The UFC’s unusual tactic paid off big on Christmas Eve this past weekend as the promotion aired its latest pay-per-view event, UFC 206, for free on big FOX.

The broadcast replayed the event which took place on December 10, 2016 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The version that aired on FOX was only two hours long and featured selected fights from the event.

UFC 206 on FOX averaged 4.7 million viewers, with a 1.6/6 Nielsen rating in the highly-coveted 18-49 demographic, which was the highest rated broadcast across all of the four major American television networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX) during the 8-10 PM ET primetime slot. The rating greatly benefited from the late NFL on FOX games, as they served as a lead-in to its 8 PM ET timeslot.

The four fights featured were Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone vs. Matt Brown, Cub Swanson vs. Doo Ho Choi, and John Makdessi vs. Lando Vannata. Last weekend marked the first time that the UFC had ever packaged a re-broadcast of a pay-per-view for the FOX network. This was a good sign for the UFC, as the UFC 206 PPV reportedly only drew 150,000 PPV buys, which is a low count for the largest MMA promotion in the world. Fans shouldn’t be surprised if the UFC does this again next year. However, they will have to luck out on whatever event they plan to air being a great event with a ton of action.

The UFC returns to television this Friday night (Dec. 30, 2016) in a big way as former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey returns to the world famous Octagon when she challenges current titleholder Amanda Nunes for the title at UFC 207. The prelims for the event will air on FOX Sports 1 while the main card will air on pay-per-view (PPV).

It’s a very Merry Christmas for the UFC and the Fox Network this morning. According to reports, the overnight ratings for the UFC 206 rebroadcast on the main Fox network Christmas Eve are in, and the network scored big. Approximately 4.689 million viewers tuned in for the broadcast. Keep in mind that overnight ratings are subject to change, and the final number may be adjusted later. These ratings also do not take into consideration DVR viewership, which can add viewers after the fact.

Either way, it’s great news for Fox and the UFC. UFC 206 took place December 10th in Toronto, and the much-maligned card wound up being an over achiever that produced the UFC Fight of the Year in DooHo Choi vs. Cub Swanson. Matt Brown vs. Cowboy Cerrone, the night’s co-main event, also made the cut for the UFC’s Top 10 fights of the year.

In the main event, Max Holloway scored a TKO victory over Anthony Pettis to secure the interim Featherweight championship.

The importance of this event performing well on Fox cannot be understated, as UFC owners WME-IMG are currently in the early stages of shopping around for a new television deal. Whether the promotion remains with Fox, moves elsewhere, or splits content between networks, ratings will likely be more important than ever over the next year.

As a point of comparison, UFC on Fox 1, featuring a title fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos, averaged 5.7 million viewers. However recent Fox cards have brought in 2 to 3 million viewers a show. That a previously recorded show having already aired on PPV could bring in such a high number is remarkable.

This Christmas Eve, FOX will bring you two hours of action from UFC 206 in a special broadcast.

The program airs at 8 p.m. ET and features four of the top fights from the recent card from Toronto.

In a press release sent out, credit for the decision goes to UFC president Dana White, as Max Holloway-Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone-Matt Brown, Cub Swanson-Dooho Choi and John Makdessi-Lando Vannata will be shown.

Many have given Swanson-Choi the “Fight of the Year,” while the Makdessi-Vannata bout features a “Knockout of the Year” candidate, as does Cerrone’s finish of Brown.

It’s difficult to tell if all of each fight will be replayed, or just pieces of the action.

No. 5-ranked surging welterweight contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone extended his win streak at 170-pounds to four with a brutal head kick knockout over Matt Brown in the co-main event of last weekend’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 from Toronto, Canada. After the bout, Cerrone made it clear that he wanted to return to action rather quickly and fight at Jan. 28 at UFC on FOX 23 from Denver, Colorado.

Cerrone is unsurprisingly willing to take on any and all 170 pounders and in typical “Cowboy” fashion he issued a challenge to all fighters in the division via his official Twitter account earlier today:

Later on, Cerrone actually received a response, as No. 15-ranked Jorge Masvidal said that he’s already been contacting the UFC brass regarding his interest in the bout:

“Cowboy” also made it clear that he’s ready to clash with “Gamebred” next month:

Masvidal has won two straight bouts and is coming off of a TKO victory over Jake Ellenberger earlier this month. Prior to beating Brown, Cerrone had scored stoppage victories over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote and Rick Story.

Would you like see Cerrone and Masvidal face off at UFC on FOX 23?

He may be campaigning for yet another shot at 170 pounds, but Kelvin Gastelum may be adding another top-ranked middleweight to his record early next year.

The rising 185-pound fighter, who was forced to go up to middleweight after he badly missed the welterweight limit of 171 pounds once again prior to his scheduled bout with Donald Cerrone at November 12’s UFC 205, promptly took a short-notice bout with longtime veteran Tim Kennedy and parlayed it into the biggest win of his MMA career.

According to a report from Combate, however, Gastelum may have the opportunity to top even his win over Kennedy if rumors prove true he will face former UFC champ Vitor Belfort at the March 11, 2017 Fight Night event from Fortaleza, Brazil. The rumored bout is the only one to have been discussed for the card.

If it indeed proves true, Belfort will have an uphill climb to get back to the nigh-indestructible form he once exhibited during a torrid, TRT-enhanced run to a title shot in 2013. Belfort has lost two straight and three of his last fights by TKO, absorbing one-sided defeats to Ronaldo Souza and Gegard Mousasi at UFC 198 and UFC 204 this year. He seemed to hint at retirement following his loss to “The Dreamcatcher” in Manchester in early October, but rapidly backtracked on the a cryptic social media post to say he would fight on.

Putting the proverbial train back on the tracks will be a challenge against Gastelum, however, The Ultimate fighter (TUF) 17 winner whose only losses came to current welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley and Neil Magny, each by split decision. His weight management issues his most glaring obstacle, Gastelum also owns wins over former welterweight champion John Hendricks and former middleweight title contender Nate Marquardt.

Securing a win over a time-tested legend like Belfort would certainly plant Gastelum in the thick of the talented middleweight talent pool, making a third run at welterweight – where he’s missed weight three times – extremely unlikely.

Stay tuned for more news and updates about this bout and the March 11 card from Fortaleza.
