For quite some time now, former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg Justino has expressed interest in fighting at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California. UFC President Dana White has also said that she will indeed be fighting on the card, although an opponent for the Brazilian slugger has still yet to be named

That could change very soon, however, as Cyborg took to her official Twitter account yesterday (June 10, 2017) to announce that she’s received a bout agreement for UFC 214:

The bout was not officially announced during UFC Fight Night 110 last night, but recent speculation has indicated that her opponent could be reigning Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson. Last week, it was announced that Anderson would be headlining Invicta FC 24, but MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani recently reported that a potential bout between Cyborg and Anderson was not off the table:

Cyborg had also expressed interest in fighting Germaine de Randamie, who currently holds the UFC’s featherweight title, but de Randamie has refused to fight Cyborg, while also revealing her intentions to drop back down to 135 pounds. The UFC then said a bout between Cyborg and former bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano was being targeted, but Zingano said she wouldn’t be healthy in time for UFC 214.

With that being said, Anderson appears to be the leading option to take on Cyborg on July 29.

UFC 214 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between bitter rivals Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, although Cyborg could slide into that headlining role if she is officially booked to fight on the card.

Jimi Manuwa: I’ll KO “Fat Wrestler” DC Within Two Rounds

Jimi Manuwa has quickly developed a deep animosity towards light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Ever since Manuwa has emerged as a top five talent in an otherwise thin division, Cormier has condescended and belittled Manuwa whenever the two have crossed paths. He even asked teammate Kamaru Usman to grab Manuwa’s arm to “see how strong he is”.

With the British slugger on the UFC 214 card as a backup in case Jon Jones fails to make it to fight night, the tension between Cormier and Manuwa has become palpable.

Manuwa discussed his thoughts on a potential fight with DC this past week, and didn’t hold back when assessing Cormier’s skill set.

“I didn’t see anything that was like, ‘wow,’ or anything,” Manuwa said during Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “He’s just a fat wrestler, that’s it. He can’t stand with me, you know what I mean? All he’s got is his wrestling, and all he’s going to try and do is take me down if I fight him. That’s it. He’s very good at it, but that’s all he’s got. If we fight, all I would have to work on is takedown defense, and I’ll knock him out within two rounds.”

“If Jones pulls out or DC pulls out, I’m going to main event and save the card,” Manuwa said, laughing. “I’m preparing for a fight. I’m preparing stand-up, wrestling, judo, everything; I’m just prepared to fight. It doesn’t matter who I’m fighting, whether it’s Daniel Cormier, Jones or Volkan, I’m prepared to fight. I’m doing my runs, I’m doing my cardio, I’m doing my striking, I’m doing my wresting and everything in order to win the fight.

“If it’s DC, I just have to do a little bit of more wrestling. If it’s Jones, I’ll do some wrestling and a little bit more striking. If it’s Volkan, I have to do a little bit more striking and takedown defense and sharpen up everything. So that’s what were doing, sharpening up everything and getting ready for victory.”

While Cormier is set to finally rematch the only man to beat him in Jon Jones at UFC 214, Manuwa will take on surging prospect Volkan Oezdimir on the same card.

Manuwa will serve as the replacement fight should Jones be forced out of his title fight with DC, as has happened before.

Prior to Daniel Cormier’s most recent fight against Anthony Johnson in the main event of UFC 210 in Buffalo, New York, there was some controversy surrounding the UFC light heavyweight champion.

At the weigh-ins, Cormier actually missed weight on his first attempt before hitting the 205-pound limit just minutes later while holding onto a towel. Many feel as if he was holding onto the towel in order to weigh-in lighter, but “DC” has claimed that he was holding onto it simply to keep his body covered from the cameras.

Either way, the weight cut was clearly difficult for the former Olympian. With that in mind, it’s interesting to note that Cormier’s next defense will take place in the main event of UFC 214 from Anaheim, California when he takes on former champion Jon Jones in a highly anticipated rematch.

The event will be the first to take place under the California State Athletic Commission’s new 10-point plan in order to reduce the amount of fighters that severely dehydrate themselves in order to conduct a massive weight cut. Under these new rules, Cormier knows he has to be ‘careful’:

“I have to be careful,” Cormier told MMA Fighting Thursday.

In order to receive medical clearance to fight, Cormier will have to weigh in at 225.5 pounds or less in time for his physical, which will likely take place a month prior to the fight. The champion spoke on this, saying that it will actually be ‘better’ for him:

“It will actually be better for me, because I’ll get down in weight earlier,” Cormier said. “That’s the way I used to do it when I first moved down to 205.”

The CSAC has recently been making changes in order to make weight cutting a safer process for fighters and Cormier doesn’t feel as if that’s a ‘bad thing’, especially because CSAC executive officer Andy Foster is a former fighter himself:

“Fighters don’t want to be told what they and they can’t do by people who have never done it before,” Cormier said. “If [Foster] was a fighter and he’s cut weight before, then he’s actually qualified to speak on it.”

“I think there will be changes that happen, eventually,” he said. “It’s not a bad thing.”

Do you expect Cormier to have issues making weight under these new rules?

Coach: Jon Jones Will Make UFC 214 & Win Title

Jon Jones’ striking coach John Winkeljohn is extremely confident that the former light heavyweight champion will not only make it to UFC 214 to take on current champ Daniel Cormier, he will also make it look easy.

Speaking with Submission Radio, Winklejohn assured fans that “Bones” won’t have any issues making it to fight night, an issue that has plagued the former champ since being stripped of his title.

“Nah, he won’t exit. No, Jon’s getting his title back – well, the title he never lost. Yeah, he’s walking out back being the champ of the world again. Absolutely, absolutely. Jon’s focus is on point. Like I said, when Jon gets on top of someone on the ground, it’s always a bloody mess with elbows, etcetera. He’s got great submissions from there too and Jon can take Daniel down like you saw last time, there’s no doubt about it. But on the way, there’s a lot of strikes that Daniel’s gonna run into before he gets taken down.”

Jones and Cormier fought back at UFC 182 in 2015, where “Bones” defended his title with a unanimous decision victory. That loss remains DC’s only defeat in his 20-fight professional MMA career.

Cormier most recently choked out Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the second time to defend his title while Jones has been sorting out his suspension.

The former 205 pound kingpin has had a whirlwind of drama throughout the past few years. He initially got into some trouble after a hit-and-run that left a pregnant woman injured, and after reappearing at UFC 197 to take on Ovince Saint Preux for an interim title, Jones was stripped of his belt once again following a failed drug test leading into his scheduled rematch with DC at UFC 200.

However, to hear Jones’ coach tell it, fans can be rest assured that “Bones” will make t to the fight at UFC 214 in July, and will leave victorious once again.

Do you expect Jones to make it to his fight with DC? And will the former champion regain the belt he essentially never lost?
