Holly Holm will have to get her revenge on Germaine de Randamie the old-fashioned way.

After it was revealed ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ would appeal her highly controversial unanimous decision loss to de Randamie in the main event of February 11’s UFC 208 from Brooklyn, New York, Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez has informed MMA Fighting that their appeal has been denied by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).

Criticism and controversy arose for the newly-crowned UFC women’s featherweight champion de Randamie when she hit Holm with some powerful punches seconds after the bell in both rounds two and three and referee Todd Anderson failed to take a point. The inexperienced official appeared to overcompensate by stepping in between the two fighters after the fourth round, but the damage was done and he’s come under extreme scrutiny as a result.

De Randamie has since issued an apology to Holm claiming she’s not a dirty fighter, and even went as far as offering her an immediate rematch for the title, an odd situation given ‘The Iron Lady’ stated she needed some time off for surgery when faced with the prospect of facing Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino in her next fight.

Holm’s team was accepting of the NYSAC’s decision, with Fresquez telling MMA Fighting they would move on to hope for the rematch de Randamie offered:

“We respect their decision and will not seek anything further, except a rematch from Germaine.”

Holm wasn’t as forgiving during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, however, noting that while many may think she’s whining and complaining about a fight she did little to win, de Randamie should own up to the fouls committed, which were intentional in Holm’s eyes:

“I’m not trying to be like a wuss about it and whine. That’s definitely not what I’m trying to do. I think that’s a hard spot for me. A lot of people keep saying, well, she hit you after the bell, how do you feel? Well, I’m a fighter. I’m not going to sit here and whine about it and complain. There’s a lot of things I could have done.

“At least own it. She knows she did it on purpose and one of them definitely rocked me.”

It remains to be seen if the rematch between de Randamie and Holm will come to fruition, but it’s hard to imagine a plausible scenario where anyone but Cyborg fights for the championship in the fledging division next.

Ian McCall’s troubled path back to the Octagon continues.

Since his last Octagon appearance, a 2015 unanimous decision loss to John Lineker, McCall has had six different match-ups fall through due to various reasons. It looked as though we’d finally see the former flyweight title challenger return to fighting action at UFC 208 when his originally planned opponent, Neil Seery, was replaced by UFC newcomer Jarred Brooks.

The day of the fight, however, McCall was unfortunately pulled from the bout after he fell ill and was hospitalized for gastrointestinal issues. ‘Uncle Creepy’ detailed the whole ordeal leading up to his hospitalization during a recent appearance of Joe Rogan’s podcast The Joe Rogan Experience (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I’ve never made weight that easy in my entire career. You ask anybody, usually you stop drinking water 24 hours out from weigh-ins. I cut weight Thursday night and it was going so well that I had five glasses of ice water throughout the night. So then I figured I could eat a little bit. So I tried to eat a little bit of salad and I threw that up. But I figured that was just the dressing or something messing my stomach up. So I had at least a cup of almonds, about five cups of water, I cut the rest in the morning and then when I was trying to gain weight back my body wouldn’t. I couldn’t hold on to anything. I kept throwing up everything…

“By the next morning, I had still only gained five pounds. Everything I tried to eat, I threw up. And I was throwing up in front of all the other fighters. Every single chance we ended up having to be in a group in public, I ended up f**king throwing up.”

McCall pleaded with UFC officials and doctors to let him fight regardless of the illness, but they wouldn’t budge. For a moment it looked as though McCall’s life could be on the line and in need of gallbladder surgery. After further evaluation, however, the situation turned out not to be as dire as originally thought:

“I asked them, I’m like. ‘Listen, just let me fight…’ And they looked at me like, ‘No dude, you need to go to the hospital.’ Then they were gonna do emergency gallbladder surgery which they didn’t have to do thank god. This whole thing scared the s**t out of me. When the doctor says, ‘Oh well you could die, you never know,’ I’m like, what the f**k do you mean you never know?”

Doctors first believed that McCall could be suffering from the effects of gall stones, but after more advanced testing that theory was ruled out. Tests are still being run to try and determine what exactly went wrong with McCall, who was finally able to hold food down for the first time since his weight cut just last week:

“[My gallbladder] was super shrunk – contracted. I guess [from the dehydration]. And then they saw shadowing and some other stuff [on the tests] and they thought I had gall stones… Then they did a more advanced version of the ultrasound and they didn’t see anything so they didn’t have to do [surgery]. So basically we’re just running tests, been running tests all week.

“I’m still skinny. I went home a day later than I was supposed to go home and I was still under 135 pounds – 132 pounds. I wasn’t able to hold food down until Tuesday. My body just f**kin’ failed me.”

Do you think we’ll ever see ‘Uncle Creepy’ fight again?

For years, fight fans drooled over the idea of a potential super fight between former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Invicta FC champion Cris Cyborg Justino.

At one point, it was clear that Rousey and Justino were the best in the world in regards to women’s MMA, but in the fight game, fans always want to know who the true king, or queen in this case, of the jungle is. The weight disparity between the two, however, has always proved to be too much of a barrier to the fight taking place.

