Gegard Mousasi Would ‘Love’ To Fight Anderson Silva After UFC 204

The UFC’s middleweight division is currently quite crowded.

The title is set to be defended tomorrow night (October 8, 2016) in the main event of UFC 204, as Michael Bisping meets Dan Henderson. No. 2-ranked Chris Weidman will then face off with No. 4-ranked Yoel Romero at November 12’s UFC 205, while No. 1-ranked former champion Luke Rockhold will meet No. 3-ranked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza on November 26, 2016 in Melbourne, Australia.

One middleweight fight that may be flying under the radar, however, will also take place tomorrow night when No. 9-ranked Gegard Mousasi meets No. 5-ranked Vitor Belfort. While a win over Belfort would indeed move him up the rankings, Mousasi knows he’s still multiple fights away from a shot at gold given the ‘busy’ nature of the division:

“It’s going to get me higher (in the rankings) but it’s not going to do anything different for me,” Mousasi told the Fight Society podcast recently. “You have now “Jacare” (Souza) against (Luke) Rockhold, (Chris) Weidman against Yoel Romero so those are guys that can easily fight for the belt. Those guys are ahead of me.

“After beating Vitor, it’s just another guy I have to face. The title shot seems far away for me so I’m not thinking of it but it will come. After this victory, I will be a step closer to that.”

With that being said, Mousasi plans to get by Belfort before hopefully taking on another Brazilian legend in former longtime champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva:

“The only one that doesn’t have a fight is Anderson Silva. I would love to fight him. Those are fights, fighting legends, fighting big names. If you can get a win over those guys, it’s on your record and it’s going to stay that way. Those are the fights that make sense. Those are the fights people are going to remember you for if you beat Vitor or Anderson or Dan Henderson, guys like that.”

Silva last competed at July 9’s UFC 200 when he suffered a decision loss to 205-pound champion Daniel Cormier in a bout that he accepted on just two days notice. If Mousasi is indeed successful tomorrow night, a bout between him and Silva would not only make sense, but it’d likely be quite exciting.

Would you be interested in seeing these two face off in the near future?

2016 has been a crazy year for fans of MMA. As always the UFC had the top shelf offering of all the major promotions, and they did so with a stream of high quality cards. At the zenith of the UFC’s pay-per-view draws this year were Conor McGregor and his rival Nate Diaz. UFC 196 and UFC 202 ranked in the top three biggest cards in the promotion’s history. McGregor vs. Diaz 2 smashed the bar set by UFC 100 with a cool 1.6 million buys. Was it any surprise the UFC put McGregor in against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 200?

Following his string of successful cards, albeit one with a loss, the charismatic Irishman was injected in to the UFC’s New York debut without hesitance. One topic that’s been hotly debated ahead of UFC 205 is the potential effect on the direction of MMA moving forward. The apparent disrespect from the UFC towards Jose Aldo has led to the interim champion retiring, and the decision to put McGregor ahead of the killers row at 155 has alienated many top contenders.

McGregor vs. Alvarez

Looking like it could well be the biggest card of all-time, UFC 205 is pivotal for so many reasons. The fact McGregor will not be stripped of the 145-pound title to compete against Alvarez is another key factor in this debate. The Irish star will look to become the first ever champion to hold two UFC belts in different weight classes at the same time. After the big announcement of the UFC 205 card came the teaser of McGregor’s own ‘left field’ announcement.

UFC president Dana White said Conor had some ‘personal issues,’ and would make a big announcement out of ‘left field’ following UFC 205. This has led to massive speculation, one opinion being that McGregor’s girlfriend has fell pregnant. Another guess is that ‘The Notorious’ will retire, or maybe take a year off. With so much riding on this one historic bout in Madison Square Garden on November 12, check out Five Possible Outcomes From Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez…

McGregor Defeats Alvarez, Retires

This future involves Conor McGregor winning the lightweight title, then calling it quits as a two-weight UFC champion. Complications aplenty would arise from ‘The Notorious’ riding off in to the sunset with two belts on his back. Obviously the issue of who fights for two vacated belts would be complicated enough, but in this outcome there’s the ‘McGregor shadow’ to consider.

‘The Notorious,’ although retired, would forever shadow the current crop of contenders in both divisions. This isn’t to say that both weight classes wouldn’t move on in time, but look at the scenario with Daniel Cormier right now. ‘DC’ may have lost in his bid against Jon Jones, but by no fault of his own was fighting for the vacant strap against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187. ‘Bones’ was stripped of the belt and has been pulled once again from the running due to a failed drug test. All this, and Cormier still receives criticism as champion. Imagine the impact on 155 and 145 if this were to be the outcome at UFC 205.

Anthony Pettis ‘Ready To Go’ For Big Fight With Jose Aldo

Many fighters have criticized featherweight champion Conor McGregor for taking fights outside of his division instead of defending his title, but former lightweight champion turned featherweight contender Anthony “Showtime” Pettis isn’t bothered by it. Many fighters have criticized featherweight champion Conor McGregor for taking fights outside of his division instead of defending his title, but former lightweight champion turned featherweight contender Anthony “Showtime” Pettis isn’t bothered by it. In fact, “Showtime” attempted to do the same when he was sporting 155-pound gold:

“I was trying to do that when I was champ. I called out Jose Aldo right after I won the belt at lightweight, it was supposed to happen, it didn’t happen for reasons,” Pettis said on a recent appearance on “UFC Tonight”.

“I think right now, Conor he’s doing his thing. He’s a guy that’s winning fights, he’s knocking guys out, he’s fighting guys like Nate Diaz but he’s winning fights, what can you say.”

Aldo, on the other hand, isn’t too pleased with the way McGregor is conducting his business. After being knocked out by the Irishman in just 13 seconds last December, “Scarface” bounced back with a dominant victory over Frankie Edgar last July to become the interim 145-pound champion. With the win, Aldo thought that he had been guaranteed the next shot at McGregor, but the “Notorious” one recently signed on to fight lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at November 12’s UFC 205.

In the wake of the news, Aldo requested his release from the UFC, and said that he was considering retirement. With McGregor having his hands full, Pettis said that he’s ‘ready to go’ for a ‘big’ fight with Aldo, a fight that was scheduled to take place years ago, but ultimately fell through:

“If Jose Aldo wants it, I’m ready to go. I think he’s more frustrated than actually trying to retire. I don’t think he’s going to retire where he’s at right now. He obviously wants that (Conor) fight back, Conor’s busy, I’m there,” said Pettis.

“I think that’s the fight that makes sense for him. I know he wants to sell pay-per-views and I think my name with his name makes a big fight.”

Pettis recently made his 145-pound debut with an impressive win over Charles Oliveira, landing him at No. 6 in the division. “Showtime” undoubtedly deserves a big fight, and a scrap with Aldo would be highly exciting, although it’d be difficult to leapfrog No. 3-ranked Max Holloway, a man on a nine fight win streak.

If Aldo sticks around, who should he face next?
