After a crazy day where she was pulled from UFC 228 after she was rushed to the hospital for kidney function issues, the UFC has made the decision to strip Nicco Montano of the UFC women’s flyweight title.

UFC President Dana White revealed the news in an interview with FOX Sports 1’s Megan Olivi after the UFC 228 ceremonial weigh-ins:

“The belt becomes vacated. So, the title is vacated. Obviously, Shevchenko is dying to fight for this title. So we’re in the process right now of trying to make another fight.”

Montano was supposed to fight top contender Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of tomorrow night’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

It was slated to be her first title defense after she won the gold by defeating Roxanne Modafferi at last December’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 27 Finale. Montano then spent nine months on the sidelines, reportedly prompting a sense of unease between her and her employers at the UFC.

This appears to have been the last straw. We debated if it was indeed time for the promotion to strip Montano earlier today, and ultimately decided it was. The UFC apparently agreed.

Shevchenko, meanwhile, has long been considered the uncrowned women’s flyweight champion nonetheless. The former women’s bantamweight title contender made her debut int he weight class by decimating Priscila Cachoeira in legitimately one of the most one-sided fights in UFC history earlier this year.

She issued a response to Montano’s withdrawal from the fight by claiming she knew she would pull out all along.

It is unknown who she will fight for the belt, but White claimed the fight will take place “before the end of the year.”

Carla Esparza is currently the No. 6-ranked strawweight in the UFC.

The former 115-pound champion is seeking to reclaim the title she helped introduce to the promotion. She could take a huge step towards doing that tomorrow night (Sat. September 8, 2018) in Dallas, Texas.

Esparza will share the Octagon with Tatiana Suarez at UFC 228. Suarez is a highly-touted prospect and former Ultimate Fighter winner. “The Cookie Monster” won’t allow, who she calls the “female Khabib [Nurmagomedov],” to take her spot (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“As for her being an up-and-comer, I mean she’s been dominating everyone,” Esparza said. “I know she’s hungry. She’s young, she’s looking to drive up to the top. She’s been moving pretty fast, so it’s my job to stop that.

“I don’t care if you’re old, you’re young, you’re black, you’re white, you’re freaking an alien – if you’re trying to take my spot, I can’t let that happen.

“I definitely think I gain something out of this win,” Esparza said. “Maybe people might not know everything about her, but there’s been talks.

“It’s like, ‘Oh, who is this new up-and-comer, what’s going on with her? She’s the female Khabib (Nurmagomedov). She’s this, she’s that.’ I think people might not know so much, but they know that there’s hype behind her, for sure.”

Esparza has won two of her last three fights, although the loss was a controversial split decision defeat to Claudia Gadelha. As for Suarez, she’s undefeated in her young mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

Suarez has won all six of her professional MMA fights, finishing four of them by either knockout or submission. Both Esparza and Suarez are very skilled wrestlers. It will be interesting to see what happens if the fight finds its way to the ground.

Zabit Magomedsharipov Eyes Two Huge Fights Following Potential UFC 228 Win

These would undoubtedly be the biggest fights of Zabit Magomedsharipov’s career.

UFC featherweight prospect Zabit Magomedsharipov has big plans for his UFC career.

Initially, Magomedsharipov was expected to fight Yair Rodriguez on tomorrow’s (Sat. September 8, 2018) UFC 228 event from Dallas, Texas. Unfortunately, Rodriguez suffered an injury and was forced off the card.

Now, Magomedsharipov will take on UFC veteran Brandon Davis instead. Although Magomedsharipov was frustrated about Rodriguez pulling out, he understands that nobody is protected from injuries (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Of course I was frustrated,” Magomedsharipov said. “It was sad to hear that he got injured. Many people were waiting for this fight.

“I was getting ready for this fight, I was calling for this fight, but it’s a part of the game. You cannot judge him. No one is protected from injuries. I can be injured tomorrow.

“He’s injured, and I only wish him the best and that he’s back as soon as possible, and maybe we can finish the history.”

Although Magomedsharipov is a heavy favorite to defeat Davis, he isn’t overlooking his replacement opponent. Should Magomedsharipov leave Texas victorious this weekend, however, he knows who he’d like to fight next. The Russian hopes to land a fight with Chad Mendes or Jose Aldo next:

“If everything goes fortunate Saturday night and I’ll do my best, if Yair is not coming back, I know that Chad Mendes is back,” Magomedsharipov said.

“He’s one of the guys I wish to fight with, or Jose Aldo. I want to fight someone in the top three of the division.”
