Frankie Edgar Breaks Down UFC 200 Loss To Jose Aldo

Two time UFC featherweight title challenger Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar is just days away from being a part of the most historic card in UFC history, when he takes on Jeremy ‘Lil Heathen’ Stephens at UFC 205 from the Madison Square Garden arena.

Prior to getting booked to collide with Stephens in New York, however, Edgar took on former longtime featherweight champ Jose Aldo at UFC 200 for the interim 145-pound title. Edgar was picked apart by Aldo throughout the 25-minute contest and was again unable to solve the puzzle that is Jose Aldo Jr.

Edgar recently spoke to FOX Sports to discuss the loss to Aldo, stating that he didn’t make the proper adjustments when he shared the Octagon against the Brazilian champion:

“I just didn’t make the proper adjustments. Everything we worked on in camp, I thought I did well. I came forward, I brought pressure, I avoided the jab, I avoided the leg kicks, but he was just kind of playing smarter than me. That’s how I’ll say it. I was there kind of looking to throw, looking to fight and he was looking to move and avoid me,” Edgar told FOX Sports.

“I feel like I should have recognized that and I didn’t. I was kind of stuck on what we worked on in camp, which isn’t a bad thing, but sometimes you have to make those adjustments in the middle of the fight and I feel that’s something I do really well. So I’m disappointed that I was a little stubborn in this fight and didn’t change my attack.”

Aldo’s performance against Edgar was conservative to say the least, but the former lightweight champion won’t bash ‘Scarface’ for ‘point fighting’ in their meeting in order to get his hand raised when it was all said and done:

“I think he was playing a game and it’s smart on him,” Edgar said. “I don’t really talk down on point fighters. We go in there to get our hand raised and he got his hand raised so I can’t be mad at him for that. I should have recognized that though.”

While Edgar is the type of fighter to remember the losses more than the wins, he won’t dwell on his performance against Aldo heading into his clash with Stephens. The best way for ‘The Answer’ to move on for the loss is to put on a spectacular performance in ‘The Big Apple’ and continue onward towards his championship aspirations:

“This is what I’ve been thinking about ever since July 9, the night of my fight when I lost,” Edgar said. “I just want to go in there and erase everything. The best way to erase a loss is to go back in there and have a good fight and getting your hand raised. That’s my goal.

“I don’t think I’ll ever erase the loss completely. I remember the losses more than the wins, but a win on November 12 will definitely make it sting a lot less.”

As Edgar fixes his attention to the task at hand in the form of Jeremy Stephens, he respects his adversary’s fight-ending power that he has promised to use to knock Edgar out, but ‘The Answer’ says he’ll have something ready for that:

“I think he’s the same kind of guy,” Edgar said. “I feel he’s a little more well-rounded now. Back in the day, guys would be able to avoid standing up with him and find ways to win. Now he’s able to keep it standing up much more and he’s fighting at a higher caliber than he was at 155. He’s going to look to put me away and I’m not going to have to chase him at all.”

“Everybody says they’re going to knock me out and no one’s done it yet,” Edgar said. “All the power to him, I hope he comes and tries to and I’m going to have something ready for him.”

Edgar and Stephens are set to close out the card’s preliminary bouts, giving Edgar plenty of time to shower off and sit back to watch teammate Eddie Alvarez go to work against Conor McGregor in the main event of the evening:

“Of course, I think Eddie (Alvarez) is going to get the win (over Conor McGregor) and it might force him to come back down. I don’t think he’s going to come down. I think the weight’s too much for him to cut,” Edgar said.

For now Edgar won’t look at what is next for him after UFC 205, as his focus is strictly on Stephens for the time being, but he still has his hopes set on another featherweight title opportunity down the road:

“I’m not too concerned with what’s next. I know if I beat Jeremy, it’s going to put me in a good position to go and fight for that title again in the future. Winning takes care of everything.”

Edgar and Stephens will meet on the preliminary card of UFC 205 live on FS1, from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

As noted although it has yet to be announced publicly by the UFC themselves, the 185-pound debut of Rashad Evans against Tim Kennedy has been cancelled and won’t be part of the scheduled lineup for this Saturday’s UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor pay-per-view event in New York City.

