The UFC is slowly but surely putting together a card for UFC 213 and recently it was reported that the promotion is looking to add a heavyweight bout to the event. The UFC is working on booking Travis Browne vs. Aleksei Oleinik at the event, according to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

Browne (18-6-1) has been on a losing streak as of late as he has lost his three bouts in a row and is coming off a knockout loss to Derrick Lewis in February. Before that, he suffered losses to Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez. He hasn’t won a fight since January of 2016.

On the other side, Oleinik (51-10-1) has won 12 of his last 13 fights, and the Russian veteran is making his name known in the division. He is coming off a submission win over Viktor Pesta in January, which marked the first time in UFC history someone won a fight via that particular choke.

The UFC has already announced a bout for this event, which ironically is a heavyweight bout as well between Alistair Overeem and Werdum. This will be a trilogy fight between these two fighters.

The event takes place on July 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada at the T-Mobile Arena. As of this writing, the UFC has yet to announce a main event for the show.

A pivotal welterweight fight appears to be set for July 8’s UFC 213, which will take place during International Fight Week in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, UFC President Dana White has confirmed that former 170-pound champion Robbie Lawler will return to the cage to take on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone:

Lawler, who remains ranked at No. 2 in the division, hasn’t competed since last July when he was brutally knocked out by Tyron Woodley in the first round of their UFC 201 main event where he surrendered his title in the process.

The No. 8-ranked Cerrone, on the other hand, was riding a four fight win streak since moving up to welterweight in Feb. 2016, but he suffered a stoppage loss to Jorge Masvidal this past January in Denver, Colorado.

Lawler and Cerrone were actually scheduled to meet last November at UFC 205 in New York City, but Lawler made it clear that he needed more time to recover after the knockout loss to Woodley.

Who do you expect to come out on top when these two 170-pound warriors meet this summer?

Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum Rumored For Massive July PPV

The UFC’s traditional blockbuster July pay-per-view (PPV), which will come in the form of July 8’s UFC 213 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this year, may have just signed on a pivotal heavyweight bout.

Just moments ago, MMA Fighting confirmed a report that former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum will meet former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem at the midsummer spectacular.

The heavyweight legends have met twice before, with Werdum submitting Overeem in Pride FC back in 2006 before “The Demolition Man” got his revenge five years later in Strikeforce in a lackluster decision win where Werdum mainly flopped to the ground in a vain effort to get the hulking Dutch kickboxer to engage him on the ground.

No. 1-ranked Werdum has had a run of strange circumstances as of late, seeing fights with Cain Velasquez at UFC 207 and Ben Rothwell at UFC 211 in May fall apart due to his opponents being deemed unfit to fight and failing a USADA drug test, respectively. Former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold called him out for an oddly-matched bout, but Werdum refused after calling the AKA product ‘chicken’ before discussing a trilogy bout with Overeem, which is ultimately close to coming to fruition. ‘Vai Cavalo’ was most recently seen dismantling old foe Travis Browne.

Overeem has enjoyed a late-career resurgence of sorts, winning five out of his last six bouts while falling just short in a title bid against champion Stipe Miocic at last September’s UFC 203. “The Reem” got back on track in impressive fashion with a vicious knee stoppage of fan favorite Mark Hunt at March 4’s UFC 209.

In a heavyweight division lacking true title contenders outside of the rising Francis Ngannou, this fight should potentially be for the next title shot against the winner of the Miocic vs. Junior dos Santos rematch in the main event of UFC 211.

The fight has not yet been officially confirmed by the UFC.
