Nicco Montano had a rough weekend, to say the least.

UFC 228 was minus one title fight this past weekend (Sat. September 8, 2018).

Initially, Nicco Montano was scheduled to defend the UFC women’s flyweight championship against Valentina Shevchenko. Unfortunately, Montano was unable to make it to the fight due to complications from her weight cut.

Montano was hospitalized the morning of early weigh-ins, the day before the fight, and was pulled from the contest by UFC doctors. UFC President Dana White was frustrated by the entire situation.

In an interview shortly after the entire ordeal became public, he announced Montano had been stripped of the UFC women’s flyweight title. That was news to Montano, who found out the promotion stripped her via Instagram.

She told Luke Thomas the following in a recent appearance on The MMA Hour (quotes via MMA Mania):

”I was going through Instagram and I saw an interview with Dana White saying the title has been stripped,” Montano said. “I was getting out of the hospital and I was like, ‘Alrighty, then.’

“Like I said from the get-go, it’s kind of understandable that they want to get things rolling, it’s just sad that they have to do it on behalf of my health.

“And I suppose I could have said no to the fight in September and get stripped then anyway. But I still would have looked like I was scared or something and I already had a bunch of people on the internet being crazy.

“So I just wanted to show people that I was making an effort and being proactive by taking this fight, knowing that it was going to be up in the air about making weight, and that was going to be the biggest issue.

”It was definitely pretty sad. It was disheartening. I didn’t want to have anything to do with the UFC for a bit after that, my short temper was like, ‘Eff this, you just almost died for a company that doesn’t even call you to see if you’re alive?’

“Personally, I was like, ‘Screw you’, on the business level, I can see it from a different perspective. I can see what they have to do or think they have to do.

”It’s still pretty disheartening as far as what’s going to happen with my career.

“Am I gonna want to stay in the UFC? We’re going to want to stay in the UFC just to fight Valentina eventually. But, with anything else, it’s like what else is the motivation?”

White has since said that he will grant Shevchenko a shot at winning the vacant 125-pound title. In fact, he already has an opponent in mind for her.

Fans have speculated that name could be former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. That has yet to be confirmed as of this writing.

No matter the division Jessica Andrade is a threat to the title. The Andrade that was on display at UFC 228 exhibited a level of aggression that has yet to be seen in the 115-pound division. “Bate Estaca” only needed two minutes to absolutely sleep Karolina Kowalkiewicz in the co-main event of UFC 228.

The MMA universe now wonders if Andrade can do the same to strawweight champion Rose Namajunas.

”I got the knockout and that devastating win,” Andrade said during the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “Which I’m sure leaves no doubt that I can be next to fight for the belt.”

Andrade now holds a victory over Kowalkiewicz who beat Namajunas via split decision back in 2016. However, “Bate Estaca” doesn’t put too much stock in MMA math.

“Rose is a very versatile athlete,” she continued. “She’s got good striking, she’s evolved a lot since she fought Karolina. But I believe I have great chances of winning and becoming champion, both in the striking and on the ground.”

“I’ve improved a lot. I think after tonight’s knockout, for sure it got me one step closer to being able to fight for this belt and show people that I can be a great striker, a great jiu-jitsu fighter and that I’m going to be a lot of work for these girls in the division.”

Andrade would love nothing more than to end 2018 strawweight champion. Her plan is to fight Namajunas for the title at the big year-end end PPV card that already features a super fight between featherweight champ Cris Cyborg and bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes.

“Who doesn’t want to fight in the last UFC event of the year?” Andrade said (apparently cutting weight during Christmas isn’t a big concern to her). “I asked for this fight for Dec. 29. We’ll see what Dana and the UFC have planned for me. But this fight has to happen. I just want it to happen.”

Tyron Woodley made a huge statement by submitting touted rising star Darren Till (full highlights here) in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The impressive win came amongst “USA! USA!” chants from the Texas crowd as he fought off the Liverpool-born Till. It would seem the victory would have earned hated champion Woodley some more fans, and indeed it may have. But it seemingly hasn’t earned him any more respect from UFC President Dana White, with whom he has a well-documented history of beef.

So his relationship with his employers may still be rocky, so much so that Ariel Helwani asked how he could he mend the fence with his employers. Woodley responded he could only keep winning.

“Just keep winning. That’s all I gotta do is keep winning.”

Woodley’s case is somewhat similar to that of all-time great former UFC champion Anderson Silva, who had several fights where he clowned around and drew the ire of White. But after several highlight-reel stoppages in a row, he finally earned the adulation of the fans and the respect of White.

So Woodley told Helwani he had not even spoken to White after his UFC 228 win. All he could he do, he said, was keep winning:

Ariel: What did he (Dana) say to you afterwards?

Woodley: I didn’t speak to him. I just won. That’s what champions do. They win, right?

Indeed that’s what champions do. It worked for ‘The Spider,’ at least eventually, as he became one of the biggest stars MMA has ever seen by knocking out a long list of well-known fighters. Woodley appears to be planning on doing the same, and after he ended his streak of extremely boring title fights by submitting Till, he could be on his way to just that.

Whether or not the fans, and perhaps more importantly for him, White, cooperates remains to be seen.

Fighters who run afoul of the polarizing UFC exec tend to stay there, yet as Silva can attest, all is not lost. What’s next for the UFC longest-reigning and most underappreciated champion?
