Surging UFC lightweight contenders Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee will meet for the interim 155-pound title at next month’s (Sat., October 7, 2017) UFC 216 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The winner will inch themselves closer to a coveted title fight with current champion Conor McGregor, but the fight is far from guaranteed as “The Notorious” has been rumored for his awaited trilogy bout with Nate Diaz in his first title defense since winning the belt from Eddie Alvarez at last year’s UFC 205.

Ferguson and Lee are the cream of the lightweight crop, however, but it must be noted that they are indeed 155-pound competitors. Earlier today, Ferguson apparently found a billboard touting he and “The Motown Phenom” as fighting for the interim title in McGregor’s first UFC division of featherweight.

Not surprisingly, he called them out on social media for their glaring mistake. Check it out:

UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis lives in Houston, where a terrible hurricane has been flooding and wreaking havoc over the past few days.

Lewis, in the midst of preparing for a showdown with Fabricio Werdum at October’s UFC 216, helped rescue a man and his family from the flooding despite the fact that they were toting a Confederate flag.

Lewis told the story as Hurricane Harvey continued to tear through Houston to MMAjunkie.com, and it was quite the interesting one:

“I don’t care about that. I live in Texas. It ain’t nothing new. I’ve been living in the South all my life, and it ain’t nothing I hadn’t seen before or discussed about. I don’t care about that type of stuff. I just wanted to help him.”

“I picked up one guy and his family, his wife – he just kept apologizing to me, because all he really had was his clothes, and he wanted to take his Confederate flag. He wanted to take that with him, and he just apologized and said, ‘Man, I’ll sit in the back of your truck, man. I don’t want to have my flag inside of your truck like this.’ I said, ‘Man, I’m not worried about that.’

“He’s saying, ‘You never know if you ever need someone, so …’ – I already knew where he was going with it. I just said, ‘Don’t even worry about it. It’s OK. I don’t care about that.’ His wife kept hitting him and saying, ‘You should have just left it.’”

With all of the racial tension and animus going on due to far-right groups asserting themselves in Charlottesville recently, Lewis says the man’s wife was more angered at the Confederate flag-wearing man more than he was.

But it’s encouraging to know that “The black Beast was willing to put racial differences aside and do what he knew was right in terms of pure human decency.

Lewis and Werdum will throw down on October 7.

Paige VanZant’s UFC flyweight debut is official.

After a report surfaced earlier this month that the popular women’s strawweight contender would take on former bantamweight Jessica Eye at October 7’s UFC 216 pay-per-view (PPV) card, the bout has been made official by the promotion according to Adam Hill of The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The UFC will implement a women’s 125-pound division during the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) featuring coaches Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez after many female strawweights called for a division where they could cut less weight, while some female bantamweights are willing to cut to 125 pounds to not have to deal with as much of a size discrepancy against larger 135-pound competitors. TUF 26 will crown the first-ever UFC women’s flyweight champion at its finale in December.

VanZant has been out of action since last December when she was submitted by Michelle Waterson in the main event of UFC on FOX 21. She’s accepted as one of the most popular faces on the UFC roster, but in reality, she’s only won a single fight over unranked fighter Bec Rawlings since September 2015, losing two of her last three fights (albeit to top contenders) by submission.

She’ll face off with a contender who’s in even more need of a win, as Eye has dropped her last four bouts in the bantamweight division, losing each by decision. She was set to fight Aspen Ladd at July 7’s TUF 25 Finale but Ladd was forced out the week of the bout.

UFC 216 is set to feature an interim lightweight title bout between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