According to reports by both ESPN.com and MMAFighting.com, the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was forced off the card by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) due to an issue with his medicals for the fight.

After the news broke on multiple MMA internet outlets on Tuesday afternoon, Evans spoke with MMAFighting.com, confirming the fact that his fight with Kennedy is off, while elaborating a bit on what led to the fight being scratched. He wouldn’t, however, reveal what the specific medical issue was that is keeping the NYSAC from allowing him to fight this weekend.

“I’m disappointed,” Evans said. “I’m healthy. I don’t want anyone worrying about me. I’m fine, physically speaking. Never felt better. It’s just the commission and their rules. I guess they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to this.”

“Man, I had something special for Tim,” Evans said of his plans for his Middleweight debut against Kennedy at what is expected to be the biggest event in UFC history this Saturday. This doesn’t change the fact that I want to fight. This doesn’t change anything for me as far as fighting.”

This Saturday’s (November 12, 2016) blockbuster UFC 205 card from New York City received its first casualty earlier today when former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans was removed from his middleweight debut against Tim Kennedy due to issues with his medicals.

Details were scarce about the specific details of his removal, and remain so when Evans would not disclose the injury, but according to the popular star, he was and is still more than ready to fight.

Yet some “irregular findings” on an October 19 MRI forced the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) to call the bout off. In a response to MMA Fighting, Evans affirmed he is healthy, but the commission simply had a no tolerance policy on issues like this:

“I’m disappointed. I’m healthy. I don’t want anyone worrying about me. I’m fine, physically speaking. Never felt better. It’s just the commission and their rules. I guess they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to this.”

It’s hard to argue with the former champion, who wants to fight as soon as December, based on this Instagram photo released by UFC President Dana White that features “Suga” arguably looking more ripped and ready than he ever has:

With Evans clearly in excellent shape halfway to the middleweight limit of 185 pounds, ‘Suga’ offered the prediction that he was going to take it to Kennedy, adding that his desire to fight had not changed and he would come back:

“Man, I had something special for Tim. This doesn’t change the fact that I want to fight. This doesn’t change anything for me as far as fighting. In life, if it ain’t one thing it’s another. I won’t get beat down by this.”

Evans Medically Pulled From Fight Against Tim Kennedy at UFC 205

Rashad Evans was planning to snap a 2 fight losing streak as well as make a welterweight debut at UFC 205. Going against fellow veteran Tim Kennedy in New York, this was suppose to his second coming out party after his first were rained on by Ryan Bader and then abruptly by Glover Teixeira. But alas, the hits just keep on coming, the former light heavyweight champion will have his dreams halted once again with recent news of his medical issues pulling him from the card.

When it rains, it pours.

According to Evans he received news from the Nevada State Athletic Commision on October 19th saying an MRI revealed “irregular findings”. After that he was said to undergo further testing which Evans says he passed. He thought he was in the clear, and then he received an email earlier today.

“I’m disappointed,” Evans told MMAFighting.com. “I’m healthy. I don’t want anyone worrying about me. I’m fine, physically speaking. Never felt better. It’s just the commission and their rules. I guess they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to this.”

Evans however is not letting this get him down, he says this makes him even more determined to fight, and will not be deterred by the set back.

“This doesn’t change the fact that I want to fight. This doesn’t change anything for me as far as fighting.”

“In life, if it ain’t one thing it’s another,” he said. “I won’t get beat down by this.”

So what does this do to the 205 picture? While definitely not one of the top fights, most mma fans were emotionally invested. This leaves two middleweight in Jacare Souza and now Tim Kennedy without a dance partner, does it make sense to match these two up? Training wise yes, both these men were preparing for a middleweight bout on the same card, though their opponents were vastly different. If they still want to go for the pay day and the chance to fight on the first NYC card, I for one will not stop them. However, from a ranking standpoint it doesn’t make any sense, at least not for Jacare. Beating Tim Kennedy means nothing as he could potentially be one fight away from a title shot. But you know how it is in the UFC, if Dana White calls, it’s probably best to answer.

What do you guys think of the recent news? Would you care for Kennedy vs. Souza matchup or is it water under the bridge at this point?
