Dan Henderson Was ‘Absolutely’ Ready To Retire After UFC 199

Many fight fans were extremely surprised to see No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson receive a title shot against newly minted 185-pound champion Michael Bisping, but he did, and the two are slated to face off in a rematch at UFC 204 on October 8, 2016 in Bisping’s home of Manchester, England. Many were also surprised to hear Henderson, who currently sits at age 45, say that win or lose, he would retire after the title fight, but he appears to be sticking to his guns. In fact, the former Olympian was ready to hang up his gloves after his stoppage victory over Hector Lombard at June 4’s UFC 199:

“It all depended on what my options were afterwards as far as employment goes,” Henderson said on Monday’s The MMA Hour. “I was ready to kind of have that one be my last fight depending on, like I said, what options I’d have. For whatever reason, the stars aligned and the fans asked for one more fight, I guess.”

Despite the matchup being a somewhat strange one, at least from a rankings standpoint, Henderson admits that he wasn’t overly surprised by the booking given the interest from fans as well as Bisping himself:

“I don’t know if I was surprised just because I saw on my social media and all over the place how many fans wanted that fight,” he said. “The UFC does listen to the fans sometimes. It didn’t hurt, like I said, that Michael Bisping wanted the fight also.”

“Hendo”, a former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion, has achieved great things in his lengthy career, although a UFC title has been the one shiny gold strap that has avoided his grasp. While he may not have expected to receive a shot at the belt this late in his career, he now plans to make the most of the opportunity, as becoming a UFC champion is one of the last goals he had set for himself:

“It’s something I didn’t think was going to happen and now it’s happening and I’m going to make sure to make the most of it.”

“It’s pretty much the last goal that had set for myself,” he admitted. “A couple of years ago as I lost a couple of times here and there and wasn’t having the best of luck, I kinda figured that I wouldn’t have that opportunity again, but I was still satisfied with what I’ve done with my career and satisfied with myself with not having that UFC belt. But it is the last one that I don’t have.”

As far as what Henderson plans to do after his fighting career hits its expiration date, he said that he’d like to talk with the UFC about potentially representing the promotion in some way outside of the Octagon:

” [I] kinda wanted to finish my contract up and have a talk with Dana [White] about either representing [the UFC] in some capacity outside of the cage in working for the UFC,” he said. “That was what I was going to speak with them about, not necessarily fighting again.”

Are you giving Henderson a chance against Bisping?

Michael Bisping Explains Why He Wants Dan Henderson Rematch

After upsetting Luke Rockhold with a vicious first round knockout at June 4’s UFC 199 to become the undisputed 185-pound champion, Michael Bisping turned some heads when he expressed interest in first defending his title against 45-year-old No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, but “The Count” was granted his wish, as the bout was recently confirmed for October 8’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England.

The two first met back at 2009’s UFC 100 where Henderson scored one of the most iconic knockouts of all-time. With that being said, it’s clear that Bisping is out for revenge, but that isn’t the only reason he requested the fight.

Recently speaking on the matter, Bisping reminisced on the now infamous testosterone-replacement-therapy (TRT) era, saying that he didn’t even know what it was or that “Hendo” was on it. The substance has since been banned, but “The Count” feels as if Henderson had an unfair advantage the first time around:

“That is the main reason [why I want to fight him] — because, I didn’t even know TRT existed. I had no idea he was on it or that it even existed, so I went into that fight not knowing that,” he admitted to DailyStar. “Of course, now TRT is not allowed and he’s still fighting so that was all bullshit that clearly proves it was bullshit and system manipulation.”

Despite his reasoning, Bisping has received criticism for asking for the fight due to Henderson’s age and the fact that he’s lost three of his last five, but “The Count” says that the former Olympian is still knocking people out:

“I know he’s an older man now, but I still owe him one,” he said. “He’s still knocking people out so let’s do it.”

Henderson is indeed coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard this past June. How do you see the rematch between him and Bisping playing out?

The folks in the United Kingdom will need to drink some extra coffee or energy drinks this October, as UFC 204 takes place with normal North America start times.

The pay-per-view event features Michael Bisping returning to the Manchester Arena in England to defend his middleweight belt vs. Dan Henderson. Back at UFC 100, Henderson landed the “H-bomb” in a moment that continues to haunt “The Count” to this day.

For the start times, the main card is expected to begin at 3 a.m. local time in Manchester, with all the action beginning at 11 p.m. In North America, the event will take place October 8 starting at 6 p.m.

Along with Bisping-Henderson, middleweight contenders Vitor Belfort and Gegard Mousasi collide. Ovince Saint Preux, who went the distance with Jon Jones earlier this year for the interim UFC light heavyweight title, meets Jimi Manuwa, while Stefan Struve takes on Ruslan Magomedov in a heavyweight encounter.

The rest of the lineup at this point includes Leonardo Santos-Adriano Martins, Iuri Alcantara-Brad Pickett and Samian Stasiak-Davey Grant.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping wasted no time in lining up his first opponent. Once he’d knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 there were many options available, but Bisping only wanted one fight. The 37-year old wanted another fight with his old rival Dan Henderson. The ageing former Pride FC champion got one over on ‘The Count’ at UFC 100, handing him a highlight reel knockout loss that was both amazing and brutal.

The promotion picked up on the appeal of the rematch and ran with it, booking the two bitter enemies in for a second dance at UFC 204. The bout will go down in Manchester, England, but will air in line with US times. The main card will kick off at 3 AM local time. Since the fight was reported there’s been a lot of heat from Hendo and Bisping. The Englishman accused his American foe of taking steroids, also claiming Henderson would cheat for UFC 204.

