Germaine de Randamie may be the new and first-ever UFC women’s featherweight champion, but her history-making win over former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm (watch full video highlights here) was marred by some highly controversial strikes that came after the bell in not one but two rounds in the main event of last night’s UFC 208 from Brooklyn.

‘The Iron Lady’ appeared to rock Holm significantly seconds after the buzzer went off in round two, and many thought that would earn a warning from the ref. But that only came from the official after de Randamie unloaded a sizable combo on ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ after the alarm sounded in the third round, after which de Randamie immediately acknowledged her fault.

Many have criticized and are still very critical of the officiating, which came from a referee inexperienced in main event title fights in the second-ever major UFC event in New York, including some piled-on bashing from UFC President Dana White. Randamie also didn’t do herself any favors by revealing she would have surgery on her hand to fix an injury suffered three fights ago instead of fighting Crsitiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino if she gets cleared from her recent USADA suspension as expected.

She also didn’t show up for the post-fight press conference to truly arrive on the scene as the first women’s 145-pound, yet still, de Randamie offered an apology to Holm for the late punches in her post-fight interview:

“It wasn’t meant for me to hit her after the bell. It was in the heat of the moment. I apologize. I’m not like that.”

De Randamie addressed the outcome of the fight, which most fans seemed to have belonged to Holm even without a point that should have taken from her. In her opinion, Holm simply didn’t come to fight aside from her third-round head kick, and that was evident in her constant but ultimately unsuccessful clinching:

“It was a close fight. She [caught] me in the third round with a head kick. It was close, but I came to fight and she didn’t want to fight me. I’m a brawler. I want to fight. I hoped she was going to fight with me. Holly is a tremendous champion. I truly respect her. But I love to brawl, I love to fight. Clinching is not my game. But whatever.”

De Randamie will now move on to an uncertain future as the initial champion with most fans believing ‘Cyborg’ to simply be the uncrowned champion of the freshest (but more shallow) women’s landscape.

And it might be quite awhile before we get to see Justino prove that against de Randamie.

Legendary former champion Anderson Silva made a (somewhat) triumphant return to the octagon against Derek Brunson in the co-main event of last night’s (February 11, 2017) UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, although it wasn’t without a fair share of controversy.

‘The Spider’ was able to take home a unanimous decision on all three judges’ scorecards, including a highly questionable 30-27 sweep on one. Many fans and media members alike felt that Brunson was able to outwork Silva by landing crisp uppercuts in the clinch and scoring the only two takedowns of the bout despite missing on nine other attempts.

For his efforts, Silva was able to land some stinging counters of his own, and he had a few brief moments where his usual fun-loving self came out, but overall it seemed his output was again low and somewhat tentative for the once seemingly indestructible champion who knocked out each and every opponent he met. He did control the octagon (something that’s not supposed to count under the new scoring system) and easily defended most of Brunson’s takedowns, but the stats alone favored Brunson in every major category.

What was your view? Did Silva do enough to get the win last night?

The UFC now has a women’s featherweight champion, and her name is Germaine de Randamie.

In the main event of last night’s (Sat. February 11, 2017) UFC 208 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, De Randamie took home a controversial unanimous decision win over ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ to become the first female 145-pound champ in promotion history. During two separate occasions ‘The Iron Lady’ hit Holm with strikes after the bell and did not have a point taken away by the referee.

All three of the judges’ scorecards read 48-47 for De Randamie, but had the point been deducted the contest would have resulted in a draw; with no champion being crowned.

During the post-fight press conference (quotes via FOX Sports) Holm expressed that she felt as though she took three rounds of the contest, but admitted she was slow to get into a rhythm while her counterpart started off strong:

“I felt like she started a little strong and I thought I had the better of her the last three rounds,” Holm said. “I had her dropped twice. I know what my capabilities are, I didn’t do as much damage as I wanted to do when I had her on the cage. But as far as controlling the pace and controlling the fight, so yeah the fight could have gone either way.

“I felt like I had three rounds. I also had her rocked twice and didn’t capitalize on it and that’s my own fault.”

In regards to the late shots by De Randamie, Holm feels as though they were intentional and is surprised that a point wasn’t taken after the second incident:

“A lot of times with the first one they give a warning. That’s kind of normal. I wouldn’t expect them to take a point after the first one, even though it was intentional. Then the second time, you’d think at that point they’d do something but I’m one of those people that feels I should not have let her done it anyway. Yes, it’s after the bell, I heard the bell, I stopped. It wasn’t like the last punch of a combination when the bell rang. Like it was intentional, it was after the bell,” Holm said. “Those were some of her best shots of the whole night after the bell and I don’t know how the judges saw that.

“If they see that as points for her then what can you do? It’s like I should have kept fighting, too.”

With the loss last night Holm is now 0-3 since her monumental win over Ronda Rousey in 2015. Holm believes the controversy surrounding her bout with De Randamie warrants an immediate rematch, but is open to stepping into the Octagon with anyone the UFC throws at her next:

“If they see that as points for her then what can you do? It’s like I should have kept fighting, too. I’m sitting in a spot where my last fights I’m 0-3,” Holm said. “I’m going to take whatever they’ll give me.”

With Cyborg waiting in the wings for the next crack at the 145-pound title as well, who do you think will challenge the new featherweight champ for her throne first?
