Dan Henderson Would Consider Return For ‘A Lot Of Money’

Dan Henderson said no to a comeback fight – unless the money is right.

With former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell coming out of retirement and his longtime rival Tito Ortiz rumored to follow suit, it seems like old is new once again in the MMA world.

UFC legend Dan Henderson doesn’t have any plans on making an Octagon return, however. That is unless enough money is on the table to persuade him to do so.

The former Pride FC champion was asked whether or not he’d fight again someday, and Henderson was completely blunt about his reasoning:

“I have no plan on getting back in there. I wouldn’t say wasting their time if they had a lot of money.”

Henderson captured titles in Pride FC and Strikeforce made his UFC return back in 2011 and alternated between wins and losses until retiring in 2016. Henderson hung up the gloves officially after a decision loss to then-champion Michael Bisping back at UFC 204.

”Hendo” earned some miraculous victories in his well-traveled career, knocking out Fedor Emelianenko at heavyweight, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at light heavyweight, Bisping at middleweight, and also securing knockout wins over Hector Lombard and Tim Boetsch before losing to Bisping and retiring.

Henderson kept it competitive for the most part, even towards the end of his storied career, and didn’t necessarily get knocked out into retirement.

Would it be worth the UFC – or any other top-level promotion – offering Henderson enough money for a comeback fight?

Michael Bisping successfully defended his UFC middleweight title for the very first time at last weekend’s (October 8, 2016) UFC 204 from his home of Manchester, England, scoring a unanimous decision victory over Dan Henderson in a five round war that left him battered and bloodied, albeit still the titleholder.

With his first title defense now in the rear-view mirror, Bisping can look at what lies ahead, and it may only get tougher for him from here on out. The murder’s row of middleweight contenders will be competing next month to earn the next shot at divisional supremacy.

Let’s take a deeper look into potential opponents for Bisping and how he may fare against each of them:

Chris Weidman

Chris Weidman

No. 2-ranked former champion Chris Weidman hasn’t competed since surrendering his title to Luke Rockhold at last December’s UFC 194, but he’s set to return to action at November 12’s UFC 205 from New York against No. 4-ranked Yoel Romero.

Weidman was actually scheduled to rematch Rockhold at June 4’s UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury. Bisping stepped up on short notice and took out Rockhold to become the undisputed champion. With that being said, if Weidman can indeed get by Romero, a man who’s won seven straight UFC bouts, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him receive the next title shot.

In terms of how Bisping and Weidman stack up against each other, it would undoubtedly be an interesting clash from a stylistic standpoint.

Weidman has always been a tough and gritty wrestling-based fighter with powerful and ever-improving striking as well as strong submission skills. In my opinion, Bisping may hold the pure striking advantage in terms of combinations, movement, and footwork, although I’d give Weidman the advantage in the grappling department.

Bisping, however, has always had solid takedown defense, and keeping the fight on the feet against Weidman would be a crucial factor. To defend his title against the ex-champion, “The Count” would likely have to use his speed and angles to pick Weidman apart on the feet, while avoiding the New York native’s power. I simply don’t see him having much success if Weidman gets a hold of him.

The rankings have been thrown out the window when it comes to the main event of this weekend’s (October 8, 2016) UFC 204 from Manchester, England. Instead, revenge has taken over as newly crowned 185-pound champion Michael Bisping will attempt to avenge one of the most iconic knockouts of all time in a rematch against No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson.

Back at UFC 100 in July 2009, Henderson blasted Bisping with a right hand that will live on forever. Fast forward to present day, and Bisping is coming off of a shocking knockout victory over Luke Rockhold that made him the undisputed champion. Henderson, on the other hand, sits at age 46 and has said this will be the final fight of his legendary career.

Both fighters are clearly at different points of their respective careers then they were at when they met the first time. With that being said, let’s take a look at five reasons why Bisping will destroy Henderson this time around.

Newly minted middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping will look to make the first defense of his 185-pound title at October 8’s UFC 204 from his home of Manchester, England against longtime veteran Dan “Hendo” Henderson. Bisping has made it clear that he’s out to avenge the iconic knockout loss he suffered to “Hendo” at UFC 100 back in 2009, and apparently the Brit doesn’t plan on fighting till the final bell.

In fact, Bisping recently told Independent that he sees a third round finish in his future:

“With Dan Henderson, everybody knows you don’t even need to do research to know that it’s his right hand. Dan Henderson has a heavy left and right hand. I, of course, found out at UFC 100. And I’ve got to watch that right hand. It’s simple as that. I respect Dan Henderson. I’ve got the speed advantage. Saying that, I had the speed advantage last time but he caught me. So I’ve got to be careful and stick to the basics. If I do the basics well, I win the fight. Keep my chin tucked in, keep my guard high and deliver fast powerful shots. I think as the fight progresses; I will wear him down then I will look for the finish in round three.”