Official Announcement

The promotion officially announced today that Bisping vs. Henderson would headline UFC 204. Six other big fights were also confirmed for the English card, but it’s that main event that has fans and fighters both happy and angry. Many feel the 45-year old Henderson is jumping too many legitimate contenders in the queue at 185 pounds. These contenders include Yoel Romero, Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza to name a few.

Bisping took to Instagram today to respond to the announcement, and also gave a message to the haters:

The era of ‘money fights’ is officially here, and it’s not just Bisping cashing in on this current trend. Look no further than Tyron Woodley or Conor McGregor to see that rankings are rapidly losing their already waning legitimacy. Whether this is good or bad for the sport is yet to be seen, but it certainly makes for some very interesting fights.

For instance, how crazy would it be if Henderson rode off in to the sunset with a UFC title on his back? That’s the ultimate mic-drop moment.

Here’s how the UFC 204 card looks so far:

Michael Bisping v Dan Henderson
Gegard Mousasi v Vitor Belfort
Jimi Manuwa v Ovince Saint Preux
Stefan Struve v Ruslan Magomedov
Brad Pickett v Iuri Alcantara
Davey Grant v Damian Stasiak
Adriano Martins v Leonardo Santos

Michael Bisping To Weidman: Go & Beat Luke, I’ll Be Waiting

2016 has been quite the year so far for UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, as the longtime veteran finally added his crowning achievement of UFC gold to his resume with a shocking first-round knockout of heavily favored Luke Rockhold at June 4’s UFC 199 from Los Angeles.

Since that day, the speculation has run wild about just whom Bisping would face next in the top-heavy middleweight landscape, with obvious bouts against top contenders Chris Weidman and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza lining up as the most glaring examples.

Weidman, who was scheduled to rematch Rockhold at UFC 199 before a neck injury forced him out, has been extremely vocal with the opinion that Bisping is “running,” but Souza has also stirred that stance up himself. But Bisping eschewed both top fighters for a bout against his 45-year-old arch rival Dan Henderson, who knocked out Hector Lombard at UFC 199, in the main event of October’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England.

Bisping had some forceful words for Weidman’s accusations in an interview with The Daily Star Report (via Bloody Elbow), stating that the logic of a match with Weidman doesn’t add up:

“The logic just doesn’t stack up because I just knocked out a guy in three minutes that beat the living daylights out of you. So why would I be running scared from him?

“The fact is you lost the fight. Ok, you were scheduled for a title fight against Luke because that was a rematch.”

“The Count” believes the former champion should go and win a big fight before he gets a shot at his title:

“But it’s not a rematch with me, we’ve never fought before. So you need to win a fight. You don’t get title shots coming off a loss unless your name is Chael Sonnen. So go and win a fight, Chris.”

Bisping then closed by turning the tables on Weidman, insinuating that it was actually he who was running scared:

“Who is really scared here? Are you worried you won’t win a fight? Is that why you want a title shot straight away?

“Go and beat Luke like your were supposed to. If you beat Luke I’ll still be here. I plan on keeping this.”

Michael Bisping: No Coincidence I’m Champion After USADA

Following the UFC’s implication of the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) strict drug testing policy in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), fighters have been dropping like flies to the agency’s strict testing criteria.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is never one to shy away from words, and it wasn’t any different in his recent piece for Champions.co regarding the new drug testing polices.

The 185-pound champ ‘The Count’ doesn’t believe that it’s a coincidence that he finally won the first title in his decade-long UFC career, by knocking out then-champion Luke Rockhold in the first round of the main event of UFC 199 this past June, after the UFC decided to get in bed with USADA in 2015:

Michael Bisping knocked out Luke Rockhold in one round at UFC 199

“The only thing that I know is that I am not on steroids. You can bet whatever you want to bet. I’ll say that on my children’s lives, on my wife’s life, on my mother’s life…anything you want. I can say with all the integrity and honesty in the world, and I’ll still be able to look you in the eye and sleep at night, I do not take performance enhancing drugs.

Anybody else, I don’t know about. It’s not my business, but since USADA has come in, I am now the champion. You do the math on that one and let me know what you come up with. I don’t really want to kick people when they’re down, because the people that have failed their drug tests have probably punished themselves plenty. I can only imagine the UFC’s frustration.

With so many of the top dogs out, maybe I can get three fights in each year. Two fights is never enough, in my opinion, but I am fortunate that this year, I’m getting those coveted three fights. It’ll be the first time in a while that it’s happened.

Bisping will make his first title defense against old rival Dan Henderson at UFC 204

I’m happy and I feel a sense of pride in that I’m a relatively old school UFC fighter. I’m no Matt Hughes or Chuck Liddell, but I’ve been on the roster for over a decade, and I’m proud of that. I was on The Ultimate Fighter 3, not 30, you know what I’m saying? It’s nice to be one of the older guys, the longer tenured guys and I have the belt on top of it all.

You know what the best part is? I’ve been here all this time, and I’ve never tested positive for anything other than hard work and dedication. I take a lot of pride in that, and I look forward to the rest of my career knowing that I’ve accomplished all this on my own terms, without the benefit of external drugs. In this day and age, that’s quite an achievement.”

Bisping will defend his middleweight title against Dan Henderson in the main event of UFC 204 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England on October 8, 2016.