Rousey has since brutally fallen from her throne, but Cyborg has indeed made her way over to the UFC. Making her Octagon debut at May 2016’s UFC 198, Justino scored a vicious first round knockout victory over Leslie Smith in a 140-pound catchweight bout. She followed that up with yet another impressive stoppage victory over Lina Lansberg this past September in her native Brazil with the bout once again taking place at 140 pounds.

It was clear that Cyborg’s brutal knockout power transferred over to the Octagon quite nicely. It was also clear that she was a legitimate draw and a legitimate star, but it was even clearer that she would never fight at 135 pounds. Weight once again proved to be an issue as she struggled to make the 140-pound catchweight limit.

The UFC, being the money-driven business it is, however, knew Cyborg was a valuable asset and an asset worth keeping, which is why they created a women’s featherweight division. The inaugural female 145-pound champion was crowned in the main event of last weekend’s (Feb. 11, 2017) UFC 208 from Brooklyn, New York, but oddly enough, Justino was not involved in the fight.

Instead, former bantamweight champion Holly Holm took on Dutch striker Germaine de Randamie. Shortly after the bout was announced, Cyborg was flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation. Given that she has dealt with performance-enhancing-drug issues in the past, few were surprised that Justino was flagged, and it then made sense why she wasn’t a part of UFC 208’s main event.

De Randamie went on to win a somewhat controversial decision over Holm, but the division was left in a clutter. It had a champion who few felt was the best featherweight in the world, and a clear lack of contenders.

Yesterday (Feb. 17, 2017), however, it was announced that Justino had a received a retroactive TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption), meaning that she was eligible to compete in the UFC immediately.

With that being said, it’s clear that de Randamie vs. Justino is the fight to make, despite the fact that “The Iron Lady” said she may need hand surgery when asked about fighting the Brazilian slugger.

Either way, the fight world will likely get to see what it’s been waiting so long for: Cris Cyborg competing in the UFC at her natural weight. In other words, the uncrowned featherweight queen should finally get the chance to capture her crown.

Will she seize the opportunity?

Swan Song

Last weekend Phillipe Nover dropped another close decision to Rick Glenn on the undercard of UFC 208. The loss was however was bittersweet, even though Nover didn’t get the W, he did get to realize a lifelong dream of fighting in front of his home crowd of Brooklyn, NY. This wednesday Nover decided it was one loss too many and gracefully bowed out from the sport via instagram.

Nover was one of those guys that had all the potential but for some reason things just never came together. A superstar in the TUF house, Nover won all three fights by submission only losing to Efrain Escudero in the TUF 8 finale.

The 33 year old Filipino grappler was originally cut from the UFC back in 2010, but fought his way back by winning five out of six fights in Bellator and smaller circuits. He began his second stint in 2015 only to go 1-3 with all his losses coming via decision. Although a durable fighter, many say his achilles heel was his inability to finish fights.  Either way, Nover came to fight every time he stepped into the octagon and no one could deny that he was a true warrior. We wish him the best of luck in all future endeavours.

Do you guys think this was the right move or did Nover sell himself short?

Anderson Silva has had enough of the critics following his controversial UFC 208 win over Derek Brunson.

After the longtime former champion ‘Spider’ skated by via unanimous decision to score his first official win since October 2012, Brunson has gone as far as officially appealing the loss after saying he had ‘outclassed the greatest of all time but got robbed.’ Many MMA fans have echoed the sentiment, and the majority of media members scoring the fight cageside gave it to Brunson.

But the MMA legend wants his doubters to put his body of work in perspective, posting a lengthy response on Facebook where he declared he’s the ‘best in the world’:

“Nowadays it’s easy to say that the fight is my root, there is a lot of people who talk about fighting and do not know what it says. So when you go up in the octagon, first look who I am, respect who got where I came from. I arrived very well, without disrespecting anyone, with much struggle and pride in the chest.

So, you who talk too much, find out first who I am and what I did in this sport.

Many people find me arrogant and overbearing? I can be it and more, not because I am considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. No, no, it’s my feats, that’s what I really did for this sport. I broke barriers all over the world where I fought, Pride, Shooto, Mecca and other events that these speakers have never heard of and do not know what they are like. I am from a different era, when had no weight limit or time limit. I really fought for passion, not for money or fame. Speakers and frustrated fighters, who read this text, I can be arrogant, arrogant and much more than that, I am Anderson Silva, who made and makes a difference in sports.

I’m not afraid and I do not flee fighting, I defended the belt for 10 years, none of the last champions managed to defend for more than 3 fights.

So thank you to all who like me and those who do not like me, they will have to accept that Anderson da Silva, The spider, is a fact and can not change. I’m the best in the world, yes! To the joy of many and the sorrow of others.

I can only say that we will soon see ourselves in the octagons of life.”

While the stats would certainly suggest Silva would have a tough time winning on the judges’ cards at UFC 208 after Brunson landed several more strikes and got the only takedowns of the bout, it’s also hard to deny Silva’s body of work that includes UFC records for most consecutive wins and title defenses.

While that obviously shouldn’t come into play in terms of judging one sole fight, Brunson suggested that the judges – in addition to the New York City crowd – were awestruck by “The Spider,” and that’s what lead to them giving him the nod.

Whether or not that’s true, Silva wants his and all fight fans to remember what he’s accomplished, and that he can still hang with top middleweights today.
