Today’s UFC Summer Kickoff Press Conference from UFC 211 in Dallas, Texas, featured a jam-packed lineup of the bouts that will headline a crowded summer schedule for the promotion.

Things got heated on one more than one occasion, with a ton of trash talk being unleashed between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, and Michael Johnson and the newly-signed Justin Gaethje, but the most heated exchange of the afternoon undoubtedly belonged to lightweights Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee, who will headline June 25’s UFC Fight Night 112 from Oklahoma City.

Chiesa shrugged off Lee’s brash smack talk initially, but he wouldn’t have it when “The Motown Phenom” brought his mom into the conversation for some unknown reason. A scuffle ensued, with a few shots thrown before security stepped in.

All in all, it added to a wild scene that should hopefully get excitement rolling for the second half of the year after what has been a dismal start to 2017. Watch a video of the press conference brawl here:

UFC 211: Stipe Miocic Is Out For Revenge Against Junior dos Santos

Finally we’re breaking down the main event of UFC 211 and it’s a doozy. The first battle between Stipe Miocic and Junior do Santos was a brutal slugfest that saw both men trading blows for five rounds. It was thoroughly entertaining and horrifying to watch. There’s only so much damage the brain can take after all and as such I see the champion and former champion taking a very different approach heading into this rematch. With everything on the line, you can bet both men are going to perform far differently than they did in their first meeting.

As far as overall games go in the UFC heavyweight division, Stipe Miocic is definitely one of the more all around fighters out there. With good boxing and solid wrestling, Stipe Miocic has a good amount of tools to rest his hat on. He does his best work in fact when he’s utilizing his jabs and feints to mix in his wrestling and visa versa. Having multiple tools to fall back on is a great way to confuse opponents and keep them unbalanced. He’ll have to do just that in this rematch.

Stipe Miocic had a ton of success in their first bout when he pressured Junior dos Santos against the fence where he unloaded combinations and threatened with takedowns. He’ll need to follow a similar game plan in his fight, but utilizing a lot more feints will be key for a few things. Not only will it keep dos Santos off balance, but it will allow Miocic to preserve his energy systems. Miocic was on cloud now in his first bout with the former champion when he was fresh. When he began to grow tired, we started seeing the holes in his game and his tendency to swing wild in chase of the knock out. Miocic needs to stay controlled, use his jab and leg kicks to keep dos Santos off balance, and shoot in for takedowns to keep the former champion honest.

The former heavyweight champion was once a man to be feared in the heavyweight division. In fact, he still should be feared as he still packs a punch in every shot. Junior dos Santos was once a man who seemed impossible to defeat until his losses to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem. His tendency to fight with his back against the cage has often gotten him in a ton of trouble and mitigating that will surely give him a leg up in this bout. His jab and overhand rights are still sharp and are filled with devastating one shot power. The former champion showed in his last fight with Ben Rothwell that he’s capable of keeping his back off of the cage as well as utilizing front and side kicks to keep his opponent at bay.

For the rematch it’s obvious both men will want to build on what they did well in the first bout. But besides that, Junior dos Santos will want to be sure to implement more of a diverse approach to this fight. His jab will always be a great set up for his left hook as he’s always had proficiency at snapping out the strike with speed and optimal technique. His elbow is tucked in tight, he switches things up and goes to the body with the jab as well, and converts the punch to a hook seamlessly. He’ll want to use the jab to bait Miocic forward where dos Santos can shift out and fire a blistering right overhand or left hook counter. His kicking game should also be used as an option. The side kick, particularly the defensive side kick, will allow dos Santos to create space and reset if necessary. Junior dos Santos already has the takedown defense to keep things up right, its all about utilizing the right distancing and drawing Miocic forward so he can run into a counter or even a takedown.

Who leaves the cage as the UFC heavyweight champion at UFC 211?

UFC Needs To Rebound Big With Tomorrow’s UFC 211

It’s no secret that the UFC has had a less than stellar start to 2017. It’s no secret that the UFC has had a less than stellar start to 2017.

New owners WME-IMG have appeared to struggle settling into their new roles at the helm of the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion and it has shown with the pay-per-view (PPV) cards that have took place so far this year.

PPV has and likely always will be the main platform and main source of income for the promotion, but UFC 208, which took place on Feb. 11, 2017, and UFC 209, which went down on March 4, 2017, weren’t cards to remember. UFC 210, which  took place on April 8, 2017, didn’t garner much attention either, as it appeared to have been a rather weak card aside from its main event and co-main event, which ended in a whirlwind of controversy.

With that being said, the UFC is in desperate need of a rebound and the promotion is well-aware of that.

That rebound should come at UFC 211, which will hit screens tomorrow May 13, 2017 live on PPV from Dallas, Texas. Seemingly aware of the slow start it has gone through to start the new year, the UFC has stacked the deck for UFC 211, making it look like a vintage event that fight fans had grown to love.

The upcoming card will be headlined by a heavyweight title rematch between Stipe Miocic and Junior Dos Santos, two sluggers who went back-and-forth for five rounds in a bloody war in their first meeting back in Dec. 2014.

The co-main event has a strong chance to produce fireworks as well, as reigning strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will put her 115-pound title on the line for the fifth consecutive time against Jessica Andrade. ‘Joanna Champion’ has proven to be an exciting fighter and she will face a legitimate threat in the No. 3-ranked Andrade.

Two intriguing title fights are set to headline the card, but that isn’t all. No. 3-ranked surging welterweight contender Demian Maia will meet No. 6-ranked Jorge Masvidal in what could potentially be a 170-pound title eliminator. Former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will return to action as well, as he takes on No. 10-ranked Dustin Poirier. Finally, former featherweight title challenger Frankie Edgar will take on rising prospect Yair Rodriguez in an interesting clash of styles.

It’s well-rounded cards with a plethora of talent and depth like this one that made the UFC the premier organization for mixed martial arts. Unfortunately, the promotion has seemed to stray away from this strategy in recent memory, but UFC 211 should serve as a rebound, and one that is needed by the promotion.

Let’s hope that UFC 211 doesn’t just mark a rebound, but a return to high level consistency as well.
