UFC Women’s strawweight Cortney Casey underwent quite the fallout following her false-positive test results from theTexas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

Casey fought and defeated Jessica Aguilar by decision at UFC 211. However, the ineptitude of the TDLR led to that victory being overturned to a no contest due to a false- positive test for performance enhancing drugs.

The only problem was that the test was wrong, and Casey’s system was actually clean of all such banned substances.

Casey discussed the backlash and fallout from the botched false-positive test and how it has affected her career.

“One of the worst things that can happen to an athlete is being associated with steroids in any way, shape or form,” Casey told Bloody Elbows’ Iain Kidd. “I don’t want to have that asterisk next to my name. I’m innocent, but that’ll still be there; some people aren’t going to read the second article, some people aren’t going to understand it, or they’re going to think I just found a loophole. I can’t change the way they think because they heard I used steroids, so I’ll always be attached to that and it sucks.

I was approached at Target, and I was told that I had let the island down, that I was a cheater, and asked how I could do that to my fans. I live on a small island and word travels fast; they don’t call it Coconut Wireless for nothing”

It’s one thing for people to attack me on social media, but then they went and found my mom on social media. When I posted pictures of the kids I train, people were saying things like, ‘Don’t take steroids like your coach.’”

Casey went on to explain her initial course of action immediately following the news of her false-positive drug test.

After being verbally attacked on social media and in person, Casey says it was difficult to refrain from defending her make and reputation, instead holding out for the truth to eventually emerge on its own.

“Everyone told me not to say anything, to make sure my family didn’t say anything because I should avoid pissing Texas off, especially when Jeff reached out on my behalf and told them that this was basically a false positive and they shouldn’t be releasing it and they still did nothing. Jeff told me after that to just say silent so we don’t piss them off. Dana said the same thing, he told me just to listen to Jeff because he knows what he’s doing and they hired him for a reason.

I’ve been following that advice, but it has been hard. I’ve been attacked on social media, I’ve been verbally assaulted by people at Target, it’s just been hard. I’m glad it’s coming out that I was innocent to all along. It has been the longest month of my life, waiting for the result of a test I already knew the answer to.”

She was vindicated after a follow-up test revealed that the false-positive test was incorrect, despite the damage that had already been done.

However, Casey was ultimately quite supportive of how the UFC handled the situation.

“Dana [White] reached out to me right away, the same day everything came out, and he called me and told me to hang in there and the UFC would take the proper steps to make sure the situation was handled properly and that they would pay for everything up front. That was reassuring. When you hear things from Dana, when he tells you that we’re behind you, then you know you have the UFC’s support. Sean Shelby reached out and told me to hang in there, and told me we’d get through this, as well.”

“I’ve been happy with how the UFC handled this and with how USADA handled it, the only part that hasn’t been going smoothly is the contact with–and professionalism of–Texas.”

An impressive win for women’s strawweight Cortney Casey will be stricken from the record books.

Casey tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone during an in-competition drug screen in conjunction with her dominant unanimous decision win over WSOF champ Jessica Aguilar at May 13’s UFC 211 from Dallas according to an open records request from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) obtained by MMA Fighting earlier today.

Her win over Aguilar has been changed to a no contest, and she has been suspended for three months, in addition to facing a fine up to $2,000. The records reveled Casey has tested positive for a 5.4:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone, higher than the 4:1 allowed limit.

While she may be suspended, it’s important to note that Casey has not been flagged for using any specific substances. Her sample would reportedly have to be further tested using isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to clarify if the elevated levels had come from ingesting exogenous testosterone according to the MMA Fighting report.

She has also not been flagged by USADA, the UFC’s anti-doping partner. UFC vice president of health and performance Jeff Novitzky stated USADA has not brought any case up against Casey:

“We have not been informed by USADA of anything regarding a potential anti-doping policy violation for Cortney Casey,” Novitzky said. “No positive tests, no suspicion of anything — now or in the past. USADA has not been in contact with us about anything at all related to that.”

Jorge Masvidal Compares Demian Maia Loss To STD

Heading into May 13’s UFC 211 from Dallas, Texas, Jorge Masvidal, the No. 5-ranked welterweight contender, was riding an impressive three fight win streak that included back-to-back stoppage victories over the likes of Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone.

