Jake Matthews may have won and taken home a $50,000 ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus, but he also took home a nasty eye injury after his opponent gouged his eye mid-fight.

Matthews took on Li Jingliang on UFC 221’s undercard and threatened with a guillotine choke, and that’s when Jingliang used his fingers to eye gouge him in an effort to illegally escape the choke.

For whatever reason, Jingliang wasn’t deducted a point or reprimanded in any way for the blatantly deliberate foul outside of a very brief warning.

Matthews, being the good sport that he is, updated fans on his Instagram shortly after the fight to show the damage done:

Matthews ultimately won a unanimous decision, but there was some controversy in awarding both men with the bonus, as Jingliang’s illegal fouling was essentially rewarded on the back on Matthews’ hard work.

No word yet on how long it will take for the Australian to recover.

This past weekend (Feb. 10, 2018), 43-year-old Mark Hunt suffered a decision defeat to rising contender Curtis Blaydes in the co-main event of UFC 221.

And although it’s no secret that “The Super Samoan” has had his issues with the UFC, he isn’t considering hanging his gloves up just yet. In fact, prior to UFC 221, he told MMAjunkie that he had three fights left on his contract with the promotion:

“I get reminded all the time I am the oldest fighter in the universe,” Hunt said. “I’ve got three fights left with the UFC because I haven’t had a good run with a lot of things that’s happened with them.”

“Everyone knows I’m in court about having to get an even playing field. They called me a whiny bitch, but they can all get (expletive). I survived the era of PRIDE, where everyone knowingly juices. I’m here now and they’re trying to make it even.”

Now, he has two fights left on his current contract, and he’d like to fight those out before completing his fighting career ‘globally’:

“After the three fights with the UFC, I’d like to fight globally three more times and then retire. Hang it up,” Hunt said. “I want to go out there in my best shape ever and compete. I feel like I can compete still with these young guys, even though they’re half my age.”

One of the most decorated knockout artists in the history of the heavyweight division, Hunt is certainly nearing the tail end of his career, but he appears to have some fight left in him.

Where would you like to see him fight after he finishes his UFC contract?

UFC 221 took place last night (Feb. 10, 2018) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Perth, Australia, and although it wasn’t the most stacked event, there were certainly a few bright spots that stuck out with one being the debut of UFC newcomer Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya.

Due to a highlight reel of kickboxing finishes, the New Zealand native has received quite a bit of attention and he continued to raise his status in the Octagon, as he scored a stoppage victory and earned a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus.

Now one of the brightest prospects in the UFC, Adesanya will likely continue to receive a good deal of hype, and he even went as far as to say that he has been hyped more than lightweight champion Conor McGregor, the biggest star the sport’s ever seen:

“The pressure has been the same since the jump, since 2008 when I started fighting,” Adesanya told Submission Radio. “After my first fight people were like ‘Wow, look out for this guy’ and it’s been growing, following me. Pretty sure I had more hype than Conor [McGregor] before he jumped into the UFC. Now people know who I am and it’s time to work.”

And it appears as if “The Last Stylebender” will be looking to keep the train rolling and stay active:

“Hey, in 2016 I fought over 20 times,” he said. “And not like gimme fights, the Chinese were trying to kill me so they were giving me killers. So yeah, I’m not new at this, I like staying active. I’m gonna have a week off just to chill, let my hair down. I’m going to go out on a boat here with my crew and get some things done. But everyone’s going to try and call me out now so I’ll leave it to you guys to fight over who wants to fight me next.

”I’ve got a four fight contract, I’m going to get through that this year and then yeah, probably top 10 by next year. I see that happening. I’m in the UFC now, I’ve felt the buzz, deja-vu, same thing different day. Yeah, I want to be in the top 10 by next year but who knows, could be this year!”

Who would you like to see Adesanya fight next?
