2 with stoppages in both categories.

Browne vs. Overeem

With both men coming off losses coming in to the Cleveland based card, another ‘L’ could well squash the hopes of another title run. Werdum is 39 and has competed since 2002, his biggest win was arguably over Fedor Emelianenko in Strikeforce. ‘Hapa’ is the younger man at 34 years of age, but has seen a lot of punishment in the last two years. In the division where a single punch ends fights regularly, who will come out on top?

Werdum put on a clinic while wining a decision over Browne in 2014, setting himself up for the interim title fight with Mark Hunt at UFC 188.

Here’s how the UFC 203 fight card looks now.

Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem

Travis Browne vs. Fabricio Werdum

Nik Lentz vs. Mairbek Taisumov

Damir Hadzovic vs. Yukawa Kazuya

Mickey Gall vs. CM Punk

Bethe Correia vs. Jessica Eye

Urijah Faber vs. Jimmie Rivera

Jessica Andrade vs. Joanne Calderwood

Ray Borg vs. Ian McCall

Caio Magalhaes vs. Brad Tavares

Drew Dober vs. Jason Gonzalez

According to a report by MMAjunkie, UFC heavyweight contender Ben Rothwell has been forced out of next month’s UFC 203 co-main event fight with Fabricio Werdum.

The report states that the promotion is actively seeking a replacement to keep Werdum, a former UFC heavyweight champion, on the September 10 card from Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.

Rothwell (36-10) has gone 6-4 over his UFC career, but was recently bested by former champion Junior dos Santos after four consecutive wins. A member of his team stated that Rothwell suffered a torn meniscus and possible ACL injury.

Werdum (20-6-1) dropped the title to Stipe Miocic earlier this year in Brazil. He is 8-3 over two stints with the UFC.

Miocic is set to make his first defense on the card in his home state against top challenger Alistair Overeem.
