This is a take you may not have expected to hear from Derrick Lewis.

The rapidly rising Lewis picked up what turned out to be the biggest win of his career at UFC 229 last Saturday. Facing a certain loss to previous No. 2 Alexander Volkov, Lewis stormed back with a jaw-dropping knockout in the final 10 seconds of the fight.

That win earned him a surprising title fight with champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of November 3’s UFC 230 from New York as a result. “The Black Beast” is a sizable underdog to double-champ Cormier. That’s hardly a surprise, however. More surprising was the simple fact that he got the bout considering Cormier was slated to fight Brock Lesnar in early 2019.

But UFC 230 needed a legitimate main event and it now has one. ‘The Black Beast’ is thankful for the opportunity. However, he’s still a bit surprised. Lewis recently told TMZ Sports (via MMA News) that he thought former champion Stipe Miocic deserved his shot:

“I don’t know why they don’t want to give it to Stipe. It’d been great for them to give it to Stipe than to me, but I appreciate them giving me the shot. I really believe that Stipe really deserves the shot, seeing as how he was the champion for a while, he defended that many times, and I guess dominant for a while.

“I don’t know why they gave it to me before they gave it to Stipe. Everyone else, whenever they lost their belt, they got a shot to win it back. I don’t know why they didn’t give it to Stipe, unless he wanted some time off.”

Miocic Is Mad

From his point of view, Miocic does not want any time off. He went off on Cormier on social media last night. The record-setting former champion, who was knocked out by Cormier in their first match at July’s UFC 226, said he would beat “DC” nine out of 10 times.

From a pure legitimacy standpoint, Miocic is undoubtedly the most deserving. He set the record for most consecutive title defenses in a division that is notoriously the toughest to do just that. But Miocic won’t get the coveted rematch. Cormier will only give him one if Lesnar can’t make it to their expected fight in 2019.

Even Lewis acknowledged that. Perhaps Miocic has a quicker path to a title fight if Lewis somehow shocks the world at UFC 230. Based on the odds, that shouldn’t happen. This is MMA, and anything can happen.

Do you agree with Lewis’ assessment of the messy situation?

Stipe: DC Knows I Beat Him ‘Nine Out Of 10 Times’

Stipe Miocic wasn’t happy to hear the news of Daniel Cormier’s next title defense.

Daniel Cormier & Stipe Miocic exchange some words on social media following the news about the new main event of UFC 230.

The UFC announced last night (Tues., October 9, 2018)  that Cormier would defend the UFC heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis at November’s pay-per-view event from New York City.

Upset Former Champion

Once the former heavyweight champ caught wind of this, he made it known during an interview with ESPN that wanted to fight Cormier at UFC 230. However, that fight wasn’t meant to be due to the fact “DC” would not accept it. Miocic took one step further when he sent out a video of him talking about the first bout with Cormier three months ago.

“I’m a way better fighter than he was,” Miocic said. “Nine out of 10 times, I win that fight. That was the one time. It kills me inside, because I’m a way better fighter than he is. I know it and everyone else knows it. I think he knows it, too.”

DC & Stipe Exchange Words

Cormier fired back at the comments made by Miocic by telling him, “don’t be thirsty.” He claimed Miocic is up next if Brock Lesnar wasn’t ready for their fight in January of 2019.

“Damn seems like I’ve knocked my guy @stipemiocic silly. Come on my guy don’t be thirsty! We’re still good. You got next if Brock doesn’t make it!”

Reality Of Situation

Miocic vowed that although Cormier won in July, “it would never happen again.” It should be noted that although Miocic is clearly someone who can get a title shot, he was finished by Cormier and hasn’t fought since.

The UFC would likely want him to fight again and get an impressive win before granting him a title shot.

“You beat me that night. I respect that. But it would never happen again. I carried the torch in this division for a long time. I’ve been staying up all night with my new born daughter and I still offered to fight you nov 3 with ZERO camp weeks ago.”

Daniel Cormier Opens As Huge Favorite Against Derrick Lewis Unlike Brock Lesnar Fight

Early betting odds have been released for this UFC 230 headliner and there’s been a wild swing compared to DC’s fight against Brock Lesnar.

Daniel Cormier opens as a huge favorite when it comes to his next UFC heavyweight title defense against Derrick Lewis. It was originally announced that DC would defend the title against former champion Brock Lesnar in January of 2019.

Changes

However, with the UFC needing a main event for the UFC 230 pay-per-view event, plans changed. The Las Vegas-based promotion revealed on Tuesday that Cormier would fight hard-hitting Derrick Lewis in the headliner of UFC 230.

‘DC’ was able to score a KO win over Stipe Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight title in the main event the UFC 226 pay-per-view event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the fight, there was an intense moment between Cormier and the former UFC heavyweight champion. This set up the fight that can go down as early as January. That fight is still there to do if Cormier can get passed Lewis.

Lewis Cleared

The Nevada State Athletic Commission originally gave Lewis a 30-day medical suspension for a “tough fight.” With that said, it would have not made Lewis eligible to return in time for this UFC 230 fight. However, the NSAC updated the document and it now shows Lewis with a 21-day suspension. Thus, he can fight.

Once Lesnar vs. Cormier was announced, the opening betting odds had at -200 for Cormier and +180 for Lesnar. A winning $100 bet on Cormier would net a profit of $50 while on the flip side, a winning $100 bet on Lesnar would garner a profit of $180.

Daniel Cormier Opens

Now, the betting odds for Cormier vs. Lewis has opened with Cormier listed as a 9-1 favorite. On the flip side, Lewis is listed as the underdog is in the +500 range and as high as +650.

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
