The hour is almost here and rising welterweight Darren Till will take on reigning champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Surprisingly enough, Till is the betting favorite over Woodley, who has defended his belt three times but has been out of action since a highly-criticized decision over Demian Maia at UFC 214 last year. Most thought Till’s biggest challenge would be making weight, something he did by a safe margin yesterday morning.

But while the hulking soon-to-be-middleweight is certainly a tough challenge for “The Chosen One,” many still question just why Woodley is the underdog. Till narrowly beat Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in a very controversial decision at May’s UFC Liverpool, a win that was hardly a convincing case for him to be favored over Woodley.

Some believe Till’s striking-based style could be put to the test by former NCAA wrestler Woodley, who has himself gone away from his mat skills in years past. The champ has favored his own knockout striking for several years, but may have to go for a takedown to nullify the powerful Till. If he does, the challenger is ready. Till revealed he is quite confident in his wrestling skills, even so much that he doesn’t give himself enough credit (via MMA News):

“I’m confident. I’m a good wrestler. I don’t give myself a lot of credit for how good of a wrestler I am, like, defensively and offensively. Before I got in the UFC, I actually fought some good wrestlers. I fought a guy in Argentina. He had been to the Olympics, Greco wrestler. You know, I’m going to fight this wrestling OK.”

Till has the obvious size advantage plating in his favor, yet Woodley’s unparalleled speed, athleticism, and power can’t be denied. “The Chosen One” hasn’t exactly blown the roof off the house in his last three fights, but he has made it look his opponents could do precious little against him offensively.

The young Liverpudlian is confident he can find holes in Woodley’s game. In his mind, his all-around game is better than the champ’s:

“I’m extremely confident that we all have holes in our game,” Till said. “People ask me, you know, some fighters they say I just know I’m going to win because my all around game is better. If you wear it like that, coming to a fight.

“Say a fighter has his strengths and has his weaknesses, Tyron has his strengths over me and I have my strengths over him. And that’s how the fight is going to play out. Just strengths to weaknesses. So I’m extremely confident with my wrestling offensively and defensively.”

Kamaru Usman Staying Ready To Serve As Replacement For UFC 228 Main Event

Usman is ready to jump in.

The post Kamaru Usman Staying Ready To Serve As Replacement For UFC 228 Main Event appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Kamaru Usman staying ready to jump in to replace one of the fighters who is fighting in the headliner of the UFC 228 pay-per-view event.

As seen in the main event of UFC Chile on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile on FOX Sports 1, Usman was able to defeat former title contender Demian Maia by unanimous decision. After the fight, Usman went on record by stating that he believes he deserves a title shot as a result of the biggest win thus far in his pro-MMA career.

Although he didn’t get a title shot, he did make a deal with the UFC where he would cut weight and train for the UFC 228 event. The reason for that is due to him being able to replace either UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley or challenger Darrel Till if one of these fighters couldn’t compete.

Woodley and Till made weight on Friday but anything can happen before the two fighters step foot inside of the Octagon. Thus, Usman is still keeping himself ready if anything happens.

“It’s definitely a weird position, especially at this stage of my career,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “But I attest my strength to deal with it with the training I’ve had, going through years and years of wrestling. Especially collegiately. You’re in a big tournament, you don’t know who you’ll get next.”

“It’s whoever gets through that guy that you get next. I like to think that I’ve had a lot of training for moments like this.”

He weighed in at 169 lbs at the official weigh-ins, which means that he is eligible to compete as a replacement fighter.

“At the end of the day, I’m a professional. I’ve been doing this **** for a long, long time. I don’t take this for granted,” he continued. “When I decided that I wanted to be a professional athlete…one thing about me is that my parents didn’t force me to be an athlete. My parents didn’t want me to do this. My dad, when I told him I wanted to wrestle, he told me no, if you’re going to play any sports play baseball.”

“You get paid a lot and there’s not that much contact. But for some reason I chose to do this. I chose to embark on this journey.”

The UFC 228 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on FX at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, 6 p.m. ET.
