Can Will Brooks Regain His Momentum?

It wasn’t too long ago that the acquisition of Will Brooks by the UFC was viewed as a pretty big deal. Two fights and one loss later, it seems that fans have quieted down a bit where the former Bellator lightweight champion is concerned. As he sets his sights on victory once more ahead of UFC 210, the question remains: can Will Brooks regain his status as a prospect to watch?

It wasn’t too long ago that the acquisition of Will Brooks by the UFC was viewed as a pretty big deal. Two fights and one loss later, it seems that fans have quieted down a bit where the former Bellator lightweight champion is concerned. As he sets his sights on victory once more ahead of UFC 210, the question remains: can Will Brooks regain his status as a prospect to watch?

I’ve been pretty high on Will Brooks for some time now simply because of the way he’s blended different arts into his game. Karate fanatic that I am, it’s been pleasing to see Brooks implement a bit of the footwork of the traditional arts and look impressive doing it. The footwork made him hard to hit and also made his entries during takedowns buttery smooth. It’s the kind of thing you want to see from an athlete the likes of Brooks who has such dangerous wrestling and striking.

After his fight with an overweight Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira, we learned a few things about Will Brooks. While many will simply choose to focus on the outcome of the match up, the reality is that Brooks acquitted himself well during the bout, especially when you consider that his ribs were busted up pretty good after the opening frame. The second round was probably even more impressive for that fact. But those kind of injuries wear on a fighter and it would prove to be Will Brooks’ undoing.

Despite the loss, Will Brooks still has a ton of upside and has the natural ability and technique to make a fierce comeback.

This weekend will see Will Brooks return to action against another Oliveira, Charles Oliveira to be exact. Oliveira makes a return back to lightweight after a stint at featherweight and is likely to be the smaller man when he enters the cage against Brooks this Saturday. While it isn’t a sure thing, Brooks should have some advantages in this match up, specificlally his wrestling ability. But I have a sixth sense that we’re going to see Brooks out strike Oliveira and once again announce himself as one of the top lightweight prospects in the world.

Oliveira is a submission threat and does have some good Muay Thai skills. But with so much riding on this fight, with the opportunities to potentially secure another belt in the biggest organization in MMA, this Saturday we’re likely to see the best version of Will Brooks to date. Until then, take a glimpse at some of the highlights that has made so many people jump on the Will Brooks hype train.

Do you think Will Brooks gets the win at UFC 210?

Daniel Cormier Knows His Legacy Will Depend On Rivalry With Jon Jones

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is set to defend his title for the second time in a rematch against No. 1-contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in the main event of this weekend’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York.

The winner will likely meet former champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon Jones this summer when “Bones” returns from suspension.

Cormier and Jones have a rivalry dating back a few years now and they actually clashed at Jan. 2015’s UFC 182 where Jones beat “DC” by unanimous decision. They were supposed to rematch last summer at UFC 200, but “Bones” was forced to withdraw after he failed a drug test.

Cormier is well aware that he has a tough test in front of him in “Rumble”, but he also recently said that his legacy will depend on his rivalry with Jones:

“I think beating ‘Rumble’ again, it’ll help [my legacy], but ultimately it will come down to my rivalry with Jones,” Cormier told FOX Sports. “Anthony has done a tremendous job as he’s come up the weight classes but, we’re talking about a rivalry with a guy that many consider the greatest fighter of all time. So wins over a guy like Jon Jones is what’s going to really, probably be the one thing that solidifies where I’m trying to sit whenever I retire from the sport.

“At the end of the day I do have a tough challenge on my hands next week. Beating Anthony again, it’ll just be closing the chapter. I mean people really do believe in him and they really do love the knockout, so he gets a reputation for being the scariest guy. So beating someone like that twice really should cement who I am and everything else I’ve done, but ultimately I think it will depend on the rivalry with Jones.”

After Jones’ failed drug test was brought to light, Cormier admitted that he longer had interest in being matched up with the former champion given Jones’ consistent issues outside of the cage. Now, however, “DC” is ready to address the situation and ready to seek revenge on his bitter rival:

“Yes, I will be ready to address the situation. For a while, I felt so burned that I was like I don’t want to fight him. Honestly, before I knew that his suspension was going to carry through [the] next year, I spoke to people about what should happen next before the ‘Rumble’ fight came about. It was [expletive] Jon Jones, I’m not dealing with him again,” Cormier explained.

“I’ve dealt with that. I’ve resolved those issues. I’ll give it another shot. I want to compete against that guy. I want to fight him. He beat me the first time and that means something to me. Yes, I will be ready to address that situation once again.”

Do you expect Cormier to get by Johnson and earn a rematch with Jones?

Jon Jones is set to step back into the spotlight.

Jones once reigned over the 205-pound division after defeating ‘Shogun’ Rua in 2011 for the division’s title. After racking up eight straight successful title defenses Jones was all set to attempt his ninth against knockout artist Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, when a hit-and-run incident forced him out of the bout and needing to handle his newfound legal issues.

Rival Daniel Cormier would go on to step in for Jones and defeat Johnson via submission to win the vacated light heavyweight throne, while Jones made his Octagon return in April of last year against Ovince Saint Preux. ‘Bones’ won the bout via unanimous decision.

He was all set to attempt to reclaim his title from ‘DC’ in the main event of UFC 200 this past July, however, Jones was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) days out from the bout after testing positive for banned substances. Jones was handed a one-year suspension and is expected to challenge the winner of this weekend’s (Sat. April 8, 2017) UFC 210 pay-per-view (PPV) title bout between Cormier and Johnson.

MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn reports that Jones is expected to speak to media this weekend in Buffalo ahead of the title bout:

Upon his return, how do you think Jones will fare against Cormier a second time around? Or if ‘Rumble’ continues to lay waste to the 205-pound division, how will ‘Bones’ deal with the former Blackzillian’s ridiculous power?
