In the episode, former middleweight champion Anderson Silva is awestruck by a painted tribute to his superhero-like skills. Middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum gets his hair cut by some friendly locals. Light heavyweight “Smile’N” Sam Alvey tours the area with his wife and son, living up to his nickname even during a chance run-in with opponent Jimmy Crute. Rising star Israel Adesanya believes his co-main event fight with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva is the driving reason behind the quick sellout in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The 29-year-old unbeaten kickboxing champion turned professional MMA fighter oozes confidence and a swagger all of his own. His carefree attitude was on display earlier this week while speaking with ESPN.

“I’m just going to do me, and Whittaker, that’s his Christmas gift for the next five years; [it’s] me being on this card with Anderson that made the show sell out in 15 minutes,” Adesanya said.

“This show wouldn’t have sold out the way it did without me and Anderson, so he’s [Whittaker] welcome. He gets the pay-per-view points, he gets the accolades and what not. And yeah, good for him, he knows what’s up, even he knows it. So he can enjoy it for the next 10 years.”

While it is obviously impossible to determine how many tickets were sold in lieu of each fighter, there is no denying both Adesanya and middleweight champion Robert Whittaker were driving forces in the nearly 15,000 seat sell out.

As for “Stylebender’s” opponent, well, Adesanya doesn’t seem too concerned with the 43-year-old’s skillset. He continued to claim he knows Anderson better than he knows himself.

“I know him better than he knows himself,” he said. “My team’s been studying him as well and I’ve been studying him for years. So I just know; I feel I can mimic him; some of his fights I can actually mimic the sequences that he’s used to finish the guys off, or to get the guys started before he finishes them off.

“I just know too much, and the difference is the way that I’m playing the game: the mind. My mind is different, I’m Player 1.”

UFC 234 takes place Saturday, February 9, 2019, at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is extremely confident he’ll get the job done this weekend (Sat. February 9, 2019) against Kelvin Gastelum.

The Aussie is preparing for what would be his first official middleweight title defense. He fought Yoel Romero in a five-round main event last summer, which was not for the title after Romero missed weight. Now, he’ll face Gastelum, who earned his title opportunity with wins over Michael Bisping and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Whittaker previewed his match-up against the former Ultimate Fighter winner. “Bobby Knuckles” believes he’s simply “too strong” for the former welterweight competitor:

“I see myself hitting Kelvin until he falls. I’m just too strong for him, too fast; I hit too hard. I’m better in every single way …. and I’m really going to hurt the guy. Look it’s a fight so who knows? Anything can happen.

“But I can tell you I’m coming into this [Saturday] in the greatest form of my fighting career. And that’s a scary prospect for Kelvin. Because even on my worst day I’m an extremely dangerous fighter.

“Right now, my stand up game is at an highest. It’s become a real strength for me, I’m ready to go.”

UFC 234 will certainly have some middleweight bouts to keep your eye on. Especially in the co-main event, which could produce the next challenger for the title. Rising star Israel Adesanya will step into the Octagon against former middleweight king Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

Adesanya is undefeated in his MMA career, last knocking out Derek Brunson in the first round of their bout at Madison Square Garden in November. He’s looking for the biggest win of his career, in what he hopes to be a highlight-reel finish of one of the greatest middleweights of all time.

UFC 234 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia this Saturday night.
