Top UFC Lightweight Thinks McGregor ‘Might Do Something Stupid’

With the undercard for tonight’s (Sat., August 26, 2017) massive Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., already underway, the biggest combat sports night of the year – and some would say of all time – is nearly in full swing.

The time for speculating just how UFC lightweight champ McGregor, who has no professional boxing matches on his record, can defeat the undefeated Mayweather, who is widely regarded as the best defensive boxer of all time, is growing short. But as the hour draws near, one UFC contender believes McGregor may actually break the rules against Mayweather.

Top-ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson, who takes on Kevin Lee for the interim title at October 7’s UFC 216, offered that belief at the UFC media day this past Thursday (transcribed by MMA Fighting), noting that “The Notorious” may get frustrated and use an illegal move when he is caught in the moment:

“We might see Conor do something stupid on accident if he panics. You know what I’m saying? He might throw an elbow or he might headbutt or he might do something, like he doesn’t realize. You’re in the middle of a fight, you’re in a war. You’re not gonna say anything. What’s his number one sport? MMA. So I mean, that being said, point taken here is shit can happen. It’s a fight.”

With nine wins in a row to his credit but a seemingly never-ending drama with oft-scheduled but never realized contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ferguson has time to analyze Mayweather vs. McGregor, and he believes it’s going to be more about the unorthodox McGregor’s movement and footwork more than most believe.

If he can’t keep the conditioning in his legs, “El Cucuy” believes he may find himself out of his element:

“Everybody thinks the conditioning in boxing has to do with your arms. What’s the first thing to go? It’s your legs. And when your legs go, what happens? [Your arms] start to drop. Now, like I said, if Conor did his punching on his bag and he didn’t do all the rest of the conditioning with it, like I said, boxing is a completely different animal.”

Indeed boxing is a completely different animal, and it’s also one that Mayweather has ruled with an iron fist for many years on his way to his shining 49-0 record.

But regardless of that number, many are still picking McGregor to shock the world and become the first fighter – boxer or not – to sleep the notoriously hard-to-hit “Money” in Vegas tonight. Ferguson thinks he may break the rules and incorporate a banned MMA move or two into his arsenal – but do you believe he really needs it?

Despite the fact that Derrick Lewis announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA) following his loss to Mark Hunt earlier this year, the hard-hitting heavyweight has decided to return to competition as he is set to fight former UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum at UFC 216

If you recall, Hunt was calling for a fight against Werdum. However, the promotion decided to book Lewis against Werdum, who is a jiu-jitsu specialist. This fight decision did not sit well with Hunt as he went to social media to voice his opinion about the fight and blast Werdum for being a “filthy coward dog.”

When Lewis spoke with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour, he was asked about the fight and according to Lewis, Werdum hand-picked him as an opponent. He thinks that the UFC thought it would be an easier path to the win column.

“I was surprised because I heard Mark Hunt asked for Fabricio and Fabricio said, basically, that he didn’t want to fight him,” said Derrick during a recent interview on The MMA Hour (transcript courtesy of MMA Mania.

“I guess that same week, they called me and said Fabricio wanted to fight me. He hand-picked me. I guess he thinks I’m the easier fighter because of the way I performed against Mark.”

At the end of the day, Lewis doesn’t think it’s a sign of disrespect but rather, he is just continuing his journey of being the underdog and undervalued as an overall MMA fighter.

“It don’t matter, I’ve been underestimated my whole career. Guys don’t believe in my skills and stuff like that. I don’t care. I’m going to go out there and show him what’s up,” added Lewis.

Hunt is set to fight Marcin Tybura in the main event of UFC Fight Night 121 on Nov. 18. The event will air live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia.

On the flip side, UFC 216 is set to take place on October 7th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The preliminary card will air on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, as well as FOX Sports 1. The main card will be broadcasted on PPV. The main event for the upcoming show has yet to be officially announced.

A massive heavyweight contest is being targeted for UFC 216 on pay-per-view (PPV).

Per a report from MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, the UFC is planning to have No. 2-ranked Fabricio Werdum go head-to-head with fan favorite and No. 7-ranked Derrick Lewis:

“The Black Beast” comes off of a fourth round TKO loss to knockout artist Mark Hunt. He was previously on a six fight win streak, finishing all but one via knockout, highlighted by a second round knockout over Travis Browne. Lewis briefly contemplated retirement after his loss to Hunt, however, that was merely out of emotion following the loss.

Werdum is an ex-UFC heavyweight champion that earned one of the biggest wins of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career when he submitted Cain Velasquez in June of 2015 to win the title. He lost in his first title defense via knockout to current champ Stipe Miocic before going on to defeat Travis Browne via decision. His last Octagon appearance saw him take the wrong end of a majority decision to Alistair Overeem.

UFC 216 is set to go down live on PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 7, 2017. Currently, an interim lightweight title bout between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee is to serve as one of the featured bouts of the evening.
