Tyron Woodley Thinks He’d Knock Conor McGregor Out

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley wants a money fight. No fight fits the description better than a bout against the biggest star in mixed martial arts (MMA) history, Conor McGregor.

The fight would make sense for both men, as McGregor would love to chase a belt in a third weight class, being the first to do so, and Woodley would make more money than he could possibly imagine. While the stylistic match-up majorly works in Woodley’s favor, “T-Wood” feels a lot better about fighting the Irishman after seeing his performance against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor was defeated by the Russian at UFC 229 this past October via submission. However, while the fight may have ended with a submission, Khabib actually got the only knockdown of the fight as well. He uncorked a right hand that dropped the Irishman for a few seconds.

Khabib’s Striking “Not The Greatest”

Speaking on “Fair Game” with Kristine Leahy, Woodley says that, after seeing Khabib knock McGregor down, he thinks he’d knock the Irishman out (via MMA News):

“Yeah,” Woodley said. “Especially after watching him fight Khabib. You know, Khabib is dope, and he was undefeated. When it comes down to overall martial arts and being able to be a great striker, and power, and wrestling, and defense, and striking, I think Khabib is dope for his pressure and his wrestling.

“But his striking is not the greatest in his division, and he was able to knock Conor down. So if Khabib could knock you down, I think I might be able to knock you out.”

McGregor and Woodley certainly have had their issues with each other in the past. At UFC 205 back in 2016, the pair had a brief stare down with one another during early morning weigh-ins. They then got into it with each other again later that day, but this time backstage at the official weigh-ins as McGregor yelled at the welterweight champion.

Anything is possible when it comes to McGregor, so a potential fight against Woodley one day isn’t completely out of the question, no matter how unlikely it may seem.

Earlier this year, the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) reached a low point after the main event of UFC 229 came to an end.

Following their lightweight title clash, the teams of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov brawled inside and outside the cage. The drama was certainly a big publicity point that will likely be used to promote an eventual rematch. While many chastised the actions, others were entertained by them.

Recently, former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington was a guest on “The MMA Hour.” Covington talked about the brash promotion tactics being used by fighters nowadays, including himself. The welterweight believes things can’t get bad for MMA, as the sport already reached its lowest point at UFC 229 – and fans love it (via MMA Fighting):

“At no point can it get bad for MMA,” Covington said. “We were at our lowest point when that sheep-lover Khabib jumped out of the cage and put innocent people’s lives in danger. Everything sells these days.”

At the end of the day, Covingotn realizes that controversy and drama sells fights. This is why he will continue his brash styles of promotion, and in turn, fans will tune in to either cheer for him, or hope to see him lose:

“I think that people live in safe spaces these days, they don’t want to deal with the controversy and the drama,” Covington said. “But at the end of the day, all this drama and controversy, this is what everybody wants, this is the drug that they’re needing.

“They’re addicted to this. I’m addicted to winning, they’re addicted to drugs and other things, but they’re also addicted to this fight and the controversy that sells this fight. So I don’t think you can go too far promoting these days. When I fight, people are going to watch me fight.

“They’re not gonna turn the channel to ‘Real Housewives of OC’ like they will other fighters. There’s not anything that doesn’t promote and you can’t go too far in this business.”

Conor McGregor’s fighting future will continue to be drawn out as the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has granted the Irishman a continuance.

McGregor was expected to appear before the commission on Monday, Dec. 10. He was set for a hearing for his role in the post-fight mayhem following his UFC 229 main-event loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October. However, the Irishman won’t be in attendance next week because his legal representatives filed for a continuance in the case and it was granted.

MMAFighting.com was the first to report on the McGregor continuance and MMAJunkie.com later confirmed the initial report.

The NSAC filed formal disciplinary complaints against both McGregor and Nurmagomedov last week. Thus setting the stage for their Dec. 10 hearing in Las Vegas.

What McGregor Is Accused Of

The commission has accused McGregor of refusing to comply with “valid orders to return to the octagon canvas” after attempting to jump over the cage into the gallery where Nurmagomedov and Danis fought.

McGregor’s actions also constitute “foul or unsportsmanlike conduct” and a violation of state law.

Potential Punishments

As far as potential punishments for Nurmagomedov and McGregor, they are subject to NSAC bylaws that allow the commission to suspend or revoke their licenses. The commission can also issue up to a lifetime ban and withhold 100 percent of their purses or $250,000, whichever is greater. The fighters are also responsible for attorney’s fees and other punishments the commission sees fit.

Nurmagomedov and McGregor remain temporarily suspended pending their cases. Both men have also been ordered to attend the hearing in person.

What Dana Thinks

UFC President Dana White fully expects both lightweights to be suspended. Thus matchmakers have held off confirmation of any booking until the resolution of their cases. Earlier this week, White eluded to a nightmare scenario in which a one-year suspension would be handed out to Nurmagomedov. A situation White said would be “unfair.”

This isn’t the first time McGregor has had run-ins with the commision. He was fined $50,000 for throwing a water bottle at Nate Diaz during a UFC 202 press conference. His punishment was reduced to $25,000 and ordered to perform 25 hours of community service.

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor is still staying active in the gym.

Following his October loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, the Irishman is still working out in his spare time, hitting mitts. Recently, McGregor took to his Instagram page to share a touching video of himself, his one-year-old son, and his father all training together.

The video stars with Conor hitting a series of pads, then it moves to Conor Jr. hitting a mini punching bag of his own, dancing after he gives it a whack. And finally, Conor McGregor’s father, Tony, is shown getting some striking work in himself. Check out the video here:

Away from the Octagon, McGregor has been working to promote his new Proper 12 Irish Whiskey. He has expressed interest in rematching Khabib when he returns to the Octagon. However, if that isn’t an option, the Irishman is willing to face the next man in line first.

It remains to be seen how long McGregor will wait before returning to the cage, but as always, it will certainly be a grand affair.
