UFC 209 went down last night (Sat., March 4, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the main event featured a welterweight title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson. Woodley ended up retaining his title via majority decision, but it was a controversial outcome at best, especially given the fact that one judge scored the fight a draw.

Commenting on the decision, Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) director Bob Bennett implied that judges should be able to decide on a winner:

“If you’re a top-notch, A-plus judge, you should be able to discern through the scoring criteria who wins the fight, even if it’s razor thin,” Bennett said (Via MMAFighting). “Does a 10-10 round come up? Yes, but in the three years — almost three years — that I’ve been the executive director, we have not had a 10-10 round. And I think it’s incumbent upon the judges to be on top of their game and be able to pick a winner in that round. One effective strike or kick can determine who wins a round.”

The judge who scored the bout a draw was Sal D’Amato and he also scored the final round a 10-8 for Woodley, which Bennett didn’t agree with:

“The one judge that had it 10-8 — we went over it in the debriefing — and that 10-8 was unacceptable,” Bennett said. “Not that it would have affected the outcome of the fight, but just to share it with you. We strive to do the best we can, but we don’t always succeed and that judge should have scored that round 10-9.

“He just missed it and usually he’s spot on. But thank god it didn’t affect the overall outcome of the fight.”

Who did you score the fight for?

UFC 209 almost lost another pivotal match-up last night (Sat. March 4, 2017).

Yesterday’s pay-per-view (PPV) main card kicked off with a massive heavyweight clash between No. 3-ranked Alistair Overeem and No. 8-ranked Mark Hunt. Overeem was able to score a massive third-round knockout win over ‘The Super Samoan’, but according to Dana White, the former heavyweight title challenger almost didn’t make it to the Octagon.

White crashed Overeem’s post-fight presser segment to throw praise on ‘The Reem’ for powering through a case of food poisoning and following through on his word to compete on the already injury-riddled card (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Did you know that he was sick,” White said, taking the microphone from Overeem. “So, he’s been in the hospital for 24 hours. Food poisoning. Throwing up and all the other pleasantries of food poisoning for 24 hours. He was in the hospital, brought him home, and we had to bring him back to the hospital. They had to fill him with bags of fluids, and IVs, and at one point he was afraid to leave his room because he couldn’t stop throwing up and everything else.

“[He] did not want to turn down the fight. [He] still came out and fought tonight and knocked out Mark Hunt. So, and more to his credit, didn’t say one word about it in his interview, and obviously hasn’t said it here yet. I just came in to thank him and tell him how much I respect him.”

Overeem revealed he was given an IV at a local hospital to treat his condition, and took the necessary steps to get cleared for competition by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA):

“So, we went through all the steps necessary,” he said. “I got really sick. Yesterday at the weigh-ins I was out. I was like low energy. I mean, I put on my acting face looking angry, but I had zero energy, and if i felt today as I did yesterday I would not have been able to perform. But, I went to the hospital, got an IV, slept very good, took something to help me sleep. I could get some food in yesterday even before sleeping and recovered kind of okay, and [thought] yeah, we’re going to go for it. We’re going to do this.”

Dana White Doesn’t Know What To Do With Khabib

For the third time Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson’s highly-anticipated lightweight match-up was scrapped when ‘The Eagle’ was hospitalized the day before weigh-ins prior to last night’s (Sat. March 4, 2017) UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) card, and was unable to compete in his scheduled interim lightweight title match in the co-main event. UFC President Dana White

UFC President Dana White commented on Nurmagomedov’s inability to compete on last night’s card, stating that he doesn’t know what the future holds for the Russian grappling specialist (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“To be honest with you, Khabib fought (at UFC 205) in New York in November then here in this fight,” White said. “Two back-to-back weight cuts like that. I don’t know if he can make the weight or if he needs to get a better plan (or) dietician. Something.

“I don’t know (what he should do). He got within six pounds and was in really rough shape. He’s going to have to take some time to recover from this weight cut, and then I don’t know what to do.”

White also criticized Nurmagomedov’s team’s handling of the whole situation in which he was hospitalized. The UFC President claimed the fight may have been able to be saved had ‘The Eagle’s’ team contacted to UFC instead of trying to handle everything on their own:

“So what would have been different is if he had called Dr. (Jeff) Davidson or Briana (Mattison), the two who handle all the medical stuff for the UFC, they would have brought him right to the hospital,” White said. “Apparently he was treated horrible at (Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas). Shocker here in Vegas; that’s no shock. He should have gone to Valley Hospital (Medical Center). He should have been with (Dr. Davidson, who) would have taken him right in. They would have checked him right in and seen where he was.

“When you walk into just some random hospital here in Las Vegas and they see the guy and they tell him the weight cut, they just start filling him with fluids. That’s immediately what they do. They bring you in, they stick in the IV, and they start. (Dr. Davidson) would have checked his vitals, seen where he was. I’m not saying that the fight could have been saved, but maybe it could have. We’ve been in these positions before. This isn’t our first rodeo.”

White also stated that Nurmagomedov was experiencing pain in his kidney and liver areas, but doesn’t know the full extent of his condition. He did, however, note that it won’t affect Nurmagomedov in the long term, but recovery will take a bit of time:

“He was having pains either where your kidneys are or your liver or something – I don’t know the exact specifics, but he was having pains,” White said. “He looked terrible. I don’t think there was any real damage done to it. When I say damage, I mean longterm. It’s going to take him a little while to recover from this weight cut.”