Both Bisping and Henderson last competed at UFC 199 on June 4, 2016. Henderson scored a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard while Bisping shocked the world and knocked out Luke Rockhold in the main event of the evening to become the undisputed champion.

Dan Henderson Was ‘Absolutely’ Ready To Retire After UFC 199

Many fight fans were extremely surprised to see No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson receive a title shot against newly minted 185-pound champion Michael Bisping, but he did, and the two are slated to face off in a rematch at UFC 204 on October 8, 2016 in Bisping’s home of Manchester, England. Many were also surprised to hear Henderson, who currently sits at age 45, say that win or lose, he would retire after the title fight, but he appears to be sticking to his guns. In fact, the former Olympian was ready to hang up his gloves after his stoppage victory over Hector Lombard at June 4’s UFC 199:

“It all depended on what my options were afterwards as far as employment goes,” Henderson said on Monday’s The MMA Hour. “I was ready to kind of have that one be my last fight depending on, like I said, what options I’d have. For whatever reason, the stars aligned and the fans asked for one more fight, I guess.”

Despite the matchup being a somewhat strange one, at least from a rankings standpoint, Henderson admits that he wasn’t overly surprised by the booking given the interest from fans as well as Bisping himself:

“I don’t know if I was surprised just because I saw on my social media and all over the place how many fans wanted that fight,” he said. “The UFC does listen to the fans sometimes. It didn’t hurt, like I said, that Michael Bisping wanted the fight also.”

“Hendo”, a former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion, has achieved great things in his lengthy career, although a UFC title has been the one shiny gold strap that has avoided his grasp. While he may not have expected to receive a shot at the belt this late in his career, he now plans to make the most of the opportunity, as becoming a UFC champion is one of the last goals he had set for himself:

“It’s something I didn’t think was going to happen and now it’s happening and I’m going to make sure to make the most of it.”

“It’s pretty much the last goal that had set for myself,” he admitted. “A couple of years ago as I lost a couple of times here and there and wasn’t having the best of luck, I kinda figured that I wouldn’t have that opportunity again, but I was still satisfied with what I’ve done with my career and satisfied with myself with not having that UFC belt. But it is the last one that I don’t have.”

As far as what Henderson plans to do after his fighting career hits its expiration date, he said that he’d like to talk with the UFC about potentially representing the promotion in some way outside of the Octagon:

” [I] kinda wanted to finish my contract up and have a talk with Dana [White] about either representing [the UFC] in some capacity outside of the cage in working for the UFC,” he said. “That was what I was going to speak with them about, not necessarily fighting again.”

Michael Bisping Explains Why He Wants Dan Henderson Rematch

After upsetting Luke Rockhold with a vicious first round knockout at June 4’s UFC 199 to become the undisputed 185-pound champion, Michael Bisping turned some heads when he expressed interest in first defending his title against 45-year-old No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, but “The Count” was granted his wish, as the bout was recently confirmed for

After upsetting Luke Rockhold with a vicious first round knockout at June 4’s UFC 199 to become the undisputed 185-pound champion, Michael Bisping turned some heads when he expressed interest in first defending his title against 45-year-old No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, but “The Count” was granted his wish, as the bout was recently confirmed for October 8’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England.

The two first met back at 2009’s UFC 100 where Henderson scored one of the most iconic knockouts of all-time. With that being said, it’s clear that Bisping is out for revenge, but that isn’t the only reason he requested the fight.

Recently speaking on the matter, Bisping reminisced on the now infamous testosterone-replacement-therapy (TRT) era, saying that he didn’t even know what it was or that “Hendo” was on it. The substance has since been banned, but “The Count” feels as if Henderson had an unfair advantage the first time around:

“That is the main reason [why I want to fight him] — because, I didn’t even know TRT existed. I had no idea he was on it or that it even existed, so I went into that fight not knowing that,” he admitted to DailyStar. “Of course, now TRT is not allowed and he’s still fighting so that was all bullshit that clearly proves it was bullshit and system manipulation.”

Despite his reasoning, Bisping has received criticism for asking for the fight due to Henderson’s age and the fact that he’s lost three of his last five, but “The Count” says that the former Olympian is still knocking people out:

“I know he’s an older man now, but I still owe him one,” he said. “He’s still knocking people out so let’s do it.”

Henderson is indeed coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard this past June. How do you see the rematch between him and Bisping playing out?