At UFC 211, “Gamebred” met Brazilian grappling guru and surging contender Demian Maia in a battle for the next welterweight title shot. Masvidal, however, ended up losing a split-decision and he recently compared that loss to an ‘STD’:

“Oh man, it burns like an STD. I wouldn’t know, but I’ve heard,” joked Masvidal during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. “Every time I wake up to piss, it burns, bro. And I’m not talking like an STD, I’m talking about real life because I hate losing,” he said.

Despite the loss, Masvidal actually put on a decent showing, as he saw success on the feet, while avoiding the submission attempts of Maia. With that being said “Gamebred” wanted to make it clear that he asked for the fight and he also expressed interest in running it back with Maia in the future:

“I want to remind everyone that I asked for this fight because this was the toughest fight, just like ‘Cowboy,’ it was one of the toughest fights I could make for 170. It was a fight where I could prove the most. It didn’t go my way 100 percent, but, I can’t wait to do it again, me and Maia are going to have to do it again,” he said.

“We both had each other in trouble at times, but it was small mistakes I made on my part. If I had tweaked this and that, instead of being split it could have been a unanimous. I’m eager to improve on those mistakes. If we’re talking about damage, yeah, I feel I won the fight,” he declared.

“But, control is a big part of the game, so the people that say, ‘You won, you got ripped off,’ and things like that, I do understand Demian’s side, you can’t ask that dude to become a striker all of a sudden when he hasn’t been. He’s always been who he is you know? He can’t change over night and a big part of the game is control and I didn’t do well in that department as I usually do.”

Masvidal remains one of the best welterweights in the world and he has his sights set on another high profile fight: a bout against No. 1-ranked two-time title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson:

“I think he is the next highest ranked opponent that I can get my hands on. Like I said at the beginning of it when it’s easy money, I only want the toughest opponents available to me,” said Masvidal. “Don’t let the slogan throw you off. I only want the highest-ranked dudes, the toughest fights. That’s all I ever wanted since coming to UFC. So all the Ultimate Fighter winners, the up-and-coming phenoms, the 9-0 guy, is not what I am looking for right now, you know? I’m proven animal and I’m only going to fight dude’s that are at the highest in the game, high up on the food chain. I’m trying to get the biggest fights, always. If not the biggest, the toughest,” he concluded.

Would you like to see “Gamebred” square off with “Wonderboy”?

Dustin Poirier is willing to run it back against Eddie Alvarez for his next bout, but he needs little time to recover from their initial meeting first.

Poirier and Alvarez met on the headliner of the UFC 211 preliminary card on FX which ended with quite a bit of controversy. In the second round Poirier seemed to have Alvarez in trouble before “The Underground King” countered with a big shot of his own, wobbling “The Diamond” as well.

Although both men were rocked, Alvarez was able to get Poirier on the ground against the cage, but he landed a pair of illegal knees which caused a break in the action. After some discussion, the bout was waived off as a no contest despite many believing that Poirier should’ve won via disqualification.

Both men expressed interest in running the fight back after the call was made, but Poirier is still disgruntled by the entire scenario (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I’d like to beat him again, unless the UFC moves forward like I beat him and matches me up with the next fight that I would have got,” Poirier said. “That win Saturday night would have put me in talks of the title. (Alvarez) is ranked No. 3 – he was one fight removed from being the champion.

“There was still a lot of fight left for me to shine, and I was just starting to show it. So the whole situation sucks.”

Initially both men showed great respect for one another after the bout inside the cage, but Alvarez soon took to Twitter to accuse “The Diamond” of wanting a way out regardless of the outcome. Regardless of the former lightweight champ’s words, Poirier knows he was going to get his hand raised if it hadn’t had been for Alvarez’s illegal knees – and he thinks his opponent knew it too:

“I look at it as a win,” Poirier said. “I know, and Eddie knows, that I was going to win that fight. I don’t care what he says by saving face or talking trash on Twitter. Whatever he has to make himself believe to get himself excited about a rematch, or feel good about getting back in there with me, go ahead and do it.”

“I’m not going to rush back into a fight right now and just jump onto the next card, because that was a hard shot,” he said. “I want to recover. I just can’t jump back into training camp right now. That was a good shot I took. I think it was a harder shot because I wasn’t ready for it.”

When it’s all said and done, Poirier has faith that the UFC will get the call right as it pertains to who they’ll pair him up with next:

“Usually, the UFC has a great track record of making something right if they feel it was wrongfully done, so we’ll see what happens,” Poirier said.
