Chris Weidman Sets Sights On Eventual Light Heavyweight Title Run

Chris Weidman is looking to get more gold before he retires from the sport.

Chris Weidman sets sights on getting some more UFC gold before he walks away from the sport of MMA.

The former UFC middleweight champion went on record in a recent interview that he would like to make a run at the light heavyweight title. That’s a great goal to have but he will need to get past his next challenge before setting his sights too far out.

Weidman is slated to take on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in a key matchup in the middleweight division. This fight will serve as the co-headliner of the UFC 230 pay-per-view event. His short-term goal is to get a win in front of his home fans. But his long-term goal is to move up to light heavyweight.

“My goal right now is to win the middleweight championship back. Defend that a few times. Then head up to 205 and win some belts up there as well,” Weidman told UFC.com.

Weidman has gone 1-3 in his last four outings. Weidman has been out of action for more than a year now due to a thumb injury. He sustained the injury during his last fight against Kelvin Gastelum in July 2017. The former champ talked about his mental state leading up to his latest win.

“Going into that fight, I’m coming off three losses and it doesn’t look good when you’re in that situation,” Weidman said. “You have a lot of pressure on you. Especially to have it in your hometown in the main event. The pressure was on.”

Weidman knew what to do to get his hand raised once again in that last fight and did just that.

“But I knew what I was capable of. I just wanted to go out there, relax and move forward. Put pressure on and just fight. And that’s what I did.”

Daniel Cormier Responds To Derrick Lewis’ ‘Scared Of Jon Jones’ Comment

Daniel Cormier has reacted to the latest comments made by his next challenger.

Daniel Cormier responds to the latest comments made by Derrick Lewis just days before they meet inside of the Octagon.

DC will make his first UFC heavyweight title defense against the hard-hitting heavyweight. This bout will serve as the headliner of the UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

Lewis stated on Wednesday that he thinks the only reason he got this fight is out of fear. That fear is Cormier being scared to face Jon Jones a third time. Once Cormier responded, he made it known that Lewis is known for saying outlandish things. Also, the UFC never offered him a fight against Jones.

“I was never offered the fight against Jon Jones,” Daniel told reporters, including following his UFC 230 open workout (via MMA Junkie). “Nobody told me to fight Jon Jones. I think Derrick has said it, himself, openly that some of the things (he says) you take with a grain of salt, some of the things you believe what he’s saying. He’s just bull(expletive) on that one.”

Daniel Cormier Well Prepared

Despite all of this, it hasn’t got him off his focus and goal. He understands what Lewis brings to the table when fighting him under the bright lights.

“In learning about Derrick Lewis, it didn’t make me think, ‘This is going to be an easier fight,’” Cormier said. “It’s going to be tougher than the general public may believe. It made me understand him knocking out Alexander Volkov (at UFC 229) wasn’t the exception.”

Cormier is well aware of the challenge that he’s facing and knows what kind of difficulties he must overcome to be victorious.

“It was his expectation because he has fought from the very pits of hell, and he scraped his way back up to who he is today.”

The UFC champ is determined to prove to Lewis that there are levels to the MMA game he’s never even seen yet.

“I’m going to try to rip Derrick Lewis apart,” Cormier said. “There are levels to this fight game. I’ve said that before. I’ve competed at a level above most people for a long time.”

The official UFC website is no longer recognizing Daniel Cormier as the light heavyweight champion, he is, however, still listed as the heavyweight champ.

At one point the 205-pound division was the marquee destinations for primetime fights. Today, the division is in a much more stagnating state. That is fans don’t know who the champion is, albeit, Cormier is the man holding the gold. Cormier will defend his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis at this weekend’s UFC 230. As for the light heavyweight title, it looks like the UFC has already made plans to move on from “DC”.

Jon Jones will take on Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 for the light heavyweight title. It is said that once the first punch is thrown between Jones and Gus, Cormier will be officially stripped of the title.

Further solidifying the fact that “DC” will be stripped is that the UFC’s website no longer lists Cormier as the light heavyweight champ. That decision may seem rushed to some. Others believe if he doesn’t intend to defend the title then he should vacate.

Check it out here for yourself:

What do you think about the UFC removing Daniel Cormier as the light heavyweight champion on the website?

Did they do the right thing considering the situation? Or should they have waited til UFC 232?

In an absolutely brilliant marketing move, Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis will receive free Popeyes Chicken for life for defending the chicken chain.

Lewis himself admitted he may not be the most deserving contender for “DC’s” title. However, he has gone a staggering 9-1 in his last 10 fights in the UFC, in the heavyweight division none the less.

The proud Houstonian was already one of the more exciting fighters on the UFC’s roster. But after his come-from-behind knock out victory over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 Lewis’ popularity exploded.

Partly because of his performance during the fight and partly because of what Lewis would say to Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview- “My balls was hot,” the four words that changed the course of the heavyweight division.

UFC 230 won’t be the first time Cormier and Lewis have been in the same room as each other. Not long ago the two were involved in a backstage incident. Not of the violent type, you often hear about in MMA. This was much more light-hearted.

Lewis jokingly blasted “DC” for disrespecting the famous Southern Chicken chain. His defense of Popeyes looks as if it’s going to pay off for Lewis in a big way.

The Deal

“Adding another layer to the fast-food war brewing heading into the UFC 230, Derrick Lewis’ manager Malki Kawa tells me Popeyes Chicken took notice of [Derrick Lewis] defending its honor and have struck a deal with him heading into this weekend’s fight. Details to come,” Ariel Helwani Tweeted on Wednesday.

Lewis’ manager, Malki Kawa, further clarified his tweet. Saying that “The Black Beast” will be given free Popeyes’ chicken in the Houston area. He will also be featured on Popeyes menu boards, while Popeyes corporate offices are likely to sweeten the pot as well.

The Deal Explained

Lewis took to Instagram just about the same time this news broke. As always, he didn’t miss his chance to capitalize on a brilliant marketing opportunity. Lewis can be seen taking a huge bite of some tasty looking chicken all while sporting his new “My balls is hot’ shirts. You can buy one here.

As an extra bonus, a video of Lewis’s fried chicken fueled work out surfaced online today. Its a must watch.

Fried chicken and all, Lewis will have his chance to capture the heavyweight title of the world at UFC 230.
